Hi, I'm Spencer - an avid hiker, backpacker, camper and general lover of outdoors and travel. Seattle is home base but I also spend a fair amount of time in the other West Coast and Rocky Mountain West states. Some of my favorite destinations are alpine lakes, mountain peaks, waterfalls, slot canyons and slick rock adventures.
2024 started out strong for hiking, but took a sideways turn when I got Rhabdomyolysis while attempting Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon - it took me 3 months to get back to walking normally, and I'm still rebuilding strength, but happy to be back on the trail.
My goal is to share some of the beauty and adventures I get to experiences in nature, and hope you feel like you're along for the hike/ride/drive/adventures.
Most of my videos are done on my Samsung S24 Ultra. I also use a GoPro Hero 9, my Canon R6, and a DJI Mini 4 pro.
Thanks for joining me, and happy trails!
I also share lots of photos and short form videos on Instagram: @spence4prez

Sunrise Snowshoe Birthday Shenanigans - Artist Point, Mt. Baker, Huntoon Point and Mt Shuksan
An annual birthday tradition - start before dawn and get up to Artist Point for sunrise views of Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan. Bring champagne and orange juice and serve mimosas and drinks to friends - those who came with me, and those made on the spot.
The snowshoe up to Artist and Huntoon Points is well worth it. It's just about 2 miles from the parking lot at the Mt. Bake Ski Area/Heather Meadows. There are some steep spots, but it's one of those hikes where they payoff far outweighs the effort put in.
My buddy Michael joined me this year, and we took off at 6:22am on a balmy, ~40 degree day. We had the route to ourselves, and got up top before the sun crested Shuksan. We got amazing sunri...

Watson Falls Hike || North Umpqua River, Highway 138, Southern Oregon
Просмотров 5421 день назад
Watson Falls is a 0.8 mile hike to a 272 foot waterfall along the North Umpqua Highway, not far from Toketee Falls and Diamond Lake. It's a quick and easy hike with a gorgeous waterfall at the end. Whether you're driving through on your way to Crater Lake and need a quick stretch to get your blood flowing, or whether you're spending the day bagging as many waterfalls as possible along Oregon's ...

Day three of our epic Oregon road trip was packed with fun hikes, amazing views and vistas, wonderful waterfalls, and some of the best scenery Southern Oregon has to offer. Our stops included Crater Lake National Park, Toketee Falls, Umpqua Hot Springs, Diamond Lake, Steamboat Inn, Whitehorse falls and Clearwater Falls. In the morning, we headed up Highway 138, known as Oregon's "Waterfall High...

On day two of our Oregon Roadtrip, Ariane and I visited Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards (and Hillcrest, but I forgot to film). This is one of my favorite wineries in Oregon. Stephen and Gloria, the owners, are darn good people, and they make excellent, award winning wine. We tasted their "Heirloom Flight", a specialized tasting that features limited-release and older library wines. Ours included ...

Hiking Barclay Lake with my buddy and his dog | #hikingadventures #hiking #outdooradventure
Просмотров 26Месяц назад
Earlier this year I did an overnight adventure with my buddy PJ and his dog Major. We car camped and hiked up to Barclay Lake. The hike itself is 4.4 miles roundtrip with 500 feet of elevation gain, so not an "epic outdoor adventure" but it was my 2nd hike after getting back on my feet, and it was a challenge for me - but a beautiful and fun challenge. The area gets something like 150-200 inche...
Lake Valhalla - 4th time is the charm
Просмотров 432 месяца назад
It took me 4 tries to finally get to Lake Valhalla, and it was worth the effort. The first try was a winter snowshoe and we turned around because of conditions, try number two was cut short due to daylight (I had picked up four PCT through hikers and driven them to Leavenworth and got a late start) and try number 3 was cut short due to a migraine (too much fun). Thankfully, try number 4 was a s...
Chasing Larches at Blue Lake in the North Cascades
Просмотров 612 месяца назад
This hike punches well above it's weight. You get an alpine lake, larches, jagged North Cascade Peaks and pass lots of friendly dogs, all in a well graded 4.4 miles round trip trail that gains 1,050 feet of elevation as you hike to the lake. The hike is great any time of year. Be wary that it's particularly busy while the larches are changing, and the parking lot fills up very early, so plan ah...
Hidden Lake Lookout - A fantastic foggy fall hike
Просмотров 732 месяца назад
The hike to Hidden Lake Lookout has four distinct feels over the 4.25 miles up to the lookout. Starting in dense forest, the trail breaks out at the 1 mile mark and works its way up an open valley along a creek, full of alders and low ground cover. Higher up, you get to boulder fields and blueberries, then finally a scramble up boulders to the peak and lookout. I did it as a day hike, and found...

