Retro bikes, outdoor adventures
HAMMERING priceless retro MTBs off-road. Will they survive?
Out of the archives and onto the trails, this is it: the long-awaited latest gathering of some of our most special, rare, unique and valuable mountain bike collections.
As well as riding and judging, there's also plenty of peril. Some of these things are downright dangerous. Will all bikes and riders survive intact?

Stay tuned for the big event in the next video. Expect silly challenges, and some stringent scrutineering as we judge each other's priceless vintage builds.
Have I found the first ever premium hybrid? 1992 restoration and rebuild
Просмотров 9 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Could this be the world's first premium hybrid? I'm saying yes. Of course there were bikes in a similar style in earlier years, but they were marketed as "city bikes" or "trekking bikes". The hybrid craze started here, and this is arguably the earliest example of a higher spec model specifically marketed as a hybrid. Found for pennies on Facebook marketplace, and given a strip down and rebuild ...

Ultra rare pro-spec MTB from 1991: Team Marin total rebuild
Просмотров 9 тыс.7 месяцев назад
The only Team Marin I've ever seen from this model year and in this spec. A true unicorn, especially with the incredible Zolatone paintwork still in this condition. A total nut-and-bolt rebuild, will the bike live up to the promise of its elite-level parts? And are some of my decisions a crime against the engineers of Marin?

1st generation Shimano SPD complete overhaul and history
Great job on that shifter. I'm on the second indexed shifter on my 1989 Marin Bear Valley which has the full Mountain LX monty. I was lucky to pick one up off eBay (I was going to win that auction whatever the price!). If it happens again I know what to do now. The rest of the groupset has been rock solid.
Same phosphorescent yellow colour as yours in my later 90s Marin Eldridge Grade...whole frame is that colour with sick red blood spattering drops overlay...
Thanks for the video. I have a 1993 Scott Extralite and the exact same derailleurs and all Shimano Dior DX parts. I want to change the cable but couldn't find the information.
No offense, but every bike is so small for its current rider that none can be taken remotely serious. All are mediocre bikes to begin with, but the seat post is a giveaway that whoever purchased those bikes did so without knowing the importance of fit.
Currently have 3 muddy fox bikes.. Adventurer 90, Alu pro 92, Alu Team 92. Love them.. Will never let them go.
You pretty much just showed theives where to go.
best channel on yt :))
liked and sub'd .. this decided it for me.. Lots of reviews about this tent. BUT yours is the only one in the real rain . yu say its sealed.. You show its sealed .. Jobs a goodun :)🤓🎬📽
Have a Kona Sutra with redshift suspension. It is not the comfiest way to get from A to B, my recumbent Touring trike with full suspension is. The trike is better for touring as no sores, numb hands or aches, can climb any hill as slow as you like and handling not effected by wind or luggage.
In 2025 I am now 45 years old and “back” own my 1992 Marin Eldridge Grade in Black/Signal Red. This bike is my Teenage Pride. My Original was stolen just a few weeks after purchase. My expensive padlock was cut and the bike was gone forever. About 5-6 years ago I found myself still again complaining about the “love I had lost”... and so i went searching. I repeated my search and finally found one on eBay. I couldn't believe my Eyes. I had found the exact same bike. Yes, I checked the frame numbers, but I had several pieces of evidence that proved it wasn't mine, because the seller had all the Paperwork complete, 1st Owner, "completely original" and a Sticker on the Seatstay from a long gone bike shop where he bought it himself in 1992 in that City. The LX pedals even had the original but annoying slip-on baskets. The brake cables were still the 2.0mm Version. The front tire was also still the “long dry rotted” Rockstar Sierra 26x2.1. A cheap black Schwalbe Tire at the back and even that tire was already worn down. The downside was that it was 200 km away from my city. Beggars can't be choosers, so I placed a bid and won it for about $50. I took my car and headed to pick it up. Since then I've just renovated/revived everything and replaced both tires with period-correct Panaracer Smoke/Darts with skinwall. Since then I have felt whole again. Since the day my bike was stolen, it has truly torn a hole in my soul.
I love hearing tales like this. The emotional connection to these bikes is so strong.
It’s a Stumpjumper, not a Stuntjumper.
It's a Stumpjumper frame, but the owner has resto-modded it for his own amusement, hence turning it into a "Stuntjumper".
This is a great video. Your US viewers need the diversion. Can we please have a new one soon?
