I'm a fan of American Cars that are Unique and Unusual..the more unique and unusual the better!
The first car in my garage is 1988 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo . I have completed repairing and restoring it to as original condition as I can and now, sadly, will sell it as I don't have the room to store it anymore. It's a time capsule of 80's technology and style - complete with red leather interior.
I've also acquired two (2) 1990 Buick Reatta Convertibles.. the first one I bought in Georgia and drove home to California. The second one I found in Arizona when I was searching for Reatta Parts. I restored both of those cars and sold both this past spring to two Reatta Enthusiast caretakers, who appreciate the uniqueness of this car.
Recently, I needed a truck...and given my passion for things American, unique and unusual, I purchased a base Jeep Gladiator. What is a Gladiator? Its a truck, a convertible, a 4-wheeler, a 4 door, and a Jeep.. Unique and Unusual!!

That 3800 is a Trooper! <3!
I have had the '89 in white. What an amazing car. And GM's 3.8 is one of their best engines!
This and the New Generation jingle that followed are undoubtedly THE best advertising songs ever. RIP Oldsmobile.
this is what i want all those videos of boomers walking around an old car talking into their phone to look like
This must be a memory of this song for me, I remember hearing it back In 2018. If not, then 2019-2020.
These are such cool cars, I’d love to have an 88 or 89, the later ones just lost a couple features that made it special
Can I ask what kind of features your talking about, I'm getting a red 88 reatta very soon and am trying to learn everything I can
@@kaidrinksbleach Congrats!! It’s been a bit since I looked it up, but some things I remember were that the later years they took away all the fun quirks that made it special, like the crt touch screen and the buttons below it. They also changed the digital gauges I believe and added an air bag, taking away the sleek steering wheel. Surprisingly there’s a ton of content out there for it so I’m sure you’ll be able to find anything you’re looking for there or in a forum. I’m not an owner of one myself but I’d love to be someday. I hope you enjoy the car once you get it!
@@StickyMaros Yeah the 1988 and 1989 steering wheels pre airbag were so much nicer. The airbag steering wheels look fat and huge and don't fit the car when it was originally designed. The CRT was a kewl feature and as you mentioned they did away with that as well. Sadly if you want the convertible model you have to take a 1990 or 1991.
@@klwthe3rd my thoughts exactly! The original steering wheel suited the car so well, and the crt really made it unique. If I remember correctly a lot of the controls in the center got changed to be more normal and less interesting. I feel like they took away what really made the reatta interesting in the later years. The convertible is cool in its own right for those that want it, but imo it also changed the silhouette of the car. But hey, at least it still had pop up headlights lol.
@@StickyMaros They said that the customers didn't like those unique features so they changed it back to normal switches and buttons. They let the marketing department run the show with these customer focus groups when the car was selling relatively well. I do personally prefer the convertibles over the coupes but i love the 1988-1989 interiors better.
I wish these came with the supercharged 3800s.
They were just being discontinued when the supercharged 3800 was introduced in 1991 on the Buick Park Avenue Ultra. I'm not sure if the hood would close if that supercharger was installed hence why it wasn't made available on the last year of it's production.
@@klwthe3rd Yes, I'm aware of that fact, I'm just saying that it would have been cool if they had existed at the same time, I guess if the 3800SC was produced sooner. A hood bulge could have been cool.
@@justinkase1360 True. I love the 3800 SC too btw. They don't seem to have nearly as many issues as turbo charged models of other engines do. Great motor.
@@klwthe3rd I think it was a great motor. Imagine if they came out with a similar motor today, how much power it might have. Like you, I think superchargers make more sense on normal cars because they are more reliable, but turbo is fine on higher end sports cars. I have a soft spot for the 3800 SC because my uncle left an impression when he let me drive his 90s Riviera back in the day. I thought it was like a spaceship. I'm in the market for a Tesla Model S Plaid now, I hope to have that same feeling as an adult.
@@justinkase1360 Just like you, my family owned a 1993 Buick Regal Gran Sport and i always thought the 3800SC should have been an option. That car was amazing without the supercharger. If ANY Buick car should of had that engine, it should have been the Gran Sport in the 1990's. I'm on the hunt for a Buick Park Avenue Ultra with that 3800 SC motor. Wish me luck!
