Personas difficulty isn't really an issue on lower difficulties, it's when it gets to the hardest difficulty where the game doesn't have a challenge or the challenge is make the game miserable to play (persona 4 golden very hard difficulty) it's a problem

One big problem with persona difficulty is the players have all options while the demons have barely the half, so they could fix this by making demons bat pass when they hit weakness, have use 8 slot abilities with diferent skills, and finally have piece skill to avoid player became Unstoppable because funny build yoshisune blocks everything + good physical attack. And about therugys they could make every character therugys have different effect besides the "nah i'd win" high damage attack like making yosuke increase evasion and critical hit and Morgana recovery hp and buff evasion, and the showtime stuff could be nerf by making them required two characters in Frontline and have full bar so you have to consider change the time because of showtime but not good for the dungeon or continue with good team but with not showtime great.

SMT isn't unpopular because of difficulty, but because of how much time you have to spend in making your character and their demons as strong as you can at the current moment to fight whatever is in your way

I definitely understand your point in regards to difficulty, and, while I don't necessarily agree, I can at least see where you're coming from when it comes to the calendar system, but I just can't agree with your point on the characters. For 5, sure, I can understand. While I like everyone in that game, I can't really say I'd be overly upset if Makoto was wiped from the game. For 4 though, while yes, Kanji and Yukiko aren't that important to the overall plot, getting rid of them would, imo, make the plot so much less enjoyable. I feel like Kanji especially helps the group as a whole feel more lively. On top of that, removing both of them would have bad implications for gameplay, as we're left with Chie as the only physical party member, and Teddie as the only dedicated healer, meaning we'd be left without a healer for 3 WHOLE DUNGEONS. For 3, I just cannot agree with your take. I like Ken, so I can say I would be upset if he were gone, but putting that aside, let's say we DO remove Ken. So Shinjiro just killed some random guy? Why should we care? The impact of the reveal isn't just that he accidentally killed someone, it's that he killed someone important to one of our other party members. Though while less impactful, I guess I could see it still working, but making Shinjiro just a social link? Nah. Given that your problem seems to be with character's screen time during the main plot, I'm assuming that would mean that all of Shinjiro's scenes that establish his relationship to Akihiko would be moved to Shinjiro's social link (given that's already what most of Shinjiro's scenes are in the first place) and that would mean that the protagonist would also be forced to be there during these interactions, which wouldn't give them any one-on-one time together. So if we just decided not to do the social link, or were completely unaware that it even had a time, then all we really know is that Shinjiro is, apparently, someone important to Akihiko, but if we don't see any scenes establishing that, it massively lessens the impact of Shinjiro's death and it's importance to Akihiko. Sure, we've been given more main story time to focus on Akihiko... but only after we've completely gutted his arc. And on a less important note, removing Ken also means we only have one dedicated healer the entire game.

I would agree on the point that some of the daily activities really become repetitive. Especially the social stats grinding options. Because at a certain point you just press "fast forward" because it is the same cutscene always. The best part about free time has always been to work on your social links and learn more about the characters. I think when it comes to the party members 3 and 4 did a fine job. They could have maybe changed tiny stuff but overall I am okay with how it is there. The problem in 5 is honestly just that each partymember becomes the hyperfocus during there own dungeon just to get pushed to the side once the dungeon is over just to make space for the next character which becomes the hyperfocus.

Because the social link and slice of life stuff is way more fun than the combat and dungeon stuff. Nobody plays persona for Tartarus and the palaces.

“Spamming Dekaja” Aka that damn boss from 4 Apocalypse who always starts every turn with this move. If it wasn’t for that “corrosion” skill that cut off a press turn I would’ve struggled there.

tldr: If my parents saw 4 teenagers beating up Baphomet and Belphegor, they'd cheer me on. If my parents saw those same demons on MY side fighting against angels...they'd be worried. SMT has a lot of overt religious commentary across multiple religions, a grimdark setting, and dives headfirst into morality and hard choices where there oftentimes isn't a clear "good guy" choice to make. And SMT fans like it like that. Just look at how many of us cringed when SMT4 Apocalypse actually had the option of a golden ending with no direct or implied downsides, making the moral nuances of Law and Chaos completely pointless. Conversely, Persona is much more of a traditional RPG with it's world and it's setting. A bunch of ragtag young heroes band together to save the world (from itself most of the time), grow and mature as people, and learn valuable life lessons along the way. It's the Hero's Journey, it's tried and true, and it's easily digestable. This doesn't mean that Persona is junk food while SMT is a buffet, nor does it mean that SMT is Hot Topic levels of edge while Persona is sterilized. Both franchises have questioned human nature and it's relationship to gods. Both franchises show the dangers that one human can cause if they gain godlike power. Both franchises tackle serious subjects like death, fate, and our place in the world. The only real difference between the two, is the delivery. And some people like one package more than the other.

Actually the biggest spin off series from this franchise is now One Piece (SMT, and Persona are popular, but not as much as One Piece), since the author really liked the original novel Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei trilogy. You can read One Piece chapter 1138 for the proves. We have characters here like Loki, Cerberus, Nakajima, and Yumeko. Even the legendary Laugh Tale might turn out to be post apocalyptic Tokyo.😂

I think it comes down to story. SMT just kind of drops you into big landscapes and has you explore. Persona has like 40 hours of story content.

A High-School Life-Sim with some Dungeon crawling in P3 is very new at that time. A mix of 2 different genre made the game enjoyable, and not tedious like SMT, P1, P2.
