McCarthy Alaska ADV Camping Trip 2022
Hi Ryan, I am thinking of buying an OGT and registering it in Alaska. Can I ask you some questions please?
I will do my best to help.
I heard the trailer sctaches easy is this true? Thanks
The colored part of the trailer is a wrap. I haven't had an issue with scratches, but I would assume they would be rather permanent if they occurred. The rest of the trailer has some pinstripping but washes and waxes out with ease.
Welcome to the club! I've had mine for a little over two years now and put well over 100 nights in it.
It's been awesome. See you out there.
Nice video, felt like I was riding it again. Rode the Denali highway for the first time after D2D, came south from Fairbanks and camped just past the Sustina in an area just east of the river. Stopped for breakfast at Tangle Lake lodge on the way towards Delta Junction. Also had great weather, incredible views and road was in good condition. Sub'd for the next installment.
I'll get the second part done soon... darn work. Thanks for watching tho.
out of touch financially, unfortunately!!, very nice though!!
Disagree. If I had to spend as much as he did to go pick up a trailer I'd leave a review and rundown too. He even said verbatim that not everyone is able to do that. 😂
Any tent camping in the area? heading up in a week.

Any tent camping in the area? heading up in a week.
There are a few campgrounds on the road up to the pass, mile 10.5 Government Peak Campground, mile 14ish, Gold Mint, and Mile 17 Fishhhook Trailhead have spots for tent camping. Stay bear aware!
I saw a motorhome (small) down the other side the direction you were going all the way to Alfred creek. I've spent a lot of time in this area over the past 40+ years. Taking some friends back up in a couple weeks to play and listen to live music at the lodge.
Very cool!
I am not seeing these listed for my 2015 1290 super adventure but the area seems to be hte same. Any idea if they would work?
Not 100% sure, but I think the set up is the same.
Thank you for sharing! Your videos are really great, but the views per video are much less. have you ever tried to know why your videos are not getting views?
Hello, I hope you are well. I have researched your RUclips channel {Alaska Family Overland Adventures}. Your content is excellent but I have found many reasons why your RUclips channel is not growing appropriately and why your Subscribers, Views, Likes, and Comments are not increasing. Your SEO Optimization Score is Very Low, Proper search engine optimization (SEO) can significantly impact ranking. Your channel is not optimized for relevant keywords, it may not appear in search results or suggested videos. You are not Consistently uploading videos. Your Engagement Metrics are very few. And you are not maintaining Metadata Optimization. Your channel's Audience Retention is very low. Also, your video is not being Correctly Promoted on other Social Media. If you can solve those problems correctly you will get lots of Organic Traffic and Engagement day by day on your RUclips channel which will increase your Exposure more than before. How has it held up? Im thinking about buying a used one.
So far so good. It's been holding strong for us. No complaints.
Can you put a trickle charger on it?
Not sure if that would have enough juice...
What do you use for a toilet since none off the offroad campers have one?
We have a foldable toilet with the bags from REI. Works well with no mess and saves space.
What lake is this? Thanks
This was Cooper Lake on the Kenai Peninsula.
@@alaskafamilyoverlandadvent5047 awesome thank you for the info
If u don’t mind me asking how high is the seat with the lowered suspension?
About 33.5".
enjoy the family time next thing you know you will be at graduation. nice scooter. i just did tires on a friends 23 and darn there fun as heck. enjoy the day and #livetoride
I'm sure it's just a blink of the eye... Thanks for watching.
Excellent!
Many thanks!
If she wants to sell it, please let me know. Respectfully.
I think she loves it too much.
How tall is your wife?
About 5'7".
🎉
Thanks for watching.
She skipped a few steps there between a 310 and 1250! And apparently added a “step” in between there too! Congratulations! The R1250GS is a fantastic motorcycle. The heated seat is not standard on the GSA…it is optional on both the GS and GSA. It actually handles very lightly with the low COG.
Awesome! Thank you! She loves the handling so far.
It’s unridable because of what again?
She was very pregnant and didn't want to ride until having baby. Thanks for watching.
I see your gs has the halogen headlight did you get the retrifit voycher to get the led fitted
We didnt... but I'm gonna ask now.
@@alaskafamilyoverlandadvent5047 i would pal if your bike is a te then it should have shipped with the adaptive led yours must have come off production between 1st aug and end of sept same as mine i was made aware of the voucher i would get to claim my led once available . And further more the voucher had 2 options led light or £500 of bmw goods or services and due to it taking 9 months to supply the light bmw uk offered us all the £500 az well so my led is on now and in 3 weeks my bike goes for 6k service at which i will use the voucher and pay £250 that gets me service inclusive for 3 years and 18k so should get 2 small servuces and 2 big services
Have you been this year yet? Me and a buddy are doing the loop today starting in Wasilla . Great video!!💯👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Been over a few times. Love this ride.
