I think that's most people's problem with Rob Liefeld, he can't finish a consistent story and keeps making team books that nobody cares about. He should have just stuck to Youngblood.

I haven't reread them all in a while but from memory Larsen went out of his way to acknowledge events from the Jim Lee issue in his own 13A and not contradict it, so that it remained in-continuity, while also being optional. Also of note on the art here - while Lee is credited with pencils, the inkers are actually called "Finishers" - I always took that to mean the pencils from Lee were pretty loose and light on detail...

This is why Erik Larsen boasting about beating Cerebrus is bogus. He did 12 issues from debut to new artist/creative team. Cerebus LEGITIMATELY did hundreds.

i really want the Graphite Editions of Captain Victory and Silver Star. so many great Kirby books in the haul. i remember when i was a kid seeing artist sig with "after" whoever they were doing an homage to and not knowing wtf it meant.

Sich a wasted opportunity. This was just a wildstorm comic with dragon sorta guest starring. Would have been so much more interesting if Larsen wrote a story that jim lee drew

I don’t mind the ufoes, for hulk villains they’re okay, I think their best designs were in avengers earth’s mightiest heroes.

Those opening pages aren’t in the regular issue. The fight with mighty man and whoever that villain is. That’s some additional stuff for that trade I’ve never seen

i think what might've caused Keown to make some of the choices he did concerning the left to right stuff was the size of the weapon in his right hand, and it makes sense for him to carry the larger weapon in the right hand but if he went left to right in that panel all you'd see is the weapon and most of Hulk would be out of sight behind it. thanks for doing these vids, really enjoying these and the Savage Dragon vids. i got a hold of some Keown Samurai and Dragonring/force comics as a kid in the 80's and been a big fan since.

I don't think they tried to sue Rob Liefeld because of the name of the city from The Flintstones, I think they tried to sue him because they didn't want the name associated with Rob's comic. It definitely ain't a kid-friendly book 😄

I read and looked at this comic probably more than any other in my life. Had it as a kid and would always just randomly pull it out and check it out. The death of Superman TPB was one i'd do same.

I bought one of the early issues of Youngblood but it just wasn't my thing and I never bought another. I wasn't into the whole Image thing, and I think I stopped buying comics altogether almost at this time (like 1990 onwards).

I think Trevor Scott was doing Stormwatch. And I remember Alex Garner inking Gen 13. I have to go check to confirm Trevor on Gen 13 over J Scott Campbell. You may be right but I don’t remember that as clearly.

I'm still so stoked the XForce movie (deadpool 2) was way better a teamup movie than any of the avengers films (Age of ultron came pretty close to being good though for an actual Avengers movie as a long time fan of the comics as a kid

That final Liefeld cover is inked by "Paul Scott" - which is just a pen name that Rob used. In this issue, the vague credits always said to me that Rob provided layouts at most - this is largely not his artwork.

I got that issue.

For me Todd was as close to Kirby as we have ever seen. The iconic covers, the dynamic shots everything. They also both had anatomy and face issues but it was so cool looking we don't care. Fun fact the founder's had Kirby's blessings to start Image according to jim Valentino. Todd actually wanted to each comic to say Jack Kirby presents but Valentino said he's not asking him for that.

Oh, with the latter part of the issue apart from deadlines and saving time by blacking out most of the characters and backgrounds I always assumed it was Rob buttering people up for the Mignola fill-in next issue.

Interesting that you compared Capullo with Silvestri as I noted early on (when Cap was on X-Force) that his mastery of anatomy and his framing of storytelling reminded me a lot of Silvestri as well.

I like Marc Silverstri's characters a lot better than Jim Lee's. Cyber Force had a better aesthetic than Wildcats. Let's be honest, some of the Wildcats looked stupid and had dumb powers. Warblade with his dumb costume and Maul got dumber as he got bigger. I mean some of the Cyber Force members were generic too but they were well written.

Like your work, man. I haven't seen many people point out the weird Xs on some of this issue's inks before - it doesn't stick around but I never suspected this wasn't pretty much all Rob trying something new. Nicieza from memory is pronounced "nih-see-ay-zah", and the colourist is "Boo-chell-ah-tow".

I had this issue back in the day but most of my comics got stolen from my friend's storage when I lived in AZ (long story). I'm thinking about getting the re-prints when I get some money 🤑

I was reading the Peter David and Jeff Purves Incredible Hulk in the 80's. It was not my favorite Marvel Comic book at the time. But then Dale Keown took over on art duties, and Incredible Hulk became my favorite Marvel comic book at that moment.
