06 Forester - Transmission Fluid & Filter Change
Sir. 2009 subaroo impreza. Randomly car will die at low idle. Sometimes it will start after 20 min... sometimes couple hours. Sometimes will not start for a day or 2. During crank... but no start .. it has no spark. Then randomly... when it. Feels like it ... spark happens ... car starts... No codes... looks perfectly fine. Any thoughts??
For what reason did you not show the filter at all? There is absolutely NO WAY you didn’t record the most IMPORTANT part of this video (removing the oil pan). On top of that, you didnt even show us the inside of the transmission. As a mechanic of 8 years I’d highly recommend using the OEM gasket as opposed to making your own. Will save you time and you don’t have to go back to re-torque the nuts after 30 min or whatever that meant…. Im really not trying to be a hater but as someone who just purchased this vehicle and just wanted to know what this simple tranny service entailed; i have found myself being taken through a rigamarole of that mid-western jibber jabber 😅
These pans come from the factory sealed with RTV same as the oil pan and many import vehicles do the same thing. Gaskets can have a tendency to shift or get torn and RTV is more reliable to use as it will seal better in the long term. Old GM trucks used cork gaskets and if they were not changed often they would seep and make more of a mess. Gaskets have come a long ways especially with the rubber ones and generally don't cause much of an issue, but when a manufacturer suggests to use RTV then I will. Regarding the filter there was lost footage and unfortunately its not known until editing time but since its just a normal screw on filter I would figure that if you are tackling doing this job you would be familiar with screw on filter types and just know how to remove and replace.
@ no problem man you’re the goat sometimes us new york folk get up tight

A disclaimer of (i have no freaking idea and won't figure it out) would've been nice as im sitting here trying to fix my car.
If you are referring to the outcome of my video, read the pinned comment you will see the answer and an explanation.
Please stop touching yourself......
Do you not like a man stroking his beard on camera?
So re wiring isn’t that hard for 3rd gens ? I’ve lost all power to the car ever since the alternator start smoking and seized up. I couldn’t find the problem so end up sending it to a shop. Wondering what’s the outcome going to be.
It will depend on the wiring situation. If its the basic wiring like I have then no its usually really easy to figure and can be something as simple as a fusible link. If you have a more complex setup like the TPIs then it can be a bit more difficult. But these old 80s vehicles were never hard to figure out wiring wise.
Appreciate the shout out! Hope all those parts worked out for you!
Ended up only needing the tank and sensor for my needs. I used a plug on the sensor hole but it weeps enough to be a nuisance so I am replacing it with the actual sensor.
Great video, definitely going to do something like this. My problem with the large top chests is that I don’t like the super long drawers. I saw Husky’s 52” top chest (H52CH8MOD). The top of it is deep with integrated power strips. Granted, it’s $450 and your two 26” boxes are only about $300.
The super long draw fits 4 racks of my primary used wrenches; 2 ratcheting and 2 non-ratcheting. So I don't mind it for that but if I didn't have those it would definitely be an ackward drawer to have.
Damn that’s frustrating. Dealing with the same thing on my 05 Outback xt. Only the driver side fan stays on
Yah definitely many areas that can cause fan issues if its not just the fan itself.
Could add a 2x4 frame open at the front then put upper boxes on that. Now you have a small space under the boxes and when there is something on the surface of the main box, the upper drawers can open. This will raise things about 3+ inches, but that shouldn't have too much impact.
Well not sure about 2x4s but you have given me an idea of a way to increase storage again. The drawers don't open because those top boxes have some form of a locking mechanism that when the lid is closed all the drawers are locked so I just need to modify that.
Everything is removable if you try hard enough
lol yup. Just I prefer to remove stuff and not ruin it if possible.
eygptians 3,000 years ago used miles, feet and inches, their wasnt kilo metic system made up then.
