Before you visit Itasca State Park watch this!
Peter, your slideshow brought back so many happy memories! Our summer home is on Leech Lake and we had fun visiting Itasca State Park when I was growing up and my kids were growing up. Also, your mom and my mom were good friends growing up. My mom is Betty Herbison Ritter. She passed away about 11 years ago. I also remember you hanging out with my cousins, Roger and Greg Larson. I remember my cousins staying at Timberlane resort and all of us kids were playing on a merry-go-round, eating watermelon and having a seed spitting contest and you came over to visit too. I think your mom was over to visit my mom and my Aunt Noni Rogers Larson. Memories of summers at the lake are the best! ❤️ Roger and Greg always talked about your photography and how beautiful it was. I’m glad I found your channel!
Susan, Great to hear from you I hope all is well with you and yours. I have very fond memories from Walker and summertime parties that took place. I just spoke wit Roger last week he was at Gregs and is planning on moving to Park Rapids soon. We try to get back every summer if we can, this years will be a shorter trip and next years will be longer. If I wrote the stories about the adventures I had with Roger and sometimes Greg It would be volumes. I do miss being out on Leech but I'll take an Arizona winter over a Minnesota winter any day. Thanks agin for you note and take care. - Peter
Great video. This is such a magnificent spot to visit. When one sees the beginning of the massive Mississippi River, it's just mind-blowing. Do you live in Minnesota? And your choice of music is spot on!
Thank you for your kind words. We used to live thirty minutes from the headwaters parking lot in Walker, MN. I listen to a bunch of music when I'm putting these videos together and always try to find something soothing and uplifting without vocals if possible. Thanks again.
I forgot to add the link to Time at the lake by William Albert Allard so here it is amzn.to/4boXjAg

Beautiful photos and wonderful choice of music to accompany the pictures. Thank you, I enjoyed it!
Reatha, Thank you so much!
Wow Absolutely beautiful I have never had the opportunity to visit Minnesota. Your you’re portography is absolutely stunning .Bravo 👏
Susan, Thank you so much for your kind words; they mean to me. If you ever have the chance to visit Minnesota I would recommend the Fall season as there ar few bugs and the kids are back in school. It has always been my goal to place the viewer in my shoes at the moment I made the exposure. So my prefered time to photograph from just before the first morning light until about 1 1/2 hours after Sunrise. Then from about 2 hours before sunset until just after the last light of the day. I am lucky to be able to see and photograph subjects that many folks never get the chance to see. Therefore, I am responsible for showing Mother Nature's handy work to everyone. I can be of any help; just let me know. Thank you again!
@@phawkinsphoto When looking at your photos I put myself into it as if I am actually there ,it can be very relaxing, your photos are so beautiful.

Great video Peter! What a monster of a ship! What an amazing experience that must be to see that come through! Great images at the end, especially the one at sunset at 3:14...beautiful! Really enjoyed it!
Paul, Thank you for watching. Having lived 2 hours from Duluth for more than 20 years and another 8 + Summers in Duluth have provided a lot of time to photograph this monster of a ship. Years ago, I Photographed another ship that was the last to arrive in Duluth on a morning when the temp was -35f degrees It is the Roger Blough here's a link to that image www.phawkinsphoto.com/store/art_print_products/dp82-home-at-last-black-and-white?product_gallery=23770&product_id=1455828. Stay safe this week and great image making always.

Paula, Thank you!
Beautiful photos! I love when you post a new video here. I can't wait to see what you have captured and are sharing with us.
Brenda Thank you so much for your kind words!
Beautiful. Black and white is far more difficult to shoot than colour. What type of camera did you use? I had my old Minolta SRT 202 recently restored.
Wayno, I have used a wide variety of cameras over the years. They include Sinar P2 4X5, Hasselblad, and multiple Nikon bodys. While I was training in college we first had to master B&W Photography. One way we did this was by using the worst and cheapest paper on the market first, then and only then did we get the chance on quality paper.
Can you send me price list on lighthouse pics. Thanks
Kenny, Go to www.phawkinsphoto.com/lighthouses click on the image you are interested in, and choose Medium, Size & Style and the prices will show on the screen. Let m know if I can help you any further.

Stunning. Truly a beautiful experience.
Thank you so much!
Every one of them a masterpiece! How did you get the pasta to be in black and white, but the tomato in colour? It's a fascinating photo no matter what the technique was. If I ever come into money, I'll buy that Loon. The ripe fruits on the prickly pear make me hungry for prickly pear jelly. The rest the succulent makes me want a cactus pad salad for lunch, or one of the cactus pad dishes I had in Mexico. How did you get the shot of the ship? Were you using a drone, or? It's really cool to see what you've done over 37 years, and it's also good to see that you'ld really matured as a photographer really early on. Or maybe it is just that you were kind of a savant in photography. The eye seems to have been there from the start.
Tomato & Pasta It was sometime in 1982 and I was well into my first year at Brooks Institute. We had been using 4X5 cameras for only a short time. That week's assignment was to create a product shot without brand names, or something like that. Honestly, I do not remember what the assignment was. Anyway, I have been a fan of Edward Weston long before I ever got to Santa Barbara. Particularly of his peppers in black and white. At the time, I could try to emulate his work without copying it. I still like this image, but I don't see the Weston feel I thought I did back then. As was practice with the 4X5, I always exposed two sheets of b&w and two of color E-6 film. Over the years, I have had some of my old film images scanned at high resolution, this is one of those early images. With the scans back I started working on a Photoshop technique I refer to as touch of color. And that is how this image came to be. The ship was in Duluth Minnesota's Ship Canal and I was on the Aerial Lift Bridge, It took a lot of time & special permission to be able to ride the bridge. Thank you so much! Peter
You have captured many amazing images. Beautiful scenery! Also loved the beautiful colors in the sky!
Thank you Charles hope all is well.
i really enjoyed watching. having been to the headwaters of Mississippi i especially enjoyed that. curious, was that the split rock light house? Also enjoyed the loon pictures. took me many years before I ever got to see a real one.
It is a Splitrock Lighthouse. Thank you!

This is the heart of the Minnesots logging industry with such amazing logging scenes. Where's the logging photos?
Richard Moe, You're correct about the logging, Mary Gibbs fought the loggers to protect some of the old-growth forests like the tall pines along Wilderness Drive or Preacher's Grove. This whole piece is comprised of images that I have made over the last 30 years. I never intended this to be about the logging industry. The purpose is to give an introductory look into Itasca State Park. Thank you!
Always makes me homesick, the Loon calls are the cherry on top.
You got to love the call of the Loon. Thank you!
Thanks Peter! As always, good stuff.
Thank you!
The sunsets wonderful. I love the Lighthouse, and the music brought peace to my soul.
Myra Burch, Thank you so much. I glade you enjoy my work. 😀🤙🌵
