Draft horse on the beach! | GoPro horseback ride | Salinas River State Beach review

Fame and I canter on the beach for the first time - a total dream come true! This is his first "real" beach ride. For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area, I recommend checking this beach out! Horse friendly, no dogs allowed, port-o-potties but no horse troughs. Nice big lot, easy drive, easy in and out. Agree with all aspects you stated. I have had a Percheron mare I raised form a weanling and trained for trail riding and became my main trail horse these last 15+ years. She took me on many a 20+ mile trail ride with no issues, with great endurance and surefootedness, willing to blaze trails other horse balked at and helped me clean the cobwebs out of many a tree ;) She is now semi-retired and is mostly used for my husband who only rides occasionally and she keeps him safe without being lazy, pulling a small wagon or as a mount for my kids, who can all ride her at once, lol. Other things to consider that wasn't mentioned are: it's hard to find tack that fits, need big and wide trailers, farrier care is difficult to find and/or expensive, higher cost to feed and the amount of manure and urine they produce is way more than an average sized horse. I didn't originally plan to have her as my horse (she was supposed to be for my then husband), but it just worked out that way. Beforehand, I never had a horse over 14.2 because I am pretty short and while I love her, I would not get another draft horse again. Don't get me wrong, she's an awesome horse and she would probably walk through fire for me just because I asked, but it is a bit more difficult having a giant horse. But it can be worth it and she is.

Thank you so much for shereing ,it's a great lesson, from what I'm learning watching my favourite trainer it realy seems like you can almost get any horse and its mostly a matter of training and training methods and that most horses can be amazing once there is love respect and healthy boundaries in place for all the basics. I was looking at older horses but now considering very young ones and just training them well from the start to avoid a horse with existing habits.

I have had a standardbred for 22 years. He was six when I adopted him from off the track through a rescue and he's now 28 years old. I chose him because they're so steadfast. They're steady, they're wise And so kind .He's been my best friend. I can put Small children on his back and he carries them like they're a treasured package. I used to board him and whenever they needed a horse for a kid that didn't know how to ride they would borrow him because he stuck right with everybody else. I can't say enough wonderful things about the breed. He was my first horse. Got him when I was 40 and now I'm 62

I had a Standard Bred and we use to do Light Horse reenactments with him. Light Horse is WW1 Australian Army Light Infantry, my ex could fire a blank 303 riffle a foot above his head and he would just stand there. We would also do reenactments such as tent pegging, drills, and Anzac Day parades. It was fun! Unfortunately ' Jilliby ' is no longer with us! He would have been 30 this year. I found that they are very intelligent and great with kids!! Well oh boy was anyway!

What’s actually shocking about this is that you have to buy a trailer. I live in Poland and have my horse for 18 years now - it’s not necessary really to have your own trailer here. It’s so easy to rent one, even with an experienced driver.

    • @HappieronaHorse

Fame stands well for the farrier at this point. My farrier does charge more for drafts. I did spend the early years working on balance and teaching Fame to hold each foot independently with clicker training and that helped a lot. Good luck with your purchase!

We staked our horses out on picket lines just to clear flammable grasses in areas that weren’t fenced. They learned not to step on the rope. No one ever got tangled. We kept their water right at the edge so they could reach it but not knock it over. Car tires and truck tires are good anchors for water buckets.

I’m from The Netherlands, and went a couple of times to the event of Ring-steken, running at the ring, with Dutch draft horses. The kids ride on the horse without saddle. It’s very impressive to see, and hear, that horses run. In Dutch they are called Zeeuwse paarden, because they come from the province of Zeeland. (Where New Zealand is named after)

Most of my horses are Percheron crosses. I LOVE the big horse. My first draft cross was a Percheron/Tennessee Walker cross. She took me to Intermediate Cross Country Jumping. She was a willing mare & loved to jump. We traveled across the country. I had her for 30 years, she was born on my farm. She was my best friend. Other Percheron crosses, with Quarter horses & Thoroughbreds. Love them. All versatile & very mild disposition. I also rode Shires in the mountains of Wyoming. So enjoyable! I look forward to finding a pair of Gypsy Vanners & Drummers. Like you stated, drafts can do really anything. Mine did. And they enjoyed it...English, Western, jumping, dressage & trail riding is Always a favorite. All my draft crosses were always well behaved around children. And anyone. Also owned an Irish Draft Stallion.. 17.2 hands. Big black beautiful boy. ❤ You are fortunate to have such a gorgeous horse as Fame! Great video! You are spot on with your knowledge!
