EMPIRE MICA LIONFISH ROUNDUP 2016
For this dive I joined a small but elite group of divers in Panama City Florida. After battling through thousands of Bikers, and 5 hours of rough seas - we reached the wreck of the Empire Mica. Our mission on this remote and amazing wreck was to remove as many invasive lionfish as possible.
Through the valiant efforts of the divers - we were able to remove over 500 lionfish.

Video Renamed 3-26-17 ....Original name was confusing :( This is actually footage from summer 2013, but I hadn't had time to edit it. What an incredible dive! A giant bait ball engulfed the entire wreck - sometime blotting it out completely!

This is footage I captured on our last trip to a scientific set of reef modules. These fish were harvested to provide information on size, age, stomach contents, DNA profile, ect. We had about 80' of visability, and the water was 62 degrees.
Oriskany Reef Manta Rays

This is some footage I shot at the Oriskany Reef in August of 2010. I am continuing to update and move my videos from Vimeo....so here is another oldie...but goodie! The day I shot this - the water was full of what we commonly call "whale snot".....and was a little overcast to boot. Fortunately .....the reef was visited by some large creatures....and I more than made up for the less-than-perfec...

This is a video I shot and edited a few years ago. I am removing my videos from Vimeo....so I did some tweaking, and have posted it again here - better than ever! The Empire Mica is an historical and amazing dive. As you will notice - its LOADED with life!
CHEVRON REEF PENSAOLA FLORIDA

This is a reef off of Pensacola Florida. It is an old oil rig - donated by Chevron and turned into an artificial reef. Depth to the sand is around 125' and its covered with life from top to bottom. We had a good thermocline at around 90-100 feet and you can clearly see it in the video in a few spots.....everything goes out of focus for a few seconds. Very cool dive!

This is a video I made for the Emerald Coast Reef Association's 2013 Lionfish tournament. This was the video I entered in the "Lionfish Video" category. It chronicles some of the dive sites and types of reef that I dove during the tournament.
Lionfish Removal Pensacola Florida

One of my fellow divers shot this footage with his head mounted Gopro camera. While it is a bit unstable.....due to the mount...it is still pretty interesting to see him go after these invasive Lionfish. The total take for the dive team on this dive was 45 fish! .....and 150 fish for the boat for the day! I left the underwater portion of the video mostly uncut - as evidence to the number of fis...

This is footage from the Trysler grounds near Pensacola Florida. While searching for lobster, I happened upon a (friendly?) eel. Are eel kisses lucky?....well....I DID get a HUGE lobster at the end of the dive...so I guess they are!

This is some footage I shot of my first lionfish sighting in Pensacola (2010).....and from a couple dives I did last week to see how many I could kill in one day. Totals for day 1 were 37.....and totals for the second day were 51 killed.

While spearfising the Tug Heron off of Pensacola Florida, and shooting an amberjack - I was harrassed by two sharks for about 5 minutes. I left the main portion of the video UNCUT so as not to tamper with the timeline. Enjoy!

Not a transmission, it's called REDUCTION GEARS!
Would love to a ship sink from under the water line
That’s a good job. There’s hundreds of them, you got the lot round that structure. How long does it take for it to repopulate? If you go there the next week is it the same ?!
Wow! Awesome dive! Lots of big amberjacks!
Great photography! Love the soundtrack too. I dove it 1983 thru 1994. Has really collapsed, the spare prop was on the deck as a great subject with a diver next to it for scale. Found the binnacle lantern on the first 10 min of my first dive on her in '83. Was on the gunnel, wedged under a pipe put there when they blew the superstructure in 1964.
I can't get enough of this invasive species. It's really satisfying to watch.
bums me out... but I know it has to be done.
This is the cause of Sea Rise!
I peed off the poop deck
Is it second world war wreak???
Thanks, this is a great video.
Nice porn music
I have one of the name boards off of her.
Oh really?? That’s funny. I have one. And I personally know the person who owns the starboard side board. So, your a liar…
I hate to see an unintended sinking. But reefing a retired vessel that almost immediately attracts life... I just love these videos.
Buena pesca hermano 👍 esos tiburones son oceánicos ? Saludos desde República Dominicana 🇩🇴👍🐟🦈🐬🐟
1:47 : ✈ = good sign 🛳 = bad sign
Nice job, i've never understood the animosity from the free-diving community. You'd think the gripe would be with charter boats/ commercial fishing ect.
Leave no lionfish alive
how funny would it have been to have a scuba diver sitting on the shitter with a camera and riding it to the bottom.
True
I dove her back in the '80s with Laney Rinehart who took the prop off her. She sure was in better shape then.
My grandfathers brother died onboard the empire mica hope I can dive it one day looks amazing!
Same as mine
Michael Hickman really he was from Bristol what about yours ?
Lionfish taste amazing!
I Captained this vessel for 6 years, she was a beauty, sad to see her go, I hope to get to dive the site someday....

Those views from inside the sinking ship would not be a good thing to see in person!
I'm pissed that they didn't make the USS Oriskany a museum. I served aboard from 71 to 74 and I live in Western New York near the Battle of Oriskany Battleground. It would have seen more fitting to restore the Oriskany an anchor it in New York Harbor take the USS Intrepid and Scuttle that in the Gulf of Mexico. Rotten bastards.
Beautiful video!
Nice work 😃
Good bye marine life. You americans better start to get used to eat Lion Fish, is the only fish you would eat in the next generations
that is hard to believe !!! they are taking over...kinda like Mexicans in California....
great video
Has anyone ever been caught who released them by any chance ?
..wow..so many..what do you do with that catch guys?? Everything goes to the kitchen??
do you guys go back to see if they've returned?
I observed from these videos down at 200 ft the terror fish are much bigger .
this lion fish terror fish has to be attack l Iike Navy SEAL operation . Assign sectors,of AOR . Assign teams to reconn grids for the terror lion fish and capture or destroy them .
How long do they figure this ship will last relatively intact before the structure starts to collapse? It's already been reported that it was shifted some distance from the original resting spot during one of the last big hurricanes that hit the area. Even before they sank it, it had been sitting rusting in dock for 3 decades. As far as her sister ships are concerned -- the ones that were preserved as museum ships --, my understanding is that TOPSIDE their hulls are in excellent shape. The one that was judged to be in "worst shape" actually came out fairly well even though the group that cares for that ship (USS Yorktown CV-10) was advised they still had to do some conservation work. Very, very expensive stuff which is why there are only 5 carriers preserved as museum ships...
Clean up gulf. These lionfishes do not belong there. As matter of fact, it doesn't belong to Atlantic ocean
What did you shoot this with
What's the music being played? Good job and looks like a fun dive.
2:41 dude needs some stronger barbs on his polespear. every lionfish just skips off his pole.
IT BOOP THE SNOOT
What do you do with them? I heard they're good to eat
Processed for research? Should have been processed for dinner!
Why do you hunt the Lion Fish? What are they doing i dont understand...
The Lionfish is an invasive species that eats many of the local species of fish. Outside of their natural range, they have very few predators so they're over populating many areas and threatening the native species of fish.
Awesome work
