Here's a detailed walk through of how I have my Pivot Trail429 set up for backcountry riding.
Hello nice person. I just bought my first fat tire bike and plan on getting rack and bags for camping on snow. I haven’t found any adventure races in the north east. Good luck !
The contents of the lg Patagonia bag with clothes? Where do all those things go? Backpack? You speak american with weather temps, why use kilometer in distance?
Good question, I will wear all of that, or delayer and put jackets in my panniers as needed. Only using Kilometers referring to the race's official title, but being American I use miles in thinking of the race and splits. Sorry for the confusion there.
Have you been able to test how the Coros Dura does in cold temps (below 0)? It looks like a great option for the ITI, but I wonder if you would need to keep it in a pocket.
I haven't yet because our winter has been so relatively warm. So far in rides in single digits it is totally fine. I should be able to take it out in proper cold before March and can circle back.
Kate, those tires, studded or not? Thanks. Good luck! 🚴🏼🚴🏼🚴🏼🫡
Thank you! The tires are normally lightly studded but I pulled them out for the race. The 45NRTH tool is great for doing your own studs.
I need a woman like this in my life
Well, since she has not found you yet, you must be hiding in the wrong location. Try the bicycle/hiking trails, they tend to be hunting in those locations.
Haha, I'll be here on RUclips.
Some great gear advice here. Thanks. I was going to do this event but had to change plans. I’m doing the Drift 100 in March so will be using some of your gear tips.
Awesome! Glad it can help a bit, I'd be happy to share any follow-up insights from how the set-up serves me. I have added a couple things based on the forecast - see my video description.
Nice selections and a great looking bike. Thanks for the video and take care, Al
Thank you!
Thinking I may have to try this because (also your size), my cockpit is so small that the feedbag bags are too annoying hitting my knees esp when having to climb (which is pretty much always). Thx!
Hi Kait are you sponsored by Pivot cycles? Or do you just really like them :) And wouldnt you be better off with black zip ties? I'd drop the white ones on the snow and they'd be invisible. As an Australian, I'd love to try fat biking on the snow, it looks like so much fun.
@@g_mack both 😊
@@kaitboyle Thanks Kait, legend.
Hi Katie, I did not know that you have a puppy, I simply thought that I would suggest such with that question. What breed is he/she and perhaps your dog would be a good screen guest. I enjoy your content.
@@ellerybice3787 no problem! it's good to get feedback on these! my most recent one is a little better 🤞🏼
I would love to hear how you handled storage of your bike box or what you did with that while you were riding Baja?
Where is your pup?
There is a really bad/funny story about this! He rolled in something terrible (barf/poo) in the middle of me recording and came up to me and rubbed against me. I had to stop, give him a bath, mop my floors, change my clothes and then re-resume! So technically he was in his kennel drying off.
great info but could barely hear you
Sorry about that. It was a tough day for recording (see story above)
Helpful video, do you have a link or name for the bigger pot?
It looks like they have changed over the years but it is very similar to this one: cascadedesigns.com/products/titan-kettle-1400ml
@kaitboyle thanks for the link!
All your videos I have watched are so great - direct, well thought out, no-nonsense, really helpful. Thanks so much!
Extremely helpful and informative. Thank you a lot!
Thank you!!
Good responsible info Kait! Again nice meeting between and hot sulfur springs station last year. Cheers
Nice job! Would you recommend a dropper seat post for the 350XL? Thanks!
love your channel, thanks Kait.
Thank you! Feel free to shoot me any topic requests.
Excellent video!
Superb video!
Sweet info! Met you hot sulfur springs colorado gas station after on road. Thanks for gear update.
Kait I love your videos! Thank you for going through so much detail every time. Would you be willing to make a video about what you put in your first aid kit? it looks really small and i'd like to make a similar compact one!
Thank you!! Yes, that's a great idea! I was just working on a list of topics so this is super helpful. Let me know if there are any other videos you want to see made!
Beast Mode!
What frame bag is that?
It's a custom Revelate Designs framebag!
No shelter is brave! Nice setup!!
My riding partner carried a tarp!
Would love to know what sleep kit you managed to get in a 6l dry bag. Guessing there was no tent in there; maybe a bivvy???
@@stevia13 a Western Mountaineering highlite, a Thermarest neoair, a sea to summit pillow, a montbell bivy!
Did you have a sleeping pad? Or just your bag and the sheet of Tyvek?
@@wayofthehike i had a thermarest neoair uberlite!
