Videos I Didn't Upload - Stew Leonard's Grocery Shopping Trip February 2023 (From the Vault lol)
Hey Guys -
Hope you are all doing well.
Long time, no video, as usual. Anyway, I was doing some digital decluttering and came across tons of clips for videos I never ended up uploading for a variety of reasons. I have some downtime right now and have decided to put some of them together and upload just for fun.
This particular video is from a grocery shopping trip to Stew Leonard's from February 2023. Maybe you'll enjoy seeing the store and some of the things I bought. Maybe you won't. That's okay.
Anyway, if I stay unbusy for a while, I may be uploading other "from the vault" videos. We'll just see what happens :)
Hope you are all doing well.

A Week in My Life as a Freelance Court Reporter - Christmas in NYC Edition!

We don't need to talk about the fact that this is super late, right??? ' I was so excited to film this video!!! Christmas in NYC is unlike anywhere else. I hadn't been to Dyker Heights since before 2020. The lights are mostly the same, but I really don't remember there being full tour groups and all the vendors and things. It's a little disruptive, in my opinion, but the lights are still so mag...

I've been enjoying a slightly slower pace work-wise than normal, and have loved having room in my schedule for leisure time and self care. I worked an in-person job in this video, and it was super stressful to get back ...

NYC Court Reporter - Work Week in the Life - Last Week of October Working Vlog
Hello! I’m interested in this field but personally don’t like interacting with law enforcement much, does it mainly just involve correspondence with attorneys when you freelance?
Hi!! Yes, it is primarily just attorneys. Sometimes police officers are deposed as witnesses to accidents or in wrongful arrest cases and stuff like that, but that's the only context I can think of that involves law enforcement. Hope this helps!!
@ Thank you! :)
Hi there! I really love watching your videos and wish that you made more! I'm wondering if I could please ask you a few questions about freelancing in New York since I'll be moving there in about a year. Hope to hear from you!! Thanks!
Hi!! Thank you so much for your comment :) I want to make more videos and hopefully will be able to do so soon. I'm happy to try to answer any questions you have in the meantime :)
Hi, I’ve watched a bunch of ur videos, love it! Could you make a video about how you got started in court reporting and where you went to school and stuff? Merry Christmas and happy new year!! 🎉
Your machine is so cool! I dont think ive ever seen one with a wider -ts. I hope theres a way to show the vertical notes on my Mira G2 but im not hopeful at all ✊
how do you like this career?
Am interested to do transcription but I dont know where to start kindly help
Hi. I'm a student reporter, and I've been learning steno since taking the A to Z intro course back jn June. And I'm loving it so far! This channel has DEFINITELY helped me get started in the field, and showed me what I could expect work-wise. I'll write an update in the future, about a year from now :)
Hi - thank you for your comment!! I'm so excited that you're learning steno!!!!! I'm glad these videos give you an idea of what to expect with this career. I had NO clue what to expect when I first started. Didn't even know what a deposition was. I just thought I'd be in a courtroom all day!! I hope you continue to love steno and don't get too discouraged with speed building. I can't wait to read your update in the future!! Best of luck to you!!
hi, i love your videos a lot, are you ok with sharing your estimate annual income as a freelancer? and how much does it fluctuate from year to year? i'm really considering a job like this but i want to make sure i will have enough to support my mom, thank you <3
Hi thanks for your comment! It definitely fluctuates every year based on how many jobs you take. The capacity to make six figures is certainly available to you if you are willing to put in the work. I do travel frequently, and you do not get paid vacation as a freelancer, so there are perhaps four or five weeks each year where I am not taking any jobs and therefore not getting paid. I also generally only take two or three jobs in a week, plus transcription jobs. That said, I have never made less than 75k in a year except 2020, where I was out of work for several months. It's only gone up since then. I hope this helps!
@@okaycat12 wow!! thank you for such a good response :)
@@okaycat12 Do you think the number of jobs in the field will be affected by AI?
@@Nusja Great question. The big question!! My personal belief is no. At least not any time soon. AI may begin to fill in the gaps where there are not enough court reporters, but I believe there is still a preference for real court reporters if there is an option, and also a healthy skepticism of AI in the legal field. I have encountered several law firms that have specifically requested no AI be used in the creation of transcripts, and I know there are prohibitions on the use of AI in the creation of other legal documents as well. I think the rejection of AI could continue to increase, especially for matters deemed highly confidential or attorneys'-eyes only. Only time will tell, of course. Hopefully this comment ages well lol
@@okaycat12 Thank you, that sounds encouraging! I've read very mixed opinions on this, some are quite pessimistic. I'm in an administrative field that won't benefit from AI that much, so I'm considering a career shift. Your videos are very helpful!
