An Antiques Roadshow expert reveals how to tell pottery from porcelain with this clever trick
Thanks, nice said. A bad day does not define me.
It's interesting to note that early 18th century Böttger ware pieces could also bear heavy black glaze or black lacquer decoration. There was a development in Yixing stonewares that involved reduction firing to produce a black body as well, though I'm uncertain as to the antiquity of this practice.
I usually inspect the foot, and then compare the density. Porcelain is closer to glass than to other ceramics - to the point where the soft-paste porcelain tradition was born by attempting to use crushed glass (frit) in the ceramic recipe - and it should 'feel' that way when handling the piece, for lack of a better way to put it. The unglazed section of the foot should be tighter and denser than stone or earthenware, though in many cases the foot is glazed which disguises this nature.
I would love to see a segment dedicated to Staffordshire dog figures.
I bought a platter like the one that you showed in the video with little feets, it has a marking on the back that said "Lead MTS" , is it lead mounts? where would it usually be these "Lead mounts"? Are those little feets and the fancy patterns around the plate is made of lead ? and is it safe to use?
I hate this boat so much
you made the ting noise on the smaller ladle and then said the large ladle was the solid one... then made the thud with the smaller ladle. Am I mistaken?
Hi I am having a hard time figuring out the type of silverware my Grandma had, She unfortunately passed just before Christmas and it has been left to me to try and sell her silverware. She was Sardinian before moving to Australia so she got it as a wedding present before she left for Australia, the boxes it came it have Argento 800/1000 or 800/ 000 I can't tell because it is faded. There are makings on the back of the utensils but I cannot make out anything other the 800. How do I test or find out what exactly they are?
www.925-1000.com/index.html this website has almost every known mark. Hope it helps
I purchased a pierced silver serving platter today (looks antique). The only mark I see is “Silver” which is on the back. Does a hallmark that says “silver” mean it’s sterling?
I'm fascinated by the this pallazzo. It really stands out from a Grand Canal boat ride. For those interested on more interior views there's a very good video on Romolini Christie 's real state channel here on RUclips, dated around one year ago. You can see a lot of the building.
Ah so it’s not just …American decadence and high cholesterol 😂
Thanks
These videos convey great information! Thank you!
Thank you
Thx Steve for the chocolate 🍫 history, I was looking into getting good chocolate 🍫 not from the bar, instead original form in organic cacao , add to coffee and a bit of manuka honey or coconut 🥥 sugar yummo too.. umm yummo mocha, lol now I want a coconut mug😮😅 😊

How did you get in?
Thanks, Lion's are only for UK silver..what about other countries, please? Also, can you test silverplate and silver with a magnet, thanks.
Some of the lamps have a knob that twists. This allows it to be dimmable. What year are those?
Thankyou for the help…
Hopefully
I never tried tea with cream, but I really recommend coffee and cream combination it’s really good 😅

What a beautiful vase, thank you for the idea and inspiration!
Wonderful video, thank you for this knowledge that you so very kindly pass on to us ❤ What is the best way to clean silver plated items?
was sold today
Actually sold, or sold according to a newspaper? Lots of rumours but as of last week it was still for sale
Thank you for sharing your knowledge….and you are right, it is so worth it to eat from a plate with history than an “ikea” one…
What an interesting fact! …I never knew…thank you ❤
Thank you! I was looking for this info! Love your way of explaining things
Thank you Mr Moore for this very entertaining lesson on Staffordshire figures, you have made my Saturday!❤
Why don’t any of these videos start with the fact that silver for the last few hundred years has to be MARKED. Silver-plating is often marked as well. Get a lupe. If it has a mark buy it. If it does not and cannot do an acid test on it, don’t buy it. Everybody in the industry works this way.😂
I and I think the vast majority of people know about hallmarks. I’m sure you also know that hallmarks are often rubbed or hard to find. There’s always a place for knowledge
Keeping in mind that it's been a long time since I bought mine, but I _think_ I bought it before 1990 (my girlfriend who I met in 1990 confirms I had it before then). I don't recall it having glass, but I seem to recall it having the stick with red ball at the end. It could be that I'd seen the stick in photos before I bought it, and mine was from pre-1990 stock and did not have the stick. I've always assumed it did have the stick and I lost it, because it's just a tiny bit out of balance, and I have kept 2 large paper clips hanging at the end to compensate for the missing stick. I haven't used it for quite a few years because it developed a random flicker. I'm now finally going to take the base apart to see if it's a bad transformer, then try some electrical contact cleaner on the joints to see if I can clear up the problem.
Another option is to bypass the transformer completely and wire it for a 120V LED bulb. Could always reverse it later
@ I’m not running 110 through the arms.
One thing I’ve noticed since using it again (and the flicker continues even after cleaning the joints), is that one arm gets extremely hot near the end next to the head. It’s almost as if the metal itself is compromised and is causing a great deal of resistance. If I hold it near the center and torque it just a little, the flickering stops.
Well I didn’t find a piece as that but I did find a tea set that has beautiful tone to it as silver can have. Also not magnetic as well. But was hoping suggestions here to test further
That was amazing. What a lovely poem.
First
well isn't that gonna make it much much easier.....I've acquired a large collection and know nothing bout either....ty....I did subscrbe
I found a dish at a thrift store. Hallmarked 940 rogers canada 1881. Magnet wont stick to it. Got the silver polish cloth to it. Got black while polishing it up. What marks should i look for to figure out if it is plated.
Rogers made silver plate. Most Canadian silver is marked ‘Sterling’
@MrStevenMoore alright. Thanks for your time. It was hallmarked 940 so i thought i found a nice piece at the thrift shop. It was only $8 so i guess lesson learned.
Is the size of the head of Tizio 35, than the larger 50? Thank you
I have silverware marked with 2 dots and the company’s name international silver. Any info would be appreciated.
