    I have a very small master bath that is accessible by two doors. I am not able to do anything permanent, but I would LOVE to cover one of them up so that it doesn't look as if there are two doors. I thought this might be a more popular topic, but I haven't found anything really as of yet. The door I would like to cover enters the master bedroom. I will use curtains in the bedroom to cover this door. We do not have an exhaust fan in the bathroom, so I am not partial to curtains in the bathroom. I have a frosted glass on the bottom panel of the one window in the bathroom to allow for more light since I have plants in the bathroom. Someone suggested a partition to cover the door, but the room is too small and this would take away needed floor space. Any ideas???

    • @MichaelHelwig
      @MichaelHelwig Месяц назад

      Hi Kathleen, thanks for the comment. I like the curtain idea. A folding screen is also another way to add a non-permanent cover up. You could make a custom screen from inexpensive wood and maybe a coordinating fabric as panels on the screen. That way, you can make it as tall as you'd like to cover the door best. This is a good solution if you need to access the door too. :)

      I hear ya! Square rooms are tricky, right? I've often found that floating seating configurations work best in square rooms- especially ones with multiple doorways, fireplaces, stoves, and other architectural features.

    I have a 9x10 BR with a queen size bed pushed into one corner. I have just enough space for a small night table, a small dresser with mirror, a wooden chair on the angled wall, a small storage box at the foot of the bed and a slim table to hold a flat TV. Its tight. I need a better layout.

    I have a bed room that measures 9 x 8. Can you give me some decor ideas.

    • @MichaelHelwig
      @MichaelHelwig 2 месяца назад

      Hi Felicia, Thanks so much for the comment. So, small rooms can definitely be tricky. If you watched the airbnb video, the 2nd bedroom was 9'x8'. That's small, but not tiny. My advice would be to keep the decor minimal. I don't mean sparse, like no decor and all white walls. I mean, keep it to the most necessary things. In fact, you might want to use items like hats, handbags, scarves, makeup, anything that you use daily - can be arranged aesthetically, as your decor. For example, use the vertical space: walls for displaying a hat collection on a wall. You could install shelves on the wall to display handbags. Suddenly, the items that you use every day have become your bedroom decor, and you've used the vertical space in the room. Second piece of advice would be to get furniture that can do double duty. A make-up vanity with an attached mirror can be a desk, a place to put on make-up, and a place to store clothes. So, this spot can also be outfitted as a focal point in the room: install small shelves on the wall around it for things like your go to perfume bottles. This is another example of using your wall space, the vertical space, as a spot to display your favorite items. I guess you can say that the main theme of decorating a small bedroom would be go for the most necessary items, focus on using your everyday items, parts of wardrobe, as decor. (Heck you could even display your favorite shoes on a shelf on the wall - instead of being stored away in a closet. I'd also argue, that when you display your favorite wardrobe pieces in this way, you're honoring them. They're way less likely to get damaged on display then in a closet, piled over with everything else, you know?) So, keep things minimal, intentional, and multi-functional in a small bedroom. Hope this helps? :)

    How can I create a Master Bedroom in a 9 x 18 space. The space needs to include a large closet and if possible increase the small bath which is approximately 6 x 4.

    • @MichaelHelwig
      @MichaelHelwig 3 месяца назад

      Without more context, I cannot offer specific solutions for your bedroom/ bath. 9' x 18' is actually a very decent size bedroom. Depending on the placement of windows and doors, and other architectural features, maybe a dormer roof... You should be able to build into the room to increase the size of your closet. Or, perhaps there is a space on the 18' side of the room where a new closet can be constructed? Or perhaps the existing closet is near the existing bathroom and part of, or all of , the closet can be used as the expanded bathroom? (See what I mean about context? I'm only able to speculate...) Either way, my advice would be to list exactly what you need to have in your functional bedroom: a bed (size of bed), furniture, TV, lounge space... Closet: clothes storage: hanging, shelves, drawers, cabinets, a dressing area, mirror. Bathroom: sink, toilet, shower, bath, shelving, hanging space, towel bars, make-up vanity. See? If you list out exactly what you need, the space to accommodate the needs will be more clear. And, once the needs are determined, you should begin to see the different ways to use the space and/or expand it. One final piece of advice would be to be mindful of "needs" vs. "wants" as you begin to see exactly how much space you have. For example, you may want a lounge space in the bedroom, but if it costs you valuable space that can be better used for the closet or bathroom expansion, you might rather go for the "need" over the "want." Hope this helps? Best, :)

    Hi Michael thank you so much for this video. I am presently building a tiny home and the contractor tells me I can only get a 9ft x 12ft bedroom I was really expecting a bigger bedroom but your video put my mind at ease. I do not think I have enough space for a closet and then a dresser. Any ideas? Help. Ill be using a full size bed.

