Even before her variety show, Judy had had a rather tumultuous relationship with CBS. She had previously sued the network for breach of contract. So, the fact that some of the top execs, like James Aubrey, had it in for her makes more sense. Also, Judy doing a WEEKLY series was always a mistake IMHO. A series 2 or 3 specials a season would've been a much better use of her talent, as each one would've probably have been a ratings hit. Anyhow, TV business was very different 60 years ago

Judy Garland had completed filming the 1939 MGM Beautiful, Beloved, Brilliant, Classic, Clever, Delightful, Excellent, Fantastic, Grand, Iconic, Marvelous, Outstanding, Perfectly Cast, Spectacular, Splendid, Wonderful, Fantasy Musical Movie, The Wizard of Oz, in the middle of February 1939.

Thank you so much for this wonderful discussion and showcasing. I've been a fan since the age of four - 1966. Judy is that rare kind of star one can rediscover time and again throughout their life, and she's just as fresh, invigorating, and spellbinding as the first time you fell in love with her. She has to be the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. I recently began binge-watching her TV show, and I cannot believe it was cancelled. She looks amazing, she's in great voice, the guest list is beyond impressive, the sets are creative, and I love the physical freedom she has not only with guests, but also during the closing Born in a Trunk sequences. To Kelly's point, she still reaches new audiences. I was a 5th grade teacher for 25 years and used clips from Judy's films to illustrate specific vocabulary and concepts, and the students were always completely engaged. By the time they were assigned biographic essays, never a year went by that several chose Judy Garland as their subject.

Judy Garland is always so fascinating. Of course her singing and talent is just beyond expression but she's always interesting as a person too.

Andy went all out for Judy, made her feel like the star she was, sets, her songs, and jokes and everything. Total class. She couldn't sing as well as she used to at this point, going flat, but nobody cared, they loved her and her comedic timing was perfect. During the Clark Gable thing, she busted Andy up with her serious stare, she never flinched and broke character. He lost it laughing. I felt their embrace toward the end was very sincere.

MGM at this point had no idea what to do with relatively newcomer Judy Garland, so for her very first full length feature film, they lent her out to 20th Century Fox. Needless to say, after watching her performance in Fox's 1936 Pigskin Parade, for the next 14 years, they never lent her out again. At the time, audiences were amazed by this young girls mature voice, and MGM knew it had something special on it's hands.