I connected up an 8KW DC generator to my 1973 400 cu in V-8 and use it during power failures to power my home. I found some fets that would allow me to create a-c current and mounted them in a box inside the car to prevent corrosion. I simply removed the passenger seat (I've been divorced for over 10 years and no longer needed it) and mounted the converter I built where the seat had been, using the same mounting brackets. I turn on the headlights and shine them into my home when using this set up. It helps light the living room and gives me an indicator when I run out of gas or have an issue with operation. My neighbors complained a few times when i used it due to the noise the 400 cu in engine makes, until I let them plug in their fridges during outages.
Did this on my Ram 1500- found a Durango 140 amp alternator- straight bolt on., replacing the 105A oem
Interesting other vehicles are compatible like this too.
thanks my friend from puerto rico
You are welcome!
How many litters did it take to get full at the end
Outstanding job 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
You should cover the opening where the carb goes! You drop something down there you will have a problem
Lord Jesus, I never want another computer car. Please cause me to only have and use solid state vehicles. i dont even care if I find whats wrong with the modern vehicles. Theyre garbage and were designed to cause problems because corporation people are children of Satan. Amen to Solid State vehicles. i would like to progress to high efficiency steam at some point in the next 3 years.
You don't mention year of truck or vintage of PCM module
The quickest way to test if the fans are working is to connect the green self diagnostic connectors under the driver side dash.
thanx for the info ..i wish you showed the switching on and off of the obd conn. also the plug thing other than those tiny things lol you hit it on the head about people not showing the actual making of things not just ok ill build it ,,then bring you back ,,?????? what in the???lol thanks again man great job......
The switch I put in place just acts similar to using your key in the ignition. Depending on the software you use they will generally ask you to cycle the power or something and that is all the switch does.
Happy to see it’s been done before! I use to own a cavalier. (Sold it a year ago) Got a cheap 1988 firebird and the seats are destroyed. Realized how similar they looked to my old cavalier seats and thought hmm wonder if it’s been done before. Thanks a ton
Yah a lot of chev/gm vehicles from that era shared the same bolt pattern.
Is that just the base x model?
For my light the person who fix it broke it than glued it back in place. This helped to explain why it happened. Thanks again.
Thanks for vid can you do one one on taking the whole windscreen wiper off the car, fixing the water hose, pump and sprayer and changing the rubber seals inside and outside the car door for this brand?
If I missed the gotcha bolt dowels @ the 8:25 mark in the video, is it a mistake worth tearing back apart to remedy?
Did you get it fix? If so what was the fix? Mine is doing the same.
Mine is making knocking sound in hot conditions, could it be bad pump
What bulb does it use and how many?
how much handling affects by increse in gc i want to do it for my new re shotgun 650 and do want 1 inch of more gc will it destabilize say riding on at 100-120kmph
Anytime you alter the suspension on a bike you run the risk of changing its handling. How much is to be determined by what you do and the only person who can notice will be you. This bike in particular had its suspension altered and before I put the OE shocks on you could not turn right very sharp without dragging pipes. Burly shocks are IMHO junk and serve zero purpose on a bike.
@@toolshedadventures thanks 👍👍👍
That power supply is garbage! Spend a little bit of money and buy a legitimate bench power supply! Also that wall adapter would shut itself down before it ever popped that one amp fuse the fuses rated for 1 amp you could easily put two plus amps into it before it would even think about popping and that wall adapter can't output that much current so the fuse is useless
All your testing shows that the main fan was working THE WHOLE TIME If you let the car come up to temp or just turned on the AC switch, you would have seen that only the sub fan was inoperable and this would have greatly reduced your diag time! I'm glad you got there eventually but if anyone is watching this video for help with this issue please do not follow this process! Confirm the relays are good. Jump the load side pins on the fuse box and if both fans run, IT MUST be a control side issue. Test the pos side of the control circuit by KOEO ground the ctrl side pins with a test light ($3 at HFT). If you get a light on 1 ctrl pin on each socket, you KNOW the pos side is good! Run the engine, turn ac on and check continuity between neg battery post and the grd pin on the ctrl side. If you get NO continuity on that pin, you've narrowed your diag down to ONE arm of the circuit in 20 min or less! No trip to the junk yard, no ect swaps, no fuse testing needed Final tip: USUALLY for cars this old, you can get a pdf factory service manual online for 25 bucks or less!
