    I often hear people say "aperture is king" for planetary....I say that isn't true. Focal length is king for planetary. Most planetary captures are done at f/20 to f/30 intentionally, which is the opposite of fast. For deep space, yes, a fast aperature is incredible.

    Dude, do you not realize that you’re using an 8 inch which is considered a large aperture compared to a 3, 4 or 5 inch APO?

    • @AstrophotographyQuest
      @AstrophotographyQuest Месяц назад

      Yes, but I also used a 5” on the planets and got close to these results. Lower aperture doesn’t necessarily mean lower detail, it just means lower resolution and a smaller image generally. Seeing and other factors determine the sharpness and detail on the planets. But yes, I used to use a 5” Celestron 127SLT. I even remember using an 80mm refractor called the Orion st80, but the images were really small for my liking, so I used my 5” for a few years.

    It's not just the size of the telescope, but also the quality of the optics. This may not make sense for many telescopes, but is mainly for the Refractors, some of which are likely better than equally sized Cassegrain types, and Reflectors. However, refractors are some of the most expensive telescopes but at least they don't need collimating, at least not as much as the other types. In order to get magnification from a refractor equal to that of other telescope types, requires a lot more money. Interestingly, if you were to attach differently sized camera sensors to a telescope, if they have equivalent resolution, you can get more detail from the smaller sensor, because the native magnification of that sensor is greater. That's one reason why I prefer Micro 4/3 format of sensor to APS-C type of sensor, and larger formats for planetary imaging but also general terrestrial objects; the relatively small sensor is typically better for photos. If the sensor is small enough, you might not even need a Barlow lens!

    • @AstrophotographyQuest
      @AstrophotographyQuest Месяц назад

      Agree! For the C8, I have a ZWO ASI178MM (2.4 microns), which is almost at the correct sampling for my setup. Often for Solar Photography, I do use my refractor because it fills the frame pretty well and doesn't require collimation. But yes, they are much more expensive for the aperture!

  • @neccoboy
    @neccoboy Месяц назад

    It's not the size of the aperture that matters, it's how you use it! Had to do it

  • @lukasdeusch8468
    @lukasdeusch8468 Месяц назад

    8 inches is still big and expensive this is invalid

    • @AstrophotographyQuest
      @AstrophotographyQuest Месяц назад

      Yes but I also did Saturn and Jupiter with my 5 inch under good seeing and they turned out great. And most people getting into planetary say get an 11” which is called the “sweet spot” for a few reasons. Regardless, Astrophotography can be pretty expensive though so I agree. Also, they say 8” is the bare minimum for decent planetary resolution.

  • @bbroastro
    @bbroastro Месяц назад

    4:09 - This is King. Seeing > Aperture / Processing > Camera. Someone in Texas with an 8" SCT is probably always going to get better images than me in rainy UK with my 14" dob - simply because of the very local conditions we all battle. That said, I have an 8" SCT and a 14" dob, and the 14" dob *is* better under the same skies. However, you need *good* skies to get the best results from it if you want to push the magnification as high as you *can* go. Just a note, the extra light from a big aperture helps keep frame rates high and you don't *have* to crank your gain all the way up like you often do with SCTs, which means less noise reduction or aggressive processing required to get the same result.

    Aperture is not so necessary if what you are going to photograph is something relatively bright like a planet, I am talking about nearby or very large planets, it would not apply to Uranus or Neptune. I had not thought about the post-processing of images, this is a very good tip. The problem is that if you want to take a lot of photos, and for that you need the photos to not have too much exposure, then you will need a good aperture. I mean, with a planet you cannot take photos for several days, because the planet rotates and the images would be different, Jupiter rotates very quickly (it has a day of 9 hours) and that forces you to take photos with little exposure.

    • @AstrophotographyQuest
      @AstrophotographyQuest Месяц назад

      That is true, especially for Jupiter! You are limited on the time you have to still use all the frames that are good before the planet rotates too much. You can still use something like Winjupos but only so far.

    I think you got good image because of great seeing. The rest is delusion. Speed of camera definitely matters, but light gathering capabilities of your scope will define exposure time. Now, about collimation, it is impossible to perfectly get it for your scope, since mirror is shifting. Bottom line, seeing made that picture, but it could be well better if you get larger scope.