Ik im tardy to the party, the ses turning on then off usually means a problem occurred but it went away but codes will be stored
I also have a 1990 Buick Reatta . I live a few miles west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I've driven mine on several road trips. The longest trip was from S,C, to Mississippi. I stopped driving it much, to cut down on the miles I was putting on it ! Last year I messed up, big time, I took it to local garage because a brake caliper was not releasing due to sitting up so much. The guy replaced the wrong caliper, then told me the one giving me problems was due to a bad brake line. He replaced the brake line and I told him we were going to test drive it to make sure the old caliper, that was the reason I took it to the shop in the first place still hadn't been replaced. We drove it, and it didn't ride well. Normally if rides as good as my Lincoln ! The mechanic told me I needed tires, because the ones on the Reatta had dry rotted from not being driven. I told him , ok, no problem... he had a tire machine and he sold tires....I left my Reatta at his shop, I knew the guy well and I trusted him to get it done, even if it meant me paying for his mistakes. I hadn't planned on a sciatic nerve sending me to the emergency room, and having to take rehab for the next 6 months. I stayed with my older brother at the beach to be near the doctors and the hospital. 7 months later , I go home, go to get my Reatta, and the guy still didn't have my tires on, and my Reatta was in field of broken down vehicles ! I held it together, but told the guy, I was going to get my own tires. I ordered new tires, the mechanic put them on, and I brought my Reatta home, It was, and still is, a mess, because someone had left the passenger door open and rain had gotten inside my car! The results were ---water standing in the passenger floor board, mold on the carpet , the electric motors for the seat were shorted out, causing additional electrical issues. The ignition key would not release and the ignition would not turn completely off, All that cleared up today, on it's own, after months of drying out . The trunk still will not open, but I released I could open the hatch located in the rear of the car. I'm upset, but not as much as I was when I brought my Reatta home. My motor and transmission are perfect. The other things I can work on, and I love my car, so it only makes sense, I love working on it . I look forward to my next road trip !
Being a resident of MB i could have told you to never TRUST any mechanic around this area with a car like that. MB has way to many incompetent so called mechanics that will destroy your car well before it gets the repairs it needs. If you're looking for a shop that is atleast trust worthy, bring your car to the family run establishment Averill Auto off Seaboard street in downtown MB. They have been in business for over 20 years and all the locals know they are to be trusted. They are a Napa Car Care center as well to give you piece of mind while travelling. Hope it helps.
@@klwthe3rd thanks for the information .... I think I may have been there with a friend of mine that owned Quality Motors, at the time.
@@tommyhooks7767 Vic runs the front desk and the owners, two brothers, have been servicing customers vehicles for decades. They might not be the cheapest in town but you won't get screwed over. My family has been taking their cars there since 1998. Your Reatta will be in good hands there.
Loved the Oldsmobile complimentary tape that came in my moms 86 Olds, Cyndi Lauper Time After Time came on next.
Im thinking of getting one, would you recommend buying one?
i highly recommend you buy one of these cars. It's one of the very very very few convertibles with the venable GM 3800 motor. These engines last so long and require so little maintence so the car is a very low cost vehicle to run. When these Reattas were built they were assembled by hand on a special assembly line. The quality of construction was very high and nothing else looks like them on the road. Cosmetic parts are getting super rare so buy the best one you can get your hands on because restoring one is extremely expensive.
Looks like the dash lights is the problem
Where do u even find parts for this car I have the same car
You have not posted anything recent. Miss seeing your Olds.
Good video. Of course it was a great ride, as it was the premier car of the erra. Just wondering what was your recorded fuel economy. Mine over the road is usually 32 mpg. What did you get?
Love the Trofeo! Nice!!
If you want to sell it please let me know. I am interested in it. Gorgeous car
Thanks so much for showing this! Do you have links to your various products that you used like the polishes, and sandpaper, etc.?
The " mattel toy " version of the former Toro
Our musical standards have really dropped since the 80s. If Oldsmobile was still around, there'd be some autotuned bimbo singing on a mix that'd sound like garbage being dropped on a landfill. Because things like dubstep is cheaper to make and real orchestras would be "too expensive" or something.
Hangout driving 🚗 with cashiersue
Now do a remake on the Regal.