Thanks, yes it has been a while. Now it's not quite so freezing out, it's about time I took on another project...
That Dyna tech Pro my goodness she’s beautiful

@ very cool
lol that farmer is an angel
yup comfy cruising cant bear a good 80s 531st
I don’t see a reason for me to personally upgrade from DX to XT shifters, since they work just fine.
I do have several pairs of DX that work fine, but I can definitely feel the difference. XT seem to feel just that little bit more precise. The stiffness of the alloy mount versus the steel is perceptible.
the lugs are bonded and so is the frame, ive a 93 ogre xce, rear triangle is dyna drive, titanium along with the seat post. the sister bike the mtrax 500/600 had the steel rear triangle, wihle the 700 was also full ti
3rd time I’ve watched this 😂 ❤
I was the manager of the Fat City machining and tacking department when that yo eddy was made. Steel is real fellas….. those Can o ales were awful to ride for distances beyond your mailbox😂
might just be the funniest bike channel on yt P.S nice car
Meanwhile i've such a Team Marin in my collection too. We bought 2 Marins in 1991 in a bike shop in Munich/ Germany for two girls in our mountain bike group. One of this "girls" has it recently given as a gift in my hands
I've got a mk1 Raleigh mirage with a 501 frame and at the time, Raleigh was fitting qr hubs on the front and bolt on rear and sometimes even miss matched rims out of the factory, just to use up old stock.
since halfords stopped doing colour matching, for tiny touch ups, i found boots and there massive nail varnish range, very handy, then a quick squirt of clear coat.
it looks like the same crank arms, on the Shimano 600 Ultegra,
I have a realy vintage one, a Meister vrom the 1950s 🙂
Socks & Sandles- Noooo!
I bet your wife/ partner loves it when you put you lod bike bits in the kitchen sink!!!😂
If its lockdown as you say, where is your mask ????
The Hewitt has longer chain stays, this gives you more heel clearance when you mount rear panniers.
Nice 🇲🇦👍
I like Peugeot mtb
bikes are too small for you. I'm sure you know.
lovely bikes! what size is the Kona Explosif please?
Good work, well worth it. Switching from flats to SPDs in my late teens transformed my mountain biking. So much more efficient uphill, surprisingly helpful downhill. I've got 3 sets now, including the red cage DX version popular with downhillers back in the day. The original pair I bought around 2003 are still going strong!
I've always been an SPD lover. I think those red DX ones are about the only model I've never owned! They look so cool but were a bit too much on the gnarly side for the kind of lightweight XC riding I was doing at the time.
That's a hell of an effort.
I just recognised that Soul 2 Soul music clip as one from my old CD collection. Funkmaster Flex… wonder what he’s riding now. He missed a trick not releasing an MTB stem before Girvin!
I wish I could put soundtracks on more of my videos but the copyright situation means it's just not worth it! I loved matching the tracks to the year of each bike.
Any updates on the S-Works Prestige? Did you get around to repaint the fork? Would love a follow up 😊
I'm afraid it still looks exactly as it did in this video, except the addition of a layer of dust and spiders' webs. I plan at some point to take the cranks and fork to a metal refinisher and get them sorted out, then replace the decals and it'll look acceptable. Problem is, it will always be ridiculously too small for me so the only ultimate solution will be a bigger frame. Let's see what happens.
@@red_dreadUnfortunate that it’s the wrong size. It looks really sweat though!
I thought it might have been a Raleigh Bomber i had one way too big for me and heavy but i loved it
Similar colours for sure. But the Bomber was ever so slightly before my time. That was the bike the bigger kids in my first school might have had, back when my legs were still far too short.
11.09kgs = 24.449lbs. Whilst I like the fuchsia, I’d take the purple Ti anytime. Re the Mint Sauce stickers, I still have a load, that like the calendars, are priceless. I’m surprised you didn’t put Coleman Cow on, as his alter ego is Fx5: (the) Fantastic Fabulous Formidable Fuchsia Friesian.
Neither is absurdly heavy, in fact arguably the ti one is impressively light. That one is definitely my favourite too. I do indeed remember Coleman and did once have an Fx5 sticker on one of my childhood bikes.
You're quite welcome. I'm one hundred percent dialed in every time you speak. Thanks again for choosing to share that fountain of knowledge of yours with the rest of us.
Tongue in cheek? Nah, all cheek!!
No blokes impaled by shoddy old MTB forks! Why did I watch this video?