Hiiiiiii I’m 38 and graduated as an English major, but I’ve really really considered court reporting. I love watching your videos because they’re so insightful! There’s not a lot of content out there. I know you’re extremely busy with this work, and that this work has a confidential side to it, but I do look forward to seeing if you publish more content 😊
Hi!!! Thank you for your thoughtful comment. You are right that I have been extremely busy recently with work. I really do want to make some more videos though!! This comment could be the push I needed!! :)
@@okaycat12 I’m really glad to read your comment! I’m doing a lot of research right now to see if this path would be good for me :) I think it may be! Maybe I can reach out about your experiences sometime?
Did you grow up in NYC or did you move for court reporting? Love your content!
Hi there - I moved here to be with my bf with one semester of court reporting school left to go :)
Here to see if this might be for me and the dress over pajama pants had me immediately. XD Thanks for making these videos it helps a lot and is appreciated!
JUST AMAZING!!!!! 👏 👏👏 Y'ALL DEFINITELY USE A PART OF THE BRAIN MOST Ppl DONT USE!!!!! BRAINIAC MIND BLOWN 🤯🤯🤯
Are u an active CR? How long have u been doing it? I quit CR school thinking i wouldn't like it. Now, struggling financially i am thinking about returning. I was testing out of 180.
Hi there - Yes, I am an active freelance court reporter. I have been doing it for about six years. I love it!!! You could try shadowing some freelance and official reporters and see if you would like it. If you're at 180, you definitely have the capability of getting to 225!!
Ok if I understand correctly, if I want to be able to work remotely 100%, I can only work on depositions and NOT the actual court proceedings?
451 pages!?!?!?!?!?
Hey! I’ve been researching about court reporting. Did you see a lot of freelancing opportunities in New York? I’m from there. For example, is it easy to pick up freelance jobs? I’m also interested in official court reporting (in a court room) because of the set hours. Do you have any experience with the court setting, and how was it like if you do? I understand that learning the steno machine takes a long time so I wanted to know what the job is like.
Hi there - thank you for your comment. There are tons of freelance opportunities available in NYC. I am kept quite busy here and sometimes have to turn down jobs because my plate is too full. I personally love freelancing because I set my own schedule and can work as much or as little as I want to. I have never worked in the courts, so unfortunately I can't help you there. I do know they get benefits and set hours, so that is a huge plus. I would recommend shadowing both types of reporters so you can see which is a better fit for you!
OG Ramune is the ish. What We Do in the Shadows is so good!
Looks like my lil old diamante writer 😊
I saw her commencement speech live at Yankee Stadium! I’m currently in court reporting school and am hoping to go back to NYC when I graduate. I love seeing steno content on YT and social media because it pushes me to finish my program ❤ Thanks!
I’m thinking about going to school for court reporting after I graduate with my B.S in journalism in may…it seems very interesting. It’s between this and law school so🤞🏾
Holy shit you’re in my same exact situation I was considering either this or law school after graduating with my journalism degree. What did you end up deciding?
Thank you so much for these videos! It helps us little guys out especially since this isn't a big career; Not a lot of people know about this. So as an inspiring court reporter, you truly give motivation to keep going!! <3 uwu)/
Thanks for sharing! I’m interested in becoming trained as a voice writer versus a steno writer. Essentially, the only thing I’d replace in this setup is the steno machine. Instead of using a steno machine, I’d be using an Eclipse Vox software with Dragon as well, which is the voice writing software that allows one to write the transcripts using the voice instead of typing. Also, I can start working as soon as I’m certified, but I do like your setup with the two computers connected to each other. I find that brilliant. I think I’m interested in doing remote depositions from home instead of doing court proceedings because I like the atmosphere better. This helps a lot! Thank you!
Such a good video. I loved everything about your travels, ugh, I miss home. Continued success wishes for you. xoxo
Are you a reporter in MI? I see that you are transcribing and digits reporting. Do you have any advice for transcribing and staying organized as a reporter?
Love all the cooking commentary. The "day in the life" videos are definitely the basis of my inspiration.
I appreciate your videos. You inspire me to keep working toward passing my speed tests.
