Let me think for a moment, I have no idea how to work with blender so I'm only writing my assumption on how this was made. Assuming this was made by hand, checking all these numbers with the picture might take a few months, probably years. Take a pixel board, and paint each frame, probably possible to do this with Photoshop much faster by editing the original into a pixelated version of itself, writing in the numbers on the border pixels, and then covering it with the minesweeper PNGs. A lot of work, in short. A way to possibly lower the length of work is to set up some kind of program that can take a grid of pixels and set the numbers on the borders, which can save a lot of time but requires programming skills as well as editing. The program itself can start by writing 1 on each corner, putting the bombs in the most logical positions, then writing the numbers around them, finding empty spaces, putting bombs in a random position, updating the numbers, and repeating the last two steps until no empty spaces are present. But in any case, be it doing it by hand or writing a program, in combination with the rest of the work, this is just incredible. Edit: There is also a possibility to set up a program that plays Minesweeper until it looks similar for each frame, but I doubt this is how it was done because the rendering of this can take a lot more than a few years considering all the possible positions of the game.

You can actually calculate the volume of this solid with a simple albeit tedious method. First, count the black pixels in each frame of the original video and calculate the length of the general volume that each frame represents in the full solid. Then, you can take the area of each frame and multiply it by the length of the solid it represents, and then add up all of these to get a general estimate of the volume.