Great video thanks! How slick does the pass get in the rain?
It depends on how well the road gets maintained and time of year. This year, not much gravel and mostly dirt so I'd expect slippery and muddy conditions.
Congratulations, beautiful bike. Just took my 18 1200 GS to Tuk, Dawson, Fairbanks, Anchorage and back home to SS Island BC.
Thanks. That sounds like an epic ride.
Very nice rundown. I’m from Juneau, but live in the SW now - Would definitely need that AC option! Keep the videos coming; that was great!
Thanks for watching. We lived in Juneau for a couple years (too much rain for me). In hindsight... wish we had done the AC prep just in case we ever do some long-term travel.
Congratulations brother…on both new additions
Thanks 👍
Best bike ever . !! I have a gs 1200 black too. !
Awesome machine.
Nice job you have . !
Thanks!
8 weeks ??
I don't remember what I said there...
Nice . how many months can you ride there 2. ???
Solid riding from April thru Sept. Depending on snow and temp you can sometime sneak into March and October.
CONGRATULATION ON THE BABY AND BIKE! HAVE FUN!
Thank you! Will do!
I found out the 1250GS is much easier to handle than the smaller 850GS...
Thats the word on the street. Plus Laurel is a strong rider so I think she'll be awesome on it.
Better ask "Are you pregnant?" before buying a bike 😆👍🏻👍🏻
That's the funny part, when we put the deposit down, she wasn't. All good.
Congratulations on the new kiddo and 1250. 👍🏼 👏👏 👍🏼
Thank you so much 😀
Congrats with your second son, hope everything goes well. Enjoy the kids and then the bikes
Thanks, will do!
Best motorcycle ever built. Congrats on both new editions.
Thanks! Fun times all around.
My wife has the exact same bike! She loves it. I have the low suspension 1250 GS Adventure and I couldn’t be happier. Both of ours are Triple Black. Congratulations to you guys and good luck with new new baby!
Thanks! They're beautiful motorcycles for sure.
Where is the start of the trailhead?
It is at mile 66 ish of the Glenn Hwy at the Kings River. Safe travels.
@@alaskafamilyoverlandadvent5047 thanks me and my buddy are going up there in his yota on Saturday.
Can you show me the way up to ruby lake. I really would like to know the trail to get up there
I guess I need to get better at showing maps or describing these things. Kings River Trail, following the main trail towards Red Mountain.
Love the boxer motor
Definitely a smooth machine a
Cant stand the boxer motor...
I don't like the cylinders sticking out but can't argue with smoothness of power.
You can’t stand the boxer based on?
@@davidkendall1614 That big stupid motor sticking out 18 inches on each side makes for a 40"width,, and the Atrocious lean angles.. My bike engine is 10 inches... MAX.
@@spencervidal3168 Bullshit. Check your measurements. You don’t have feet? The heads on my GS extend about 3 inches farther than the foot pegs. They extend 10 inches from the frame. And according to the app taking onboard measurement, I am pulling lean angles almost 40 degrees without even trying and nowhere near touching the heads. If the your engine is 10 inches wide, you must have a small single. And it is in a frame, with pegs, and cannot be 10 inches wide overall. A pedal bike is wider than that. I used to think the boxer was stupid for off-road. And on a narrow single track…less than 40 inches wide …sure a narrower bike would be better. The advantage though is that it gives an extremely low COG and the handling is superior vs a top heavy narrow bike. Plus if you do drop it, it is very easy to pick up vs a bike laying flat. Get a GS on a twisty and you’ll see what “atrocious lean angles” will yield. Better yet, ride one.
@@davidkendall1614 Ya, swapped with a friend of mine a couple of years ago just for shits a giggles and I was scraping the heads on the asphalt twisties and when we went off road was smashing the heads on all kinds of obstacles, rocks, brush and stumps. Not to mention it weighs 560 lbs full of gas.. That thing is a pig and a TURD... And an expensive one at that...
Although in storage. Please keep an eye on factory recalls while still under warranty.
Absolutely, already had one too. Thanks for watching.
Hi, i see you don t have the standard light on your bike, the LED one and got stuck with the halogen one... Same with my GSA that i got new from factory in october 2023. Don t use their 500 $ voucher they send you, the light itself costs 1700 $... Still waiting for them to replace it with the LED one (9 months now)... Ride safe, V from France !
It was a bummer for sure but not a deal breaker. Luckily our riding season in Alaska is 90% daylight. Thanks for watching.
Congrats. Best wishes.
Thank you!
Oh my goodness, congratulations on the new family member! And congrats on the beautiful motorcycle.
Thank you so much 😀
