What you’ll see when you follow along with us? Projects we are working on, and products we used to complete them.
You will also see boat tours of all kinds and sizes, along the way. We won't just show you the shiny new boats at boat shows but also the boats people are using every day and passionate about. This is where Carl's big passion is, so get ready for a lot of tours in the future as we grow our channel.
A question we get a lot is, “how could you switch from sail to power”? Honestly, we had a choice to make about room and family needs. Currently, our need for outside room outweighed our desire to be under the winds power. Do we have a plan to fix that? You bet, and we plan to switch back down in the future and continue our journey using mother earths power. We decided what we learn doing DIY projects on MVBabaYaga will transfer back over to the sail world on many platforms.
We are just a guy, a girl, a boat, and a camera.
Life is calling!

SALON REFIT Part 1 Californian LRC The beginning of a total refit and custom settee build.
Join us on the journey of taking a completely perfect and beautiful salon on our Californian LRC and tear it apart, sanding, rebuilding, and re-varnishing. It is a ton of work and we are doing it all ourselves. Watch as we remove cabinets, counters, and sinks, only to rebuild it all the way we want it. (spoiler alert) We also change the pine colored mahogany back to its true red glory. This is not a DIY build but rather how we are tackling this huge undertaking. Watch as we do things right and wrong on the way.