Keep watching and sooner or later it'll happen
Such cool bikes and fun tour!!
Original rim is Specialized Z21 Pro S-Work version (machined side wall)
This bike was speced with full XT components in Canada. I bought one new back in 1994 for about $1,600. I still have the rigid fork. The bike has been converted to a drop bar gravel bike but I still have the original parts.
I always wondered why they specced S-Works level bikes with XT when XTR existed! It was the same with my 1991 S-Works M4 - weird that it was the lightest, most World-Cup-winningest superbike you could buy, but they skimped on parts. Would love to see the rigid fork that came on yours.
Incredible collection. Really slightly envious. More, I honestly wish I could visit and see them in-person. You seem like such a fun dude to hang out with. Fun fashion sense both in clothing and in bikes. If I wasn't afraid of how much it would cost me (both the parts and your efforts), I'd almost ask if you had any time to help someone state-side find something similarly fun. In the meantime, I'll try loving my 85 Elkhorn as best I can. Just started a new job, and looking forward to my first paycheck in <2 weeks. I'm still trying to determine what toys to buy in what order (I'm thinking of getting at least a proper heart rate monitor to help me manage my newly-found fitness, as well as maybe a full bike fit, and some cycling shoes), but I'm very much looking forward to giving the Elkhorn some modern rubber.
Thanks for the kind words. My workshop remains a top secret location so there are never any visitors! Other cartel members are similarly secretive regarding where they keep their stashes. Says something about the crime rates in the UK... I do love helping people find retro rides of their own, but there's no science to it to be honest, I just idly scroll eBay and Facebook and occasionally find gems. I also love the Retrobike.co.uk community. As for what to spend your money on, I endorse the idea of getting an HRM. I take a Garmin or similar on every ride, just for the satisfaction of seeing my KMs and fitness go up and up. As a collector, you'd be right in assuming I have examples of each (Polar, Suunto, Garmin, Withings and others) and it's the Garmin Fenix watches I recommend to everyone.
@red_dread totally understandable! And fwiw, I'm sorry that any of you have to be concerned as such! But also of course you've all your own rights to privacy regardless. As always, thank you for sharing your exploits here for our vicarious entertainment!
@@red_dread Perhaps a more practical way I could request help from you. Would you have any suggestions for what models of bikes I might look out for that have Suntour's mid-to-top of the line components in their last years? Mountain or road bikes, 80s onwards til their demise. Not to sleight Shimano here as they also seemed to be doing very cool things in that era, but I'm finding myself wanting something from the sort of underappreciated competitor... not quite 'underdog' from what I understand, as Suntour was the longtime incumbent in Japanese cycling? But nonetheless, a much smaller company as they didn't have other industries to draw revenue from as Shimano did. (I likewise have similar interest in Minolta film cameras, fwiw! Just seems like these companies had technically superior products, but didn't have the marketing and financial means to stay afloat.)
Meanwhile, I'm thinking of trying to source a full Suntour XC groupset to swap on to my 85 Raleigh Elkhorn. A sort of "what could have been" upgrade, as they were both released in 85, though months apart.
The Suntour v Shimano story does fascinate me. It is indeed the case that the former's products were great but they were outmanoeuvred by superior marketing and general business acumen. As for finding a bike with Suntour on it, I have no particular special methods - I just grab whatever comes up on eBay or Facebook search at any given time! I relatively seldom find bikes with full Suntour groupsets but that's just testament to their relative rarity. If you ever see one, grab it.
Gosh this is so gorgeous. While I do love the salmon? peach? color the forks got, I do think I would have redone it with something even brighter and more obnoxious to match the rest of the components. Unless you have/had grips and cable that match the paint... But still, I think the hot pink looks amazing. Really finding a lot of inspiration from this color scheme. Earlier tonight I saw a jersey that's similar, I think, and then seeing this... It kind of feels like it's roughly lining up with a color palette I've been wanting to play with. Hadn't planned on the blue, but it might work!
Thanks, yes I still absolutely love this colour scheme - and agree with you that it would pop even more if the pale pink were a bit more neon. So you can imagine my delight when I more recently got hold of the bike that started the idea in the first place: the 1991 Team Marin! You can see it on my channel - now that's perfection.
@@red_dread I'll look out for it once I'm back home. Off for an hour ride! Week 2 of cycling for better health 👍
Excellent. I giggled a lot through this one 😅
