That way, there would be space for toiletries/make-up that is separate from the main compartment. For horizontal storage style, there are plenty of duffel-style bags from many brands, including Aer.

Sounds like a tote back is the way to go. You can access everything from the top. "Tech" tote bag will have a pocket for your laptop too. I'm sure you can find one that does a good job!!!
