Gluing together peg box frames
Просмотров 1837 месяцев назад
This is an experiment in 'silent lutherie' video. All it is is 15 minutes of me working in my lute making workshop, and that's it. I don't speak to the camera. I just glue together two peg box frames for two 5 course late medieval plectrum lutes. I want to get used to working in front of a camera, and I'm experimenting with camera placement in my workshop to do some more explicitly instructiona...
Holding the lute back for shaping and scraping
Просмотров 2487 месяцев назад
I found a way to use my mold-holding jig to hold the finished back of the lute so I may scrape the ribs and give the back a really good shape. I give a description of the jig on my blog, The Lute's Progress: thelutesprogress.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-return-of-betterizer.html. Have a look!

New 13 course lute audio sample

A short video of me making sounds with a 13 course baroque lute that I recently completed. Please keep in mind, I'm not a baroque lute player! But I wanted a record to show what a very new baroque lute from my workshop sounds like. The entire building process is detailed in 24 chapters on my blog, The Lute's Progress (thelutesprogress.blogspot.com).

    I wish I could make it but I've got a work trip during this time! What a bummer. I'm working on my first lute now with the hope of building a lot more. I wish there were more resources available but between David Van Edwards course, Lundberg's book, Clive's handful of videos and your blog I feel like I'm fairly ok. But there's still a lot to figure out on what works for me. I might shoot you an email because I'm about to build another mold and there's a few things you do that I think I want to incorporate which deviates from how David has his instructions. Good luck with the festival!

    Look like Arabic oud .. Nice Do you tray make oud ?

      Thanks! I have not made an Arabic oud, but I borrowed many ideas and building techniques from oud making for this lute. I think of it as a very early oud... with frets and gut strings.

    Thanks for this, Travis. Not for the first time I find myself wondering what an instrument-maker's life was like before the invention of adhesive tape!

      Paper or cloth soaked in hide glue? I don't know, but I think the scene might have been quite a bit messier.

    Thanks for sharing this! The way those bolts hold the work has me thinking now as I get further along building my first lute. Haven't got to the neck yet, but the bowl is off the mold at least. Thanks again.

    I have to revisit my cutting geometry. I have a scratch-built peg lathe but not as fast as that in the cutting.

    That is a GORGEOUS instrument! I have some wood picked out for a 7-course Renaissance lute I’d like to build, but I’m woefully under-equipped when it comes to tools. What recommendations would you have for a youngling who wants to get into lute building?

    Thank you for the videos. A comment and a couple of questions. Video quality is excellent. Sound is way too soft. It is difficult to hear. I would be happy to do some processing on it if you would like. It sounds like you wait two days between coats. Do you buff the varnish when it is dry? If so, how long between the final coat and buffing?

    • @traviscareylutes
      @traviscareylutes 3 года назад

      Thanks David. The sound is soft because I have not yet developed the stentorian voice needed to make workshop videos with my phone (I don't wear a mic, just use the sound the phone picks up.) Feel free to process if you like. I do wait two days between coats, and I try to wait at least a week between the final coat and buffing. Buffing is achieved by flattening the varnish with 0000 steel wool, then polishing with tripoli powder mixed with linseed oil on a soft cloth. I have not yet done that on this lute--I left the choice whether to buff or leave the finish glossy with the new owner. He's still deciding.