    • @MichaelHelwig
      @MichaelHelwig 4 месяца назад

      If you have room for one piece, I suggest a wardrobe, chifforobe. With a piece like this you can usually have hanging storage and maybe a couple of larger drawers or a group of small to medium drawers. They're great solutions for clothes storage in rooms without closets.

    Really nice work! I have found that decluttering is essential to good design outcomes. I fought clutter for years but once I let go, I didn't need the big furniture end tables and cabinets that destroyed our ability to reach a good feeling home. Once all that bulk was gone the home came together through planning each space for maximum zen. You simply cannot put huge bulky furniture in small rooms and expect good outcomes.

    At first I was thinking man I wish I could hire you to come help me with my sons room..but then I was thinking, I bet he'd be impressed with what I have been able to do in the little room. I basically made everything in the room, a giant puzzle. I bought a wood loft and then basically went off that and cut it down and around and in-between. I'm OCD and obsessed with symmetry and i must have everything flowing perfectly. My son gets so irritated with me because it's basically always changing and I'm always figuring out a different way to make things work better. But he's not understanding that I'm also changing things for him as he's getting bigger and older things just need to change for what his needs are. The other factor we've got in his room is its also having to be a space that's for my clothes and vanity as well, which I've dedicated a corner for my stuff and have that sort of divided from the main bedroom/his space. After coivid I ended up needing to move in with my elderly Mother. 2bdrm 1bth with my son being the only male, I decided he absolutely had to have the bedroom. I just needed a space for storing my clothes which im fairly minimalist so that isnt a big deal. But i do admit it can get frustrating not having my own personal space. Luckily this isn't permanent and within the next year we'll have a different home that'll provide much more separated space for the 3 of us

    • @MichaelHelwig

      I use a pillow underneath because I like my head elevated. The pillows are holding up great. I've had them about a year now. The filling is really sofa. I'm a "warm" sleeper and no issues with being too warm either. I do fluff my pillows every day when I make my bed and they fill up beautifully each time, just like in the video. I also left all the filling in b/c I like a "fluffyer" pillow. Bottom line, I love them! Hope this was helpful. :)

    Just found your channel and am enjoying it! One question (re Peeve #2 - angeled furniture): isn't that brown chair over your right shoulder angeled? Not trying to be petty or nitpick but do you mean that literally NO furniture should be angeled or is it okay to angle an accent chair? 35:39

    • @MichaelHelwig
      @MichaelHelwig 7 месяцев назад

      I'm so glad you're enjoying my channel. Thanks for the chance to clarify. You are correct, the chair in my office, over my shoulder, is indeed angled. What I mean is don't angle furniture where it will block a pathway or cause an unnecessary obstruction in a room. For example, angling a sofa across a room where you would have to adjust your navigation into and through the room. Or, angling a bed across the room in a small bedroom - making it difficult to walk around. Angling a chair in a corner is fine because that usually helps to facilitate a functional conversation type seating arrangement, like a sofa and angled chair combination, for example. Or, like my office chair, a reading nook corner. The "rule" would be, don't obstruct a pathway with angled furniture. Hope this is helpful? :)

      Thanks so much for your comment. Small rooms are tricky, right? Trundle beds are great. Have you considered a loft bed? Sometimes using as much of the vertical space in small rooms is the best option. And, awkwardly placed windows are challenging for sure. Is there a way you can use the window to help you distinguish zones? For example, one side of the window for bed, the other side for play zone?

    • @MichaelHelwig
      @MichaelHelwig 11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the comment. I'm a home "diy-er" when it comes to wiring light fixtures. The most important step, turn off your power to the fixture you want to change. That said, it's pretty easy to do: black wires on the fixture go to black wires in the ceiling, white wires in the fixture goto white wires in the ceiling. Copper attaches to the copper wire in the ceiling or to the mounting plate if no bare copper in the ceiling. It's not difficult, but if you're not comfortable switching it out, you should absolutely get help from someone that has the knowledge. Better to be safe than sorry.

