This was my Absolute Favorite Anime growing up in Middle School. Running home from School to watch it on Toonami. I watched all of them Over and Over again. The Original Series, Tenchi Universe and the other Spin-off he forgot to mention for didn't know about Tenchi in Tokyo. Where Tenchi moves out to go to school. I was so into this series. I had went around and told people to call me Tenchi. And would introduce myself as so to new people I would be growing up. Who still too this day call me Tenchi haha. FYI: Ryoko was Best Girl!

So, what's the "if you know, you know" on the spaceship rabbit? I know you can't SAY, but give me a few words that'll get me close in a google search, I'll get the rest myself.

I would suggest against letting the spaceship drink, or get near catnip, it never goes well.

Tenchi Muyo was the first ever anime I watched, way back then. It made no sense to young pre teen me, but I loved it. I had no clue why it was good, it just was. It felt mature on a network that mainly played Hannah Barbera cartoons.(Cartoon Network here in the UK) Thanks for reminding me of those times, and thanks for showing me how to spell Tenchi Muyo.

Dang all the burns for the GenX adults your giving. As a 46 Year old... I never grew up with Toonami but I saw Tenchi on tv back in the 80s. I have the DVDs. The soundtrack is still awesome. The art is never seen these days. I never got to the end of the series.

My first experience with Tenchi Muyo was Tenchi Muyo the Movie (Tenchi Muyo in Love) on the Sci-Fi channel. I was quite happy to be able to get more Tenchi action on Toonami a couple years (or so) later!

TM Ryo Ohki and its timeline at this point is incredibly nuanced and has an EXTENSIVE history beyond just the OVAs. Problem is, if you want ALL the information, you need to peruse the non-animated content in great detail. Half the background is in the light novels and doujins Kajishima's made over the years. When presented with this situation, most 'fans' immediately become a little bit on the entitled-brat side. Kinda' sad. Now if'n you'll excuse me, I'm afraid it's been too quiet for more than half an hour, which means the demigod in the form of a thorny little mesquite tree is up to somethin- I HEARD that giggle! Frickin' first gen trees and their remote bioroid terminal bodies. Think 'Avatar' (the movie), but it's a supernatural space god-tree taking a child's body for a joy ride. Except the Child's body has the durability of Looney Toon, and a personality influenced by said toons.

That opening theme song was the GOAT.

I was 10 and I knew how to use the internet and everything back to DOS. Also Tenchi Muyo confused the hell out of me on Cartoon Network - I could tell it was two different timelines but 10 year old me just thought they would resolve to one because they were being clever or something.

In music I call it the "Fleetwood Mac" experiment. If you research the love history of Tori Amos and Trent Reznor, you see a repeat of the "Pain equals Art." approach many successful Artists utilize, if not weaponize. Seether and Evanescence another example, if not 2 or 3 examples in of itself.

I also grew up with tenchi on toonami. but i was a level 20 weeaboo back then i used the library to research all my favorite things. I didnt even know it was really still kickin i never hear about it so i never even knew it became obscure.

best of 90's anime ever...Tenchi Muyo, Trigun, Eat-man, Ninja Scroll (movie), Ghost in the shell (movie), Dragon Ball Z Movies, Ghost stories, Neon Genesis Evanghelion, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Great teacher Onizuka...from 90 till 2015 where the best era of anime....after that we have fan-service , Computer Games themes or Isekai ....i prefer the old ones (anime ), rather then the new one....i like some new ones but with exceptions.....

I'm not watching this whole video to find out what I already know, or maybe I will later, but Masaki Kajishima also made a very short show called "Photon the idiot," and was the key animator on one of my favorite animes "Project A-ko" a spoof on the 'Girl' Manga and Anime of the day. Just some fun facts that are probably not mentioned.

I loved watching tenchi muyo as a kid, and I will admit that the continuity was very confusing between them playing the OVA, universe, and tenchi in Tokyo. I had watched a few sequels over the years but I really sat down and rewatched the main timeline around 2021, and eventually made it to the newer ovas. I also discovered that there are several non tenchi shows that are apart of the same universe like photon.

hey Austin.. what I failed to understand in this video: Which version of Tenchi Muyo do you recommend now? It sounds like you recommend the anime version that ran as a series rather then the OVAs or manga timelines or however they are classified.

I’m 37, 38 in a couple of months and Tenchi is still one of my favorites!! Before Toonami there was SyFy’s Saturday night anime and the OVA’s shown on there is what helped me get into anime, with Tenchi being one of the first. My husband is Japanese and so we have his laserdisc player hooked up in the living room and will watch some really old school OVA’s, a lot of the time though they don’t have subtitles so that’s fun

would be fckin crazy if the show that took lightsabers influenced future star wars movies tho

The aesthetics of space travel and tech in Tenchi Muyo are fantastically unique. It's like some kind of retro spacepunk 80's Japanese mythology.

Tenchi Muyo in Love was the first anime movie I've ever watched on the Sci-fi channel in the 90s

I had fun with GXP it was more comedic than Ryo ohkki but I loved Ryo ohkki so much

Mind you, If this were on Amazon Prime as a series. I'd be so happy if they properly redub the whole show from scratch