YES!!! Keep going!!!! You can do it :) just trust the process 💕
I have been using your videos as inspiration throughout my schooling. I'm so in love with your life and can't wait to join the Depo Reporter field. I was wondering if you could possibly contact me so I could ask a little more about your profession.🥰 I would love that. Thank you so much! :D
Hi!! Thank you for your comment :) I'm happy to (try to) answer any questions you might have!!
@@okaycat12 Thank you so much for your response. I didn't get the notification until today. I was hoping you could tell me how you transitioned from student to depo reporter. Do you take state tests to get certified? (Some states don't require that so I'm a little lost how to get started in those states.) How did you go about getting your first job? Did you interview with a court reporting agency and they put you to work after assessing your skill level? I'm very interested. Wishing you the best!!
Hi!! Yes, you're right. NY is one of the states that does not require certification. I just contacted a reporting agency and asked if they work with new reporters. They did do an interview but it was no big deal. They were very welcoming and encouraging and let me shadow with them for as long as I felt like I needed before taking my own deposition. I think it was a couple months that I shadowed before I took my first job. Once you get close to graduating, you will probably be contacted by many agencies trying to get fresh blood LOL so that is also an option. Anyway, hope this helps!! Good luck to you :)
@@okaycat12 This is exceedingly helpful!! I didn't know you could shadow people for depos especially if you work remote. Did you have to meet reporters in person and follow them to physical locations?
Yes, you sure can shadow!! I did it before remote depos were a thing, so it was all in person, but they do it remotely now too, I believe.
Hello again! I hope all is going well for you this new year. :) I drop by because I started Speed Building1 this spring semester. Yay! I will need to interview a freelance reporter soon. Would you be available to answer a few questions via email? I would be so grateful as I really enjoy your videos and personality. The paper isn't due until February 9th, so there is no last-minute rush or pressure. If you are available, let me know and I'll respond with my email. Thank you!!
Hi! I could definitely answer some questions for you, with the exception of revealing my real name. Just wanted to say that first in case that's a requirement for your assignment. I hope your semester is going well so far!!
Thank you for posting this! I'm finishing up theory right now, and have always wondered how much my fingers should move across the keys when writing.
You are the jazz musicians of the courtroom....
Hi! I messaged you one year ago. I attend Alfred State and just finished theory. You inspired me to attend Alfred, and I love it so far! Spring semester will be my first speed building class. During the winter break, I'm trying to reach a solid 100 wpm. What would be your best piece of advice? What were you focusing on the most at this stage? I'm really trying to drill short phrases. Thank you for your videos! Please do more! They are very encouraging to us students :)
Hi!!!!! Omg this makes me so happy!!! I'm so glad you're enjoying it so far :) Speed building is much more challenging than theory, so please just don't get discouraged. You won't pass every speed test, and that's okay!!! I would have like a dry spell of not passing speed tests, and then all of a sudden I would be up several levels from where I was before. Just trust the process and keep practicing. Remember that it's a combination of writing faster and shorter, so make sure you're working on getting your finger speed up (no hesitation) as well as your short forms engrained in your brain. One thing that helped me with speed was to try to avoid using the asterisk key. I would get stuck in a circle of trying to remember my short form, delete, another attempt, delete, another attempt, delete, and then just writing it out the long way anyway. Look how many strokes that wasted! And then I would have to drop words to catch up again. Just do your best to hit your best approximation and then keep moving. You can (and should) go back later to practice that short form until you can do it without hesitation, but don't linger on it during speed practice or speed takes. Anyway, I hope this helps. Thank you for posting this update, and I look forward to hearing more from you in the future!!!
Thank you for your very thoughtful response! You make a really good point about not overdoing the asterisk. This will no doubt slow anybody down. I really appreciate you sharing a few tips. This has been so helpful and encouraging. I'll check in sometime next year!! Have a Happy New Year! 2024! Yay!
Is going to Alfred as a part time student a year or two years?
This is the coolest thing in the world! Also, is there something synonymous with Stenography and women? Women seem to be amazing stenographers
Hi!! Thank you for your comment. I think it's just traditionally and stereotypically considered a woman's job, so you see more women doing it. There are many great male court reporters too!! Check out Mark Kislingbury for proof!!
I definitely will, thank you for being so awesome at your career!@@okaycat12
This is so fun to watch!
Fascinating! Thanks for showing this. You have great mental and listening skills.