When there are bubbles, Is that okay to not to sand it down? Would the air bubbles create a situation that make the surrounding areas creck up easily under the sun exposure?
13:05 Thank you
I came here for some honest advice about these 2 products but I feel like this is a total boat sponsored video so I am not getting legit info. I could be wrong and am sorry if I am but I will continue my search for a legit comparison and skip part 2.
Which lasts longer? Sapele gunnels on old Boston Whaler. Lots of sun exposure.
Good video. How is lust on vertical surfaces? Any run problems?
One needs to preheat Epifanes by leaving the quart (unopened) in the sun first
Incorrect,, epiphanestacks faster than you’re stating,.and also epiphanies rapid build does not need sanding between,..plus that brushing you show -just mopping back and forth is as about unprofessional technique as I’ve seen.
Never compromise: Epifanes every time! But nice commercial 😅
With all due respect. This is not an apples to apples comparison. 1.) Epihanes recommends thinning for this varnish. If you didn’t want to thin, than you should compare TB to Epiphanes Rapid Coat or RapidClear varnish. 2.) Thinning will affect flow, penetration/ bond and finish. 3.) Cost: Of course TB is cheaper, it already is prethined in the can. Thinner is far cheaper than pure varnish. 4.) Budget: Time is Money. Frequency of varnishing and performance should be a major consideration. Just saying…
Thanks for this video, great info. Just wondering how either of these would look like on outdoor pine wood? Restoring a 1928 cottage style 4 bedroom house in a rural development in Pennsylvania. Hope to hear what you think... Thanks
Total Boat Lust should be thinned with their specialized thinner for larger projects. Really it's better to thin 50% with xylene and spray it and then 25% for all the next coats. Why brush a whole cabin, that is just way too slow. Total Boat Lust can be recoated in an hour or 2 and there is no need to sand between coats, if you can spray even. I have used both products and TB Lust is not only more durable it can be layered faster. It is more of a pro product though and takes more skill to apply. For DIYers I recommend TB Gleam 2.0, it levels a little better and had longer work time.
It is pronounced "Epifawness" Your credibility is diminishes when you can't pronounce the name correctly. Lust absolutely will not go on smooth nor brus out. It also will not smooth out and too easily leaves holidays.
New subscriber here.... great video! Epifanes fan here on 90ft of mahogany toerail on my 1973 ChrisCraft Commander 41. Because that wood is nearly 50 seasons old I use Smiths penetrating epoxy on sanded surface, one coat of mahogany filler, sealed in with penetrating epoxy and then at least one coat of Epifanes clear varnish.
Thanks for the sub and tip!
Awesome video- thanks! Quick question- for exterior teak, eg caprail, what is your opinion on TB Lust vs TB Gleam 2.0?
TB lust, thanks for watching and sorry for the delayed response.
Nice boat. I'm considering using this paint on my own boat. It says 130 square feet. Did it seem to actually cover this it says on the can for you?
The coverage was what was indicated if not a little more. Are you using on the exterior or interior?
@@MVBABAYAGA both. I'm planning to do a fiberglass deck and some cabinets on my back deck in it. Thinking of using in my head also. Looks like decent stuff to work with
Killer video bro thank u
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for making this video. By the way, have you tried Epifane two parts pu varnish?
Thanks for having a look!
I just subbed yesterday, your background music is very distracting, it’s annoying.
Wish no background sounds
Good info, I have a GB’s 42 and its time to varnish. I subbed and liked.
Lance Armstrong!!!
"Epi FAN is"
Great video! But you know you're mispronouncing Epifanes right?
Hi I’m unsure if you got my last comment. We love your videos. Would you happen to know where we can get the headliner redone? We are in marina del Rey. 1976 pacemaker
Hi, sorry for the delay we have been on the road. What type of headliner are you looking to do?
Do you wear we can redo the headliner? We are in marina del Rey. 1976 pacemaker.
I have some red cedar live edge OUTDOOR bartops that I need to seal and protect. After researching and speaking to several people...it seems as if varnish is the way to go. I was thinking about Epifanes. Do you recommend Total Boat instead? It will have all weather exposure from the Kentucky weather. I'm also new to the process. Just built a pool bar and decided to do the live edge bartops. Any helpful information will be appreciated 🙂
Hi Brenda, They are both going to perform very similar, the color is a tad different. The benefit to us is the quick recoat time and no sanding in between coats. I have been told Epifanes has a rapid coat product also but haven't seen it out here on the west coast. Sounds like a great project. Thanks for watching.
It's that simple, just go to the Stodoys website and enter the world of woodworkers.
Woodglut has a very large project base.
You can use Stodoys and plans. The best plans and very detailed instructions. You can learn a lot from them and do it yourself.
Would total boat be best for outside swings. We are talking Texas weather
So far it acts really well for our weather: humidity, UV, and salt water. I personally think It should do well in your region. I would advice to call Total Boat. They have outstanding customer service and I called them on many occasions about their products. They are very helpful. We are not sponsored by them in any ways. Just trying to see what product works best for our projects.
Thanks for making this. About to Lust on our boat rails. Now subbed.
Thank you for watching, we really appreciate it! If you didn't know we also have another channel @boattourtv, make sure to check that out. Let us know how the rails turn out.
@@MVBABAYAGA awesome, will do.
OK, you got my subscription and like. I've watched other varnish comparison videos, which I liked too, but you brought new aspects for consideration. Appreciate the video, the efforts and that you are restoring an older boat. And I probably enjoyed the shaking of the cans too.
Thank you for watching and glad we brought up some points about varnishing. I agree, the can shaking is my favorite part also! ~The Crew
the JD tech team is really awesome. good video, thanks
We agree!
thank you
Very good vid. I recently purchased a 1986 Sea Ray 300 Sundancer. A LOT of teak. I had at one point said i would not buy a boat with a lot of teak because of the work. Since the price was right and I knew how the boat was maintained I bit the bullet. The first thing I did was removed the swim platform inserts to refurbish during the winter. Well I have spent countless hours on youtube learning what to do. I got lots of procedure but the products used were many and confusing as to what to do and what to do it with and why. Asprin was my lunch and dinner.... until now. Thank you man for your simple to understand instructions, product advice and why.
Glad you could take something away from the videos and it helped you. Congrats on the Sea Ray and let us know how the progress is going. If you're on Instagram you can follow us there for more up to date information and see how we are doing things on our boat, we have been working with a lot of teak recently, look for MVBABAYAGA on Insta to find us!
Cool project. I like what you are doing. If I may suggest, don't add the techno music to the background when you are talking. It is distracting and makes it hard to listen to with headphones. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching in the future,
Hi Alison, first thank you so much for subscribing we really appreciate it. Secondly, thank you again, we noticed after uploading the music was far to loud and were left with pulling it and redoing it or learning from our mistake and moving forward. We opted for leaving it and learning. We will make sure to lower the background music quite a bit and preview much more carefully. Thanks again for your feedback.
Thanks for the shoutout! So psyched for the future of boating in San Diego with you guys!
Our pleasure, we are looking forward to it also.
Great video guys keep them coming.
Thanks Don! Will do!
I think it would be so much more difficult owning these old machines if you didn't work on them yourself. Plus its actually enjoyable when things go well. I like the break down of costs. Subscribed
Thank you, that was the first-mates idea about the break down of costs. We totally agree about working on them yourself, there is struggle but the reward is well worth it. If we don't know something we learn it and try it out. Happy boating MV Intrigue
I have Perkins 6.354 in my boat and I run group 31 with 950cca batteries and its been fine for a year and a half
Good to know, thanks for the information.
What grit of paper do you use from start to finish?
Hi there and thanks for watching our videos! We start with 80, then 120, then 320 or 400. We like this combo the best, unless the surface is pretty smooth to start with and I will jump to 100 grit right off the bat. On this project since I used a filler in certain areas I wanted the surface to match all over. I was using 80 on the filler spots so used it on the whole structure to make it all uniform. Its questionable to use 320 or 400 at end since I have found most marine paint will fill up 120 marks well, but still hit it at the end with 320 or 400. Hope this answered your question? If it didn't let me know and how to explain better. Thanks again for following and watching us. Carl & Yulia

How do you like working with Interlux? Any tips?
We like it, it's a good product. We will be doing an episode in the future to compare it against Totalboat Wet Edge, keep your eye open.
Great review of both products! Can't wait to check out part 2!