I have owned & driven Oldsmobiles since 1961....88s, 98s, 442s, Omegas, Cutlasses, F85s, a Toronado & now an Aurora. All great cars. When GM dropped Olds, it meant to me that GM had lost its mind!!!!!!
Love this song.. I remember my grandmother had an 85' or 86' Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera.. on top of that my Aunt currently lives in the town of Oldsmar, FL that was founded by R.E. Olds who bought the land in 1916... It's more than the luxury ride it's the feeling of pride that you feel insiiiidddee 😁
I miss Oldsmobile! Owned several and never had a problem. My Dad owned several Cadillacs and they were problematic it seems.
Nice! I just ordered a soft roll-up that looks identical, but the brand is Tyger. I spent $900 on a Bakflip trifold for my full-size truck. I am looking forward to having access to the entire bed on my Mojave.
Hey Paul. I am enjoying your videos on your Trofeo. I am digging mine out now, after years of storage, and trying to get it back on the road again. Mine is an 89, which I special ordered from GM new back in 88. Somehow I feel a special kindred spirit here! Of all the cars I have owned in my lifetime, and I'll be 74 in a few weeks, the Trofeo is the most loved. I don't think these cars get the appreciation they deserve, but I may have a slightly biased opinion. I am video recording my trek to getting mine going again, and at the end will upload to my little RUclips channel, so wish me luck! BTW, new sub here. 🙂
These were great cars nothing today rides that nice, they all ride like shit you feel every bump. I am not sure why you were so surprised that this car was great on a road trip. It was built to cruise not handle the race track. Who drives on a race track?
So fucking sad...gm doesn't give a shit bout their rep now...I mean chrysler is passing them...
Did you have the license plate border made saying “the great American road belongs to Buick?”
Super impressed with what you did! Any chance you could do it again or give me advice on mine? I have the same exact unit on a 1987 Riviera and the first time I tried to put a tape in it, it got stuck. Also would love to see your car if you still have it and you're in Southern California.
The best advice I could give you is to take your broken unit out, buy an old one on eBay. Spread out a BIG white sheet, take lots of pictures before you take either apart, and then just jump in..thats what I did. I did find that having a shot of bourbon handy for when it became very frustrating really helped.. so no, I would not want to do this again! Sadly, I sold the Trofeo and the Reattas this past year... but I am always on the lookout for a new project to undertake! Good Luck!
So I started to replace my 1988 Toronado with the speaker set you recommended on Ebay. I was not nearly as successful at bending the metal on the speaker holders as you were. Mine are a hot mess and mostly held up now by the speaker trunk covers. My next step is to do the door speakers that crackle the most. Unfortunately, in your video the door removal is sped up and from a distance so it is hard to tell the steps taken to remove the panel. I am very worried about scratching or damaging the door/parts. Any advice? N/M I see the comments below.
The rear speakers were a pain in the butt, but by carefully and slowly bending the wire hangers, I was able to get the wire to 'click' into position. The doors have a few screws to remove (behind the pull strap) and lots of plastic snaps that I carefully popped out, and then the whole panel lifts up. I remember I had to hold the panel and disconnect the wires for the lights in both the handle and back of the door handle. If you stereo still 'pops' after new speakers, it could be transistors in the old radio going out. I had that problem with a Buick Reatta I had, and sent it out to be repaired. The new transistors solved the noise and gave the stereo a clean sound. Good Luck!
Most electrical problems off all old cars are bad grounds! Even if they look good you should clean them up! And they are a lot in there’s GM cars of this era! I m professional mechanic and I (stil) own a lot of these type vehicles of the ‘80s,’90s and on! Start with the shop manual “ground” connections first! Just a tip! I always do that first! My Reatta had lot of problems with bad grounds and even totally corroded inside the electrical harness! Good luck with fixing it!!🍀
I never did trace all the ground wires. Sadly, I had to give up my Trofeo, but hopefully the new owner is successful in tracking down all the grounds. Thanks for the advice!
I had a '90 Trofeo silver with maroon interior and the touchscreen and I loved that car. It had classic lines and the taillights looked so cool at night.
I love the trofeos.. so unique and the styling has aged well. It still looks modern and people ask what type of car it is!
