Standing ovation. The truth and not some recruiting hype. I came back into insurance out of necessity almost, following the pandemic. I could not find help to work in my brick n' mortar business although I had orders through the roof. I then chose after 30-some years of sales management experience both working for others and my own businesses to pivot and look for a job. I was just tired and burned out from management and being responsible for others, and that ranged from employees to investors. Plus, I had just gone through a divorce and took over managing my mother's care. It zapped me emotionally. I only wanted to show up, do my job, and punch a clock, which would have lasted all of a few weeks before my entrepreneurial spirit would raise its enduring head once again. So, it was best that those efforts were fruitless after 3 months. Being an entrepreneur is an old Indian word for "Unemployable". Even with my diverse resume' and military experience I heard "over-qualified" and "too entrepreneurial" over and over and that was just the companies I could land an interview with. This went on for 3 months. All the while, insurance headhunters and recruiters kept hounding me until I succumbed and decided to give it a shot as a remote captive Medicare agent. I had some experience in Life and Securities dating back to college in '89 to '91. Plus, I'd work from home where I could care for my mother. The advantage I had was being used to selling an intangible product. I worked in and was an owner of health clubs selling memberships with a 90% closing rate for 26 years. My sales process then was the exact same as it is now, I only needed to connect the dots between the two products. Both are sold on emotion. The real advantage that I have is I am a skeptic of salespeople and recruiters are the worst. Trust me, I hired and trained hundreds of salespeople in my years. So, my experience allowed me to hit the ground running. Plus, I had some pretty damn impressive training by my first IMO. That company is a call center grind, but the education I received as a captive agent was the best I have seen. After 12 weeks of paid training, and my non-resident licenses paid for, I was all in. But it did not take long before I started to rise against the constant micro-management resulting in me leaving for another IMO as a 1099 agent. I worked there for nearly 3 years and soaked up everything I could and ended my tenure there with 55% closing as an average. Overall that experience was good, but the cracks began to form around June of 2022, and they folded on April 30, 2024. I made the transition to full-on broker under a well-known FMO that specializes in Final Expense, and I was so far ahead of the curve although I had never sold FEX before. Life insurance is so stupidly simple compared to Medicare. I started that transition back in May and it took longer to get the ball rolling than expected due to contracting for FEX, getting ready for Medicare AEP, and Indemnity. Plus, I am contracted with 15 carriers between the three and waiting on contracts with three more. But now that contracting has settled down, I can sell. I convert 75 - 100% of the leads I get on the phone with one or more products. Is that typical? NO! Not starting out at least, and that is where most agents fold. They fail to invest the time honing their skills and they fall for the song of the recruitment, Siren. She's a manipulator in my experience. What I hope new or potential agents take away is I had a substantial advantage coming back into insurance at 51 years old and a realistic approach to operating a "business" that echoes your words, Ashley. This job requires tough skin, a learning curve, discipline, and tenacity. Plus, I work smarter and not harder. I don't want to endure 100s of calls daily, and I certainly don't want to invest hours into people I can't close, so I work as efficiently as possible. I call it, "Productively lazy", as I want to put in as little time and close 100% if possible, burning through a minimum of leads which costs money. Grinding 8 to 12 hours to make less than $1,000 daily is not an acceptable return on investment for me. My time is way more valuable than that. Get them on the phone, establish rapport immediately, relate and get their emotions peaked, assume the sale, and close them. If they object, take control, rebut, and sell them. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Recognizing these things are a skill set indeed!

I will never ever make the decision of a major purchase in one call or in the same day. I am going to take my time and think about it and run the math and maybe talk to some experts about it before I make these decisions. Any sales person that will not let me do that is trying to sell me something that I don't need or that won't benefit me in the end.