Didn't watch your entire video but watched enough of your actuals R2R2R video to get the gist of what was going on. There are two things that stand out: training & nutrition/hydration. It doesn't appear you were adequately trained or experienced enough to attempt a double crossing, especially considering you ended up with rhabdo after completing half the hike. On the nutrition/hydration front, did you train outdoors with the items you planned on using for nutrition and hydration? I'm talking about, at least, several all day training sessions outdoors with what you planned to use in the GC. I'm going off of the commentary where you mentioned going to REI in PHX to get advice on what to take and was that something you were trying to figure out on your way to the attempt. Don't know where you live, btw, as your vid just randomly hit my YT feed but looks like it may in the PNW based on the vids you post. The REI comment was just a red flag for me. I'm 181 lbs and target 300 calories/hr and consume every 20 minutes to keep caloric levels, more or less, consistent (definitely wouldn't take 300 at once as it's difficult for the body to manage that properly in one hit). BTW, I would be using easily digestible "foods". Gels come to mind. If it was an easier physical effort, I would add some solids in (i.e. bars) but still lean towards gels. I'm familiar with hydration challenges as I'm a heavy sweater. Not a fan of bladders as it's really difficult to accurately monitor fluid consumption during these types of extended efforts and the need to balance electrolyte consumption with ounces of fluid consumed per hour. I would be consuming 20 to 40oz of fluids/hr, depending on the temps. Hopefully, some of this general info is helpful. Selfishly, I would like to see others avoid similar outcomes as the popularity of doing R2R2R is high and not taken with the proper preparation. This often results in those that do these types of things, myself included, to get the side-eye from rangers and seen as reckless without knowing our outdoor experience/backgrounds. I did R2R2R when I was 48 (I'm way older now) with my wife: Bright Angel TH out and back to the North Rim in 13 hours. I was knackered when I got to the NR TH because I had stupidly only eaten 3 gels but the trip back was way better as I kept on top of calories and hydration, so it can happen to anyone. That was in the month of October when water was still available at Cottonwood and Supai tunnel (btw, since the pipe from the north rim is now out of service, I would, personally, never attempt a R2R2R until they repair/replace it).
Did R3 nearly 15 yrs ago.. took close to 23 hours. Ran out of electrolytes on the final ascent but fortunately another hiker (we had 3) had a bit of Gatorade left and so was able to finish. Would you do the hike solo again? I probably wouldn’t myself.. too many things could go wrong outside of my control.
Where were they headed?
You’re the goat! Er… you saw the goat, same difference!
Nice winter hike. Lovely scenery 😊wishing you a Happy New Year 😊
Love the drone footage! What a morning and a perfect way to celebrate. Happy birthday! I may have wheezed and had a bit of an asthma attack just watching you climb.
Thank you! It was pretty fun using the drone this time around. I felt like I had my own personal camera crew following me. I find no matter what shape I'm in, I always take hills just a bit faster than I should, and wind up out of breath.
What's all of that white stuff? PS - Happy birthday!
@@trailvoyant don't you have a ton of it down in Tucson...oh, wait... that's sand I'm thinking of. And, thank you 😊
Snow covered N Cascades on the perfect morning for a snow shoe trek. Nice drone coverage, too.
I couldn't have asked for a better day for this. So much beauty, and fun to capture it with the drone. Still doesn't capture it!
very beautiful and interesting. I really enjoyed this stunning video.