Hello, thank you for your videos. I am a Notary Public in NYC, I am interested in becoming a court reporter. I read that if you are a notary, you don't have to take an exam? Is this accurate? If so, what steps should I take? I will be practicing at home for now. Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Hi - thank you for your comment!! It is true that you do not need to take an exam in New York, but I do think you need to complete an NCRA-approved certificate program or associate's degree program in addition to the notary license. You can check out NCRA's website for a list of schools, including some that are fully online. They also have a free intro program called A to Z that can help you see if court reporting is a good fit for you. I hope this helps!!
@@okaycat12 thank you!
Hello! I was wondering were you get your jobs. Do you work for a firm or company? I live in NYC as well and was curious about jobs that are available. Thanks!
Hi there - thank you for your question!! Yes, I get all of my jobs through agencies. There are quite a few in NYC, though many of the smaller firms are being bought up by the huge national companies, like Veritext and Lexitas. I hope this helps!!
Hey girl! Love your videos, thanks for posting. I did 3 months of self-teaching/exploring theories and 4 months into schooling now. I learned all of StenEd and I’m going through all the dictations now. I’m at around 80wpm and getting faster each week. Super excited to get to where you’re at 😊
Hi - that is so awesome!!! I hope you're enjoying it so far. The higher speeds will be more challenging, but please don't get discouraged if you don't get them right away!!! You can do it. Just keep practicing. You'll have to keep me posted on your progress :)
How long did u go to shool for cort reporting
Hi - My program was five semesters, so it was a little over two years because I started in the spring semester instead of fall. Hope this helps!
I live in California and was wondering how would I get started and is it better working from home
@@sweetlady3651 I know California has different requirements than New York when it comes to certification, but you can start by checking the NCRA's website for a list of approved schools. They also note which ones have a completely online program, if that's something you're interested in. NCRA also has a FREE online intro program called "A to Z" that could help you see if court reporting is the right career path for you before you enroll in and pay for a school program. As far as working from home, I was working exclusively from home for a little over two years and loved it, but now I do a mix of both working from home and taking in-person jobs and I think I prefer it this way :) I hope this helps!
@okaycat12 thank you so much for replying. I appreciated your time, and I'll look into that
I'm starting court reporting theory soon with my lil steno, and this gives me a good idea of what I'll be doing. Thanks so much for making this. Wish me luck
Ahhh that is so exciting!!! It's a really tough program, but it is also very rewarding. I love my career!! Good luck to you!!!

I really enjoyed this video, thank you for uploading. I’m thinking about doing transcriptions and listening to your daily really helped! ❤
Thank you for your comment 🥰 I have really been loving my transcription work lately. It gives me a nice balance and I just generally feel less stressed out. I'd say it's worth trying if you are interested 😊
your videos inspire me to practice!! i know ive commented on your videos before, but i am going for 200 and so close, this is exactly what i want to be doing ! ( and i am in NYC too, even more motivating !)
wow 200!! You are soooo close to being done. That is so exciting!! One thing that helped me at that point is to start trying to write as short as possible. Your finger speed maxes out at a certain point, but you can always implement better short forms so you have fewer strokes. You will love this career. There's lots of work available here in NYC, and you can do as much (or as little) as you want! Anyway, good luck to you!!! Keep me posted on your progress 😊
That's awesome. I am in NYC as well are you attending a program? If so, which one? I would prefer to practice at home.
I work from home doing insurance total loss claims. I haven't worked in person in over 2 years. Its interesting watching how others work from home and manage their time. Enjoyed your video!
Hi - thank you for your comment!!! Insurance claims sound interesting. Do any of your cases involve depositions? I get a lottt of car accident and property damage cases lol Hopefully you are enjoying working fully remote!!! I still kind of struggle with time management, especially being self-employed, but I'm just a lot happier doing things on my own!! My last in-person was in March 2020, and I just started taking a couple in-person depos in January 2023, so almost three whole years being fully remote. The variety is kind of nice now though 😊 Anyway, hope you're doing well!!
@@okaycat12 many of the cases do involve litigation and we have to place the claim on hold until the litigation is completed and the vehicle is released. Most are straightforward and we have a lot of theft as well. I don’t think I could go back to commuting and working in an office. My job is very production driven and we have goals we have to meet daily, weekly, monthly but some days it’s hard to stay on task. I will usually turn on music or an audio book and just zone out and work. Probably not easy for you to do that as you have to listen to people speaking!
