Bride kidnapping is a very old culture among the Midwestern Igbo speaking people of Delta state, specifically among the Enuani people (Aniocha and Oshimili people). When a man loved a woman deeply he would watch her movements, then kidnap her, drag her to his house then the local gun shooter will fire gun shots of a certain number into the air. Once the villagers heard the number of gun shots, there will be shouts of koh koh or okokoko, and questions asked about who has been kidnapped? Once the gun shots have been fired, there is no going back only to pay the dowry and that's it. The men used to arrange with the gun shooter to quickly fire the shoots. This practice mostly happened on occasions when the man suspected the lady may refuse or has refused his advances. It was called Ikulu Nwayi which I am told means in their dislect means to pluck a woman.

Same reason why some women used to shy away from being the King's first wife in some African communities many years ago as it was rumoured and believed the first wives were buried alive with their husbands like I heard. Outrageous.

I have never really liked the Nwa boy programme. The duration of 10 to 15 years is too long. 2 years is okay in my opinion.