    Sometimes you can get a flat photo of a rug to skew closer to the perspective of your inspiration photo in PowerPoint. From the Picture Format menu, go to Picture Effects and then 3-D rotation. This can also be good for skewing artwork to look more like it's hanging on a perpendicular wall. E.g., for your hall rug and that photo, choosing the "Perspective Relaxed Moderately" preset and then going back into the menu and selecting "3-D Rotation Options" and adjusting it to 290 degrees on the Y rotation and 75 degrees on the Perspective is pretty close!

    With the third option, would a king sized bed fit in there? I’m moving into a unit that’s similar to that lay out but it’s 9x12

      @MichaelHelwig Год назад

      Hi jameelamorris2543, a king size bed might be a tight fit for a room this size. I would recommend not having a large bed frame, something with a modest, slim headboard. Maybe no footboard... You want to keep the frame as minimal as possible in order to fit a king. Also, perhaps incorporate the storage you would usually have with bedside tables into a headboard. I'm interested in hearing what you decide to do. Please post here with updates. :)

    This video was extremely helpful! 💛You not only provided options, but you gave us measurements, visuals, and explanations as to the why behind it. You are amazing! We are currently downsizing and moving from a custom built home to a builder home. Our secondary bedrooms are 10x11. I wasn't sure I could get a queen size bed to fit. There is a window on the same side the closet door opens as well, which is a design flaw in my opinion.😞 It's going to be an adjustment for sure. Thank you so much for sharing your professional guidance and expertise!🌟🙏

    Thank you for featuring small spaces. My challenge is that, our room is small and there’s really no space for built in storage because there are vents (and air intake) on the walls, and ductwork (bulkhead) on the ceiling. Now I’m in a dilemma. We really need storage but having the challenges that the room has, I’m stuck. Any tips on how to design around vents (so as not to cover them) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

      Thanks so much for reaching out. You must be reading my mind because I'm actually covering this in a video/blog coming up soon. If you need built-in storage You'll have t bite the bullet and build it. I know you mentioned that you have vents and ductwork, but if there's a will there's a way. In the past, I've installed MANY cabinets over floor vents. You can get duct extenders at the big box hardware stores. They're available in many different sizes, angles, shapes, and more. They're made of aluminum and can be connected to one another with duct tape. This will help you create a channel for your heating and AC to run through. You'll need t modify the cabinetry that you place in front of or on top of the HVAC channels so that the new vent channel that you'll make with the extenders will work to move the air. You'll then cover the new duct channel with a decorative plate or grate, also easy to find, to finish the exterior. As I mentioned, I've done this exact "hack" many times over the years and it's been a success each time. Stay tuned for the post that I do on this exact topic, and good luck on this project! Remember, there's always a way to modify cabinets. A little creative thinking and some ductwork goes along way :)

    Nice video!! We are interested in building a house, but don't want to make it too large. We can't decide on the layout of a first-floor guest bedroom. The layout of the room will be predicated upon the location of the closet. If we place the closet on the rear wall the room will be 10 ft (wide) x 12.1ft (depth), if we place the closet on the side wall it will be 12.4ft (wide) x 9.7ft (depth). Which of these might be best for placing a queen size bed? The closet will only be 4 feet wide.

    • @MichaelHelwig
      @MichaelHelwig Год назад

      Hi Terence, My initial thought is go with a smaller closet if it's a guest bedroom. Although storage in small homes is always something to think about, if the primary function of the room is to be a place for infrequent guests, you won't need a larger closet. To add to that, will you actually need a 12' long closet at all? Perhaps re-thinking the amount of storage you need - inside the room- will be a better way to go. So, would you benefit more from using the space saved for another purpose such as chest of drawers storage, a desk, a vanity or a comfortable chair to sit in, instead of a big closet. (Forgive my presumptiveness, I'm thinking alternative use....) That said, in a small spare bedroom, comparable in size to the video bedroom - 9' x 10', a queen size bed will fit with some adjustments. You will not be able to fit large nightstands or bedside tables. Large dressers that are deep will also be a challenge. My advice is to consider how you will use the room every day. If it must serve multiple functions: guest room, spare room office, crafting space, etc. I would opt for a small closet. Dedicated guest room, I'd still opt for a "smaller" closet to get the most floorspace inside the room.