First you assume the AC in the car was working... it was not. Second you assume it was a temperature in which it wouldn't take long for the car to warm up to temp.. it was not. I then also pointed out in the video through very simplistic means of how to check fans and said they both worked as did the relays and this point it was a control side issue of no power getting somewhere. The rest of the video is going through how I troubleshooted that and why I had to do what I did and in the end is was a break in the wire in the main harness running up the driver fender. I was only able to determine this from doing continuity tests from inside the car to the fuse box and locating the fault. Your methods and my methods will be different in figuring out something, but it does not mean either is right or wrong. Figuring out the problem and finding a solution is the end goal.
Power steering pump O-ring for a 2005 Forester: Part number: 34439AE021
If oil is leaking out it also means air is getting in. If air gets in it will foam and expand and overflow out of the reservoir.
ATF fluid around the reservoir suggest an overflow. The overflow is usually caused by expansion of air bubbles entrained within the oil itself. The oil doesn’t expand; the air in it does. This creates foamy oil, causing it to boil over. Air gets in to the system through leaks. Most leaks are from worn/crushed/failed O-rings, locates either at the pump, or at the rack. The oil leaks out, and air gets in. Make sure you replace the O-rings with the EXACT size. Oversized O-rings, even by hundredths of an inch, will not fit, risking a cracked hose-to pump fitting when tightening down the bolt.
If I was going to make that jumper ..I can use the plug from the junkyard and just twist the wires together?.. I'm assuming there's only two?. I started taking my Subaru to a shop in Spokane, Washington and these places started selling me and ripping me off. I actually bought an air conditioning pump when I didn't need one. I was told my s*** was leaking and I remember having my car for 3 years and I never had to add freon. I was lied to . Now my ac is worse in the summer.. I needed the condenser . Now my fans stopped working.. And my alternator bearings are going out.. They keep squealing really loud when a load goes on the alternator
The relay
You could be an automotive instructor great info thanx
Appreciate the feedback 👍
What year is the SX4?
2008
what kind of pump??????
Not sure if the pump has a specific name, but if you watch my last video you will see the pump in question.
Cool trick. I know there used to be a bracket that, in combination with the factory "tripod" bracket (that bolts between the pulley and the pump), provided the slider slot for the outboard adjustment bolt. It only bolted to the head and reached behind and across the pump, dropped down and had a slot in it for that adjustment bolt to slide in. Didn't use ANY of the studs on the back of the pump and didn't have any connection to the front-most exhaust bolt. Of course, I didn't buy it for $30 back in the day because I was cheap and opted for hacked-up factory brackets, which are still on my car.
Yah picked up some brackets off Amazon but they are total junk but will as templates to make my own.
Check out elevator bolts.
Messiest shop on YT. At least pick up the pan full of used oil before you step in it. SHEESH!
Oil pan is for all the 10mm sockets that go missing and easy to find and keep clean.
Great information.
100 kilometers a day? That's like 60 miles. I drive 215 miles a day to and from work. I do an oil change every month on my 08 Forester.
I really like that kit! I’ve never bought a connector with loose terminals in it before, I usually have to join wires and stuff. That’s awesome
Yeah its not always easy for me to get to a junkyard or find parts readily made or available so I have to make stuff.
That's an upfitter connection point.
Yah it was a nice little find
I'm looking for a PCM pinout/wiring diagram for a 2004 Cadillac Escalade in order to make a bench harness and programming. Do you have any insight if your GM truck might be a similar setup as the Cadillac since they are both considered trucks? Thanks
The PCM should be a P59 but confirm looking at the sticker on it before doing any work.
@@toolshedadventures @everyone yes it is a p59. The sticker has hardware number 12583660 . I just want to confirm that the wiring doesn't fry my PCM if 12v is applied to the wrong pins on the PCM. I did a search with the hardware number 12583660 and it comes up with that PCM was used in 2004-2007 Chevy Silverado. Mine came out of a Cadillac as I had mentioned.
good job