Well, here is cassette repair I asked about. LOL Guess I should've looked at all the videos before asking. I can't imagine I would ever get it back together if I attempted to take it apart. Mine visually is in good shape but won't open without pulling on it and the play button does nothing. It actually had a cassette in it. I didn't see how you took off the trim around the basket shifter but I want to do that to repair/replace the light. The shift options are not well lit so I think there may be a bulb out.
there is a small trim that pops off around the console, and it reveals screws to remove more parts. Just be careful popping the old plastic trim off. My player had a cassette stuck in it, but once I got the unit out, I was able to use small screwdrivers to take parts out and replace them with parts from the one I bought online. Just take lots of pictures so you know how everything goes back together!
That's better. Good job. Would have been cool to use a tape camera too
Yes, this is my classic take on the commercial.. with an age-appropriate logo!
The crappy new logo at the end and in the thumbnail sucks and makes no sense to put in there
I was trying to do a 'how would Buick advertise the Reatta today' commercial!
Thank you for making this video and putting it on the internet for me to enjoy. I love the Reatta and there isn't much content out there.
You are welcome. There is quite the fan base for Reattas!
My neighbor used to have a Dark Teal Blue Metallic 1986 Custom Cruiser back in the day & I used to LOVE listening to this song on the demonstration tape that came with it!!!!!
Its truly an ear worm..once you hear it, you can't un-hear it!
i fall more in love with this car every time i see it
Thanks! It is a classic design!
Hi! I saw a reatta that I was interested in buying recently and the owner told about how the check engine light was also flashing sometimes so I wanted to know what website or program you used to identify the codes you saw.
I went to ReattaOwner.com. Its a great source of Reatta info!
@@paulzgarage5675 thank you!
Loved, loved, loved my Reatta...1990 white hard top. drove the wheels of that car...people stopped to look everywhere I went. 3.8 Buick indestructible...320,000 miles some idiot hit it. Great car from a time when Buick was building real cars.
The 3800 is unbreakable! I think Reatta's aged well, and people still wonder what they are when they see them!
I contacted you a little bit ago. What are your next updates planned?
Hi Walter - The Trofeo is in storage.. I will be getting it out in November and have it listed for sale. Unfortunately I have run out of room for storing cars!
Always liked this car when it came out. Nice to see one again😎
It's such a clean design that has held up well. It still gets looks on the road!
I have a 92 Toro, wondering if the process is the same. Could you go more in depth on how you took off the door panel too?
You have to remove the door pulls, and there is a screw behind the handle, and I also remember using the plastic panel tools to unsnap all the snaps along the lower and side edge of the door.. then the door panel lifted up. I think there is a diagram in the service manual that I referenced (going off memory here!)
Hi you did a very nice job. You have a lots of patience I have a 1990 olds Trofeo and I wondered if you could help me where you ordered the headliner material from plus how did you get the sunroof liner off. I live in Canada and there are a very few of these cars around. Thanks & kind regards KIB
Hi There! I found the material on StockInteriors.com I don't know what color you are looking for, but I had ordered Garnett Red (what I thought was a stock GM color) and it wasn't a perfect match. I had them send samples and was able to find one that matched. I had found a video about how to remove the headliner.. you have to basically remove all the trim around the headliner, and the cardboard headliner itself is velcroed to the ceiling. Mine was dried out and would have easily ripped part.. so be very careful removing it. Also, it crumbles as you remove it and makes a mess in your car! Good luck and email me if you have any other questions!!!
@@paulzgarage5675 Thanks very much for your help I appreciate it very much. One last question … How many yards of the material did you order. If u you remember. By the way my car is all Black inside and out. Thank you again for your kind help Best Regards KIB
I purchased 3 yards and one can of spray adhesive and had plenty of both. My only comment is once you spray the adhesive, wait till it dries a bit and is just tacky before rolling the headliner out. I had a couple areas that were kind of 'wet' and the headliner kind of absorbed the adhesive and looked a little matted. GOOD LUCK!
Nice video man.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
That white arc you pulled out of the pan... have you had any issues? I found one on mine... it's something to do with a thrust bearing in the trans.
I wasn't sure what it was.. I just pulled it out and threw it away.. what part of the Thrust bearing was it?
I love how this song now has a special feel. Makes it even better than it would've been hearing it back in the day.
In the 80's, each of the GM Divisions had catchy jingles.. I think Oldsmobiles was the best!
@@paulzgarage5675 I've admittingly never really heard the others, but I don't see them being better than this one!
