2021+ F150 LED DRL Outage Issue, Headlight Disassembly, Part 4
Просмотров 529Месяц назад
In this video I dissect, rather un-methodically, the quad LED headlight I had bought for a test mule! Made some interesting discoveries as to why the LED DRL is out, but would need to tear into a few more to verify. Was not successful in my basic bench test but I will keep researching that and see if I can find a way. I hope you all enjoy the journey and the content! Please like and subscribe, ...

Sense Home Power Monitor, Unbox, Install, and Setup - Is the Power Company Right or Wrong?
Просмотров 149Месяц назад
I often wondered whether my power company has been charging me the correct amount for the power I consume. If they are, what on my "power network" is using the most power and how can I scale it back even more than I have already had too? I aim to answer all that, with the Sense Home Power Monitor!! Sense IS NOT a sponsor of the video, so all this is done and paid for by me. But as a birthday gi...

2021+ F150 LED DRL Outage Issue, Headlight Swap & Pin Testing, Part 2

In this segment I am removing the whole front grille assembly to swap in a used headlight I bought. In full transparency, the guy I bought it from was not sure if it worked fully, but we will test. After that, there will be some PIN testing on the main headlight plug to identify what each wire does so we can use that when we tear into the headlight. I give some opinions on things like engineeri...

2021+ F150 LED DRL Outage Issue, Ballast Swap, Part 1
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 месяца назад
In this video: I am swapping the LED Ballast Controllers on my headlights to see if the DRL issue follows the ballast (ie. a software or driver issue) or stays with the headlight (issue with the array). Pending the outcome of this, we will move to next phase of troubleshooting and repair. Disclaimer: This is my first video upload so please excuse the crudity, nuances of "amateur hour", etc. The...
That was an awesome video.. wow! Very informative. I am having that issue on my truck. By chance have you found the solution?
152k and my driver side just stopped working. Seems if it were mileage/wear would have happened before now. Makes me more suspicious it’s update related.
I believe its more quality control issues. The LED board in my light that I tore down was actually a little loose. I could totally see it being loose enough to contact the array tube and melt it under the right circumstances.
@@DIY1978Guythanks for the reply
20k hours i have on my truck... Prob more important to note
I have no idea how many hours I have, but mine had a little over 36K or so when it went out.
I got 60k and my driver side just went out.
@@Hellmuthsilva my father in law is out too on one side
Man i just got this grill installed and one of the headlight drl, driver side vertical, not working after the install.... They said it wasnt them and just coincidence.. then i see its common.. but so dang weird.
Perfect storm man. Same as it working just fine for 37K miles, through summers, winters, wet, dry... and then one night... boom! Its dead! Quality control is my thesis.
Interesting that there is no cooling fan on the LEDs, the quality LEDs that I have bought have fans integrated into them.
Yes, many of the ones I have bought also have fans. These are so small though, they shouldnt require them. Plus, that would be one more dash alert people would be bringing in their vehicles for, "LED Headlight Fan Issue, Please see dealer immediately! " HAHA.
So lights start over heating and meltng to the point of failure and Ford shortly after realeses an update to dim the brightness of the DLR. Hmmm almost like Ford knows its a manufacturing/engineering issue and are trying to cover it up before it becomes widespread.
That seems plausible. Whats weird is how long it takes to occur. You would think if hot LEDs were going to melt the plastic, it wouldnt take 3 years and 40K miles to do so.
I wonder how much the adaptive headlights differ, since they do not seem to experience this issue at least as much.
I have not had an opportunity to open one up, but it would appear this affects the Quad LED housings more than any other. There are some random projector beam people who have had the issue, but mainly seems to be the Quads. I would love to be able to tear into a projector beam housing and see if they are the same.
Lets keep on going , almost there !!!
Yep! Gotta figure out an easy way to get the lens off these things, and then see if there is an replacement LED board/array tube that can be bought. That will be the challenge.
Same thing with me 50k miles
Annoying isnt it? Its really ticking me off! I turned off the DRLs in the settings, but even that only works during the day. At night, they still on.
I was hoping this would be an easy fix. Thanks for digging into it. Hopefully Ford makes this right. I'll see how much longer I can deal with the issue before I just pull the trigger on some Morimotos. Thanks again. 🤙
Yes, I was hoping it would be "easier" than it has been so far! Not done yet, but still no resolution as of now. Thank you for your comment and support!!
I own the same truck with the same issue
Wait... you own my truck? Why the hell am I paying for it then? LOL!
If I can find a drivers side good replacement I would be glad to send you my broken headlight.
I have a spare now that I am going to use. As of right now I am not sure if the LED arrays are cross functional between the sides. Once I get it apart, I may take you up if your LED arrays work.
Just happened on my 21 at 49k miles, following for update
My 21 just 45k miles and did the same 😢
@@WorkDaMan86 it sucks man, but I think it’s from them being on a lot especially with the approach lighting
Its hella annoying! They last with no issues for all that time and then one day... boom! Its toast!
So glad you are doing this. You are the best fixer upper I know. Good luck. I will be watching.
Thank you so much!! Cant keep a good DIYer down!
My 21 started the same thing this morning. I will be following for an update.
Any updates ???
I just got my truck back from the shop and been knocking out a few things. Hoping I can get the next video done today. Its coming!!
Fellow Facebook page member. Great video! I’m having the same issue with my passenger side. 2021 64k miles
U ever find a fix to it ? And so how u fix it ?
Hey, I got delayed with my truck being in the shop and having to clear out a few other things. Hoping to record the next section of this today!
Same issue
Did u fix it ? I don’t wanna pay a lot to fix it 🤦🏻♂️

Same boat! I am grilling myself on wanting to spend all this money on lights for a truck that hasnt even made 50K miles yet
This just happened on my truck today. But mine is the drivers side vertical. Figures I just went out of warranty. I have the PremiumCARE, but looking at the list, I’m not sure that part of the coverage.
Mine was only a few thousand miles out of warranty too. I have heard of planned obsolescence, but they aren't even waiting and trying to hide it anymore!
It's covered if you opted for the light coverage option which added approximately $70.
@@slednut894 I have not purchased an extended warranty yet. I am looking at them, because of things like this, but also do not expect this kind of failure to be so common. LEDs are supposed to be long lasting lights! :)
Cool experiment