Spectacular perspective of an Oregon treasure.

One of the most beautiful scenic highways in the Pacific Northwest!
@normsmith1753 I concur. So many beautiful views from the road itself, and so many more when you stop to explore.
Stunning!
@Dirtbag.G thanks amigo! Some of my favorite country! I was blessed to grow up with this as my "backyard".
Looks like a beautiful place!
It's one of my favorite spots to visit other than the hiking trails when I'm back in my home town. Right now the leaves are all changing :)
glad your recovering & will be able to continue hiking!! You have to look back at where you were what you did huge accomplishment!!!
@jackiegannon9179 thank you! I feel very lucky to have walked out and to be recovering. Now it's just training and conditioning, but not overdoing it! You're so right. I get caught up wanting to be in the same shape sometimes, as opposed to seeing how far I've come, and what I was able to accomplish. Happy trails to you! Thanks for tunning in and for your supportive message :)
Thanks for the video and the tips. I read from an experienced hiker to help with training for hiking downhill is to use an elliptical by going backwards. You are using different muscles. It was super helpful since I live where we don't have mountains. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park near us is great with some large hills but nothing like out west.
@rickskidmore3075 thanks for watching and the good advice. It's rainy season again here, so sounds like i need to jump on an elliptical! (And also add lunges and squats). Happy hiking and training to you!
Awesome trip!
@Dirtbag.G thanks amigo!
This hike looks and feels amazing my friend!
@@ervinslens thank you, my friend! It was a great day and a good start to a week long road trip!
What an awesome trip. I can’t believe you managed to hit so many sites in 1 day!
@northwestwalking we packed it in, for sure! Ended up doing 1,500 miles in 8 days. So much beauty to see and we didn't want to miss anything (even though there was a ton we didn't get to).
What a lovely scenery man, these shots are absolutely amazing!
@ervinslens thank you! Such a beautiful hike, was hard to not get good shots!
Beautiful hike, a ‘peak’ adventure indeed!
@@northwestwalking maybe one for one of your Northwest Walks?
I just did south kaibab trail to phantom ranch yesterday. Took me 7 hours to do the round trip. It was awesome. But my only struggle was coming back at the last mile my legs were starting to cramp up. I stopped foe a bit and rested and made it back fine. I definitely want to do it again it was great challenge. I stayed at grand canyon plaza. Pretty decent place and great experience.
@@davidsteiner7848 congrats on your hike! I've never gone up South Kaibab - props on the extra elevation! And, thanks for the intel on the Grand Canyon Plaza. I hope you get to do it again soon! Maybe I'll see you on the trail :)
It doesn’t get much prettier than autumn in the PNW!
So true!
What a great hike! You’ve added yet another hike to my spring bucket list
It's a good one. Some good camping options, too, of you want to turn it into an overnight. Something tells me your Outin camping espresso setup would be perfect up by the lake!
Early hikes are the BEST! Also you crushed this one!
Thanks, Meg!!!
So beautiful! I'd be tempted to jump in after 1,400 feet of climbing, even if it wasn't all that warm. Is swimming allowed?
I like your style. Past seasons I'd jump in regardless of temperature, but this year it's been a stay ashore. You can definitely swim there. And that sounds idea on a warmer day!
I've never been so early before haha! What a beautiful hike. Congrats on getting this one done!
Thanks April!
Great hike looks well worth it, great job my friend 😊👍👍
Thank you!
This trail was unbelievably beautiful!! Disappointed we didn't getting a crashing meteorite, but gorgeous nonetheless 😋
I'll work on the meteorites and exciting reasons to keep filming in the dark ;)
TIL what a larch is...thanks!
@@trailvoyant I always feel like there should be a Dr. Seuss book about larches. Especially as hiking for larches is called a Larch March.
@@AdventuresWithSpencer thanks to ChatGPT... In the Northwest, it’s fall, and it’s time to embark, On a larch march through forests where colors grow stark. Past ferns and past pines, where the trails twist and bend, And the larch trees stand golden, like flames at the end. With a hop and a skip, and a scrunch-crunchy tramp, You hike up the hill through the fog and the damp. Larches on ledges, and larches that lean, Their needles are golden, their trunks dark and green. It’s a crisp crackle-snap as the autumn leaves fall, And the mountains light up like a big golden hall! So tramp through the trees, go stomp-stomp your feet, For in the land of the larch, every leaf is a treat. March up, up the mountain, and breathe in the chill, The air’s crisp and cool as you hike up the hill. Oh, the magic of larches that sparkle and sway, In a glimmer of gold on a mist-covered day! So lace up your boots, take a step, take a start, For the best time of year is the gold-larch march!
@@trailvoyant okay. You win!!!