Hey, cool video. I've 2 questions: 1) were you cowboy camping (not tarp or bivy)? 2) even if merino, were riding with the same socks & underware for 4 days or you're carrying a spare set of those, too? Best, Fede
@@federicotheironlyportrait we carried a tarp but never set it up - we camped on ridges to avoid getting dew or frost. and i wore the same socks for 3 days of riding, and put my sacred socks on at night, the last day i rode in my sacred socks. such a great feeling! ☺️ underwear- i ride w/o chamois and swapped between ride pants/shorts during the day, and wore the underwear at night, which i did rinse halfway through. that combined with good backcountry hygiene when going to the bathroom and cleaning up post ride, it all works out!
Wow @@kaitboyle that's a crazy UL setup! I saw you're carrying wipes but not towel. Doesn't your merino get "crispy" after a couple days riding?
The deck on the Elkhorn if offset and can be rotated 180 degrees if you need a little more room between you and the rack. Thanks for trying it out!
It is! For the performance of the MTB it's a balance of having the rack/bag as close as possible/ahead of the rear hub but far enough away to not interfere with the travel or riding. I played with it set up in both directions and preferred the rack set up in the forward position with the front of the bag not mounted and more forward than the edge of the deck.
Thanks for taking us along Kait!
Will the rack accommodate panniers so you can haul the gear lower on the sides of your wheels? That way you don’t have to worry about a top pack getting in the way of your saddle. Just a thought😊
Yes, it does! I used Revelate Designs nano paniers on this exact rack on my ride to Unbound in May - it's an amazing way to carry gear on a gravel or road ride. However, because the weight is then to the side, it impacts the balance and handling of a MTB and more importantly, it's pretty challenging to hike-a-bike on hard terrain comfortably with panniers. For those reasons I wouldn't recommend panniers on singletrack.
What size front chainring are you using
28T! it's awesome for riding a loaded (or unloaded) bike in big mountain terrain
I tried carrying a spare battery on my COMMENCAL meta power on the rear rack and basically the rear weight makes the bike un rideable on serious single track. So maybe I could carry something that is feather weight to allow a safe ride. Maybe 1-2 lbs. maybe!
Yeah, it's tempting to really load it up but with the weight of the rack itself I found the lighter the bag, the less of an anchor it becomes!
Once you go rack ... you never go back.
hah! 😅
😆 Agreed, I have for nearly 3 years now and don't miss the seatpack one bit!
@@julianhawker7672 Adding a rack to my XC MTB in 2017 is why I no longer need a vehicle in 2024.
Kait, thanks for this video. Are you carrying any kind of shelter with this set up or is it a bit too tight for that?
Thanks! Between my friend and I we carried a tarp, but ended up sleeping out every night. I'm posting a full gear check video later this week explaining exactly what I/we brought and where everything went!
Great review - very well spoken!
thank you!!
great content, thanks!
thanks!
So you put your flaps in the gaps, got it.
Do you think it is possible to carry 10 lt? Planning to ride in Death Valley
definitely! how you do would depend on your setup. I would recommend a framebag, a 1-1.5 L nalgene on the down tube, a L on the fork, and ideally no more than 2 L on your back. you could also put some on a rear rack.
Thanks Kait, hey are your levers tilted differently for fit reasons or is that just a weird angle maybe? Asking because mine feel better asymmetrical but LBS say I'm crazy, not that I mind
I must be the camera angle! They are symmetrical. And I think whatever feels best is the best angle!
Very nice,…and well thought out. I really like seeing different setups. My wife and I also use mini panniers ( Rockgeist Microwave)…..and a Thermarest as a secondary …extra sleep pad for comfort.
Cutouts in seats don't work for everyone. Any pressure relieved down the centre inevitably increases pressure elsewhere. I was surprised you stated cutouts being good as a universal truth as opposed to a personal preference (despite other things being stated as personal preferences).
I said this is generally preferred by females, I can't state that as a truth for someone with different biology.
Great Vid!! I have recently removed the wet sponge from my shorts. So far so good. Working my mileage back up. Looking for 200 mile comfortable doubles. Ive also started using Tea Tree Oil to help my skin adapt. And OMG the savings on shorts :) Happy Riding!!!!!
I've been bike touring 9 months a year since 1982. (Work 3 months a year in summer to tour September to May) Tried chamois padded shorts once back in 1984. Don't like them. I ride in just running shorts and have for more than 300,000 miles.
👍. Almost 35 years without a chamois. Tried them didn't like them. I like air flow! As you say , it's all about the seat. ✌️🤘
Thanks for sharing. Subbed. + copied others … 😊
TY! Great video! After spending years riding with chamois and on multi-day rides, I have gotten tired of all the stuff you have to use in hopes of not getting saddle sores. A few years ago, I just started cycling in yoga pants and that felt great! As I get ready to do the Tour Divide in '25 ...I am looking for a better solution---thanks for the info! I will look at the Patagonia shorts and test them out. Thanks again!
It was very nice to see your cuteness so early in the morning Katie, take care.
Why would you want to.
