@@Rockonbusa Why would they do that?! Never try to start an engine without the timing chain tensioner installed! That could have caused a major issue with the engine, it might have lost timing and could have damaged the internals. I'd suggest taking it to a mechanic to check, but if you don't want to do that you could try fitting the new tensioner and see what happens. The first version of this used to be serviceable with a rubber o ring and tabs to click into place, They switched to just welding into place to save money I guess during manufacture. Must have been cheaper to weld than a 3cent o ring. This method doesn't always work and you end up replacing the valve cover any way. Best to do it with valve cover off using a heat gun to gently break the weld, clean thoroughly and find an o ring that fits and reinstall new one as intended. I used to do this as a mail in service when valve covers were well over $1K but they have dropped so much its now affordable to replace entire assembly. Do this when you replace the valve cover gasket. Not a difficult job, average person can do it in a few hours with lots of preparation and watching how to vids before getting into it.

@HeroRepairs too bad, I am thinking that there would be a big difference in term of tension when new vs slightly failing but still within tension specification vs failed tensioner. By the time the chain rattled it could have failed its tension specification for already 30,000 to 50,000 km and had damages done to the timing chain system - like having more tear and wear than it should be. 🤔 Good if anyone else could do a tension test of a new vs an old tensioner. @@whlawson5812 yes it would be interesting to test it, but the fact that BMW released multiple revisions to the part is all I need to know. On my 2011 Legacy, the usual 3 warning lights are on and the error code is for a glow plug. P1380 I can erase the code using my obdii reader and then I'm good for as many starts that day as I need so long as engine remains warm. If engine goes cold or I don't start car until next day, then the 3 orange lights come back on. Car has 275,000km on clock. I think glow plugs were changed before - not sure. If this were a glow plug issue then wouldn't the warning lights come on every time I start the car? The fuse linked to the glow plugs is fine. Might I have an electrical issue rather than a glow plug issue? The plugs probably do need changing but even the local dealer told me - if I can live with the warning lights then that's best. The car always starts fine even in the cold. DPF has been removed. Any advices / comments appreciated

I no longer have access to the repair manuals to confirm but this stuff is usually reversed depending on LHD or RHD. This video shows a RHD vehicle, so it's a reasonable assumption that it will be flipped on a LHD variant. Yes simply connect 12v to the + - prongs, you'll see which way is the correct polarity when you remove the plug.
