Led Zeppelin does NOT work when the audience is THAT close. More jazz-inflected bands like Cream or the Jethro Tull could play a "tight" space freely, but not Zeppelin. Note how hesitant Plant is as compared to "usual." I'd be inhibited too, to really kick into that with people on the floor RIGHT there. He opens up into it when he turns back to face Bonham.
