Are we learning from accidents? Understanding the Human Mind
What happens when someone by-passes an alarm, turns the wrong valve on the manifold, ignores a barrier, or leaves a winch lever unattended.
Where does your imagination take you? What questions come to your mind?
Whatever model you follow, whatever methods you use, everything begins with our assumptions about how the human mind and what does it even mean to be a human being?
Much of risk and safety - new or old, traditional or contemporary, 1 or 2 - implicitly assumes that the mind is encased in the brain and we are caught between the left brain / right brain metaphor.
Would you like to understand the science behind decision making? Would you like to find out what leading thinkers and cuttin...

Background In January 2012, the Costa Concordia went aground and capsized off the coast of Italy. About this video In this session, I would like to present the power of framing using the sto...

This short video is part of an extensive study conducted over a period of 7 years to understand why people don't speak up even when faced with imminent danger. The video draws from the example of the Costa Concordia, the passenger ship that went aground off the coast of Italy in January 2012 resulting in the death of 33 persons. I was fortunate to engage with the captain to hear his perspective...

The western model of safety based on harm management is also well presented . Thanks for sharing and congratulations on bringing it so wonderfully together 👏👏

    Culture is the way of life for a society. There are no “society” on board vessels with multinational crew under “other”national management There are no “the way of life” at the working place that is “short term” - a “voyage contract” place of temporary being. The Way of Life cannot be defragmented The reality is that Culture (including Safety Culture) on board modern ships is “forcibly changing the nature / environment “. The original meaning of “culture”

    • @teamnovellus
      @teamnovellus Месяц назад

      everywhere you go you will find cultures, there is no such thing as a culture. but some organisations do better than others in giving people a sense of belonging and identity. shipping is no exception except that it is messy when we have each ship as a subculture in its own.

    I was enthralled during the discussion about the collective unconscious/shared culture, the semiotic expression of the macro/micro levels of culture that were presented that expressed your individuality. For example the mandala behind Nippin, or the drawings and popular culture poster behind Pedro, in themselves an experience of an individuals expression for anyone who is sensitive to semiotics and the relativity to culture

    Thank you Rob and Nippin for the interesting discussion. Coming from a country background whose father is german and where the rural area were made up of german and wendish families. I I have a strong appreciation of the patriarchial structure that exists in Germanic countries, the requirement for conformity, structure and order. In my family and in the community where i grew up women were very much perceived as the homemakers. In the German communities the myth and mythology is very much structured about the male gods. With Odin being the head god.