Gorgeous opening shot my friend! Outstanding panoramic views on this trail!
Thank you! I've been experimenting with how to work in (and film) drone shots while on the trail. Hope to incorporate more along the way, though once higher on the trail, I was getting the bird's eye/drone's eye view from the ground :)
Beautiful hike! Definitely one for the PNW bucket list
It was a real treat. I'd never been up to that park of the mountains, and I'll have to go back again with more time!
Beautiful! The colors as you were descending were so lovely…
Fall up there is just stunning. And the hike made me feel like I earned it and enjoyed them even more :)
I have done an R2R2R. It took me 15 hrs to go the 42 miles. I went down and up S Kaibab. I stayed away from Bright Angel. Some input.....150-200 calories/ hr. 20-24 oz of water with electrolyte tab dropped in. It's very easy to drop an electrolyte tab into a water bladder! Just fill with water and drop the tab in. An extra bottle just for electrolyte water is wasted weight. There is water available on the trail approx every 7 miles. No need to carry more than 2 liters. Carry calorically dense food. Sugar based burns too quickly. Get the best bang for the buck by using high calorie, high fat stuff, like nuts, nut butters, some cookies that are high in fat content. Avoid gels as they supply only a very quick burst of energy from the sugar hit then they are gone. Carbs only have 4 cal/gram. Fat gas 9 cal/ gram. Sugar is like burning newspaper. Fat is like burning an oak log. Also, very critical... protein must be consumed! 5 to 10 grams/hr. This is key. Easy to use foods that are high in cal/oz, have good fat content, and have protein. Thank you for your video.
Congrats on our R2R2R and thanks for your thoughts and tips. On the water front, the pipeline was out, so there was not reliable water. I consume more water than the average person, so 3 liters was a necessity for me (and I like having my electrolytes separate from my main water bladder). Always good to hear what works for others, both so I can fine tune my approaches, and for those reading this who may have different needs/styles than how I choose to hike. Happy happy trails to you!
Absolutely gorgeous work my friend! This looks great!
Thank you! Happy trails to you!
Rim to rim running and single day to rim hiking is ruining the corridor in Grand Canyon. It taxes the infrastructure beyond its capacity and is incredibly negatively impactful.
@matador483 can you say more? The only infrastructure used on a single day is water and outhouses. Seems to have less impact than overnights?
Guessing the creature at 6:40 is a Pika? TIL a new verb..."meeping." Thanks! Road didn't look too bad. Do you think you need a high clearance vehicle to get to the trailhead?
@trailvoyant you are correct - that's a pika. Road in was in great shape, could do it in any vehicle.
Always making me add hikes to my list I see! That glacier is awesome.
@megintheforestoutdoors I've been daydreaming about that ascent to the peak for a couple years. Come out and let's climb it! There's some good traverses to nearby peaks, too.
