I Was Totally Wrong About The Housemaid
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden is a book that I've seen multiple times in many different bookstores. However, it was always a novel that I avoided because I'm not a fan of the book's cover. They always say never to judge a book by its cover; let's see if they're right.

Circe: The Feminist Retelling We Desperately Needed
Просмотров 24921 день назад
Madeline Miller's Circe takes one of the most misunderstood characters in Greek mythology and gives her a voice-and I have a lot of thoughts. In this video, I'm breaking down what makes this retelling so powerful and why I think this version of Circe should inspire Christopher Nolan's upcoming Odyssey movie.

This Book Feels Like an Anime Fever Dream (Tatami Galaxy Review)

The Tatami Galaxy by Tomihiko Morimi is unlike anything I've ever read-quirky, chaotic, and bursting with existential humor. In this review, I dive into why this book feels like stepping into a surreal anime fever dream, where the lines between reality and fantasy blur. If you love books that challenge the norm or are a fan of mind-bending anime like The Tatami Galaxy series, this one’s for you...

The Horror of Eating People: Tender is the Flesh Reviewed

Thriving in the Chaos of my Late 20s
hiyah! so this video inspired me to pick up the book since it’s on kindle unlimited. my thoughts are fairly similar, it’s a pretty good 4 stars, it kept me wanting to come back but no way am i reading the rest of the series its fine where it ended 💀. thanks for the rec!
This is the first youtube criticism of this book ive seen that actually felt genuine and thoughtful rather than a moral panic about bad things in a book. I relate to you in this book finding you "at the right time" the same happened to me and it was spooky. Thank you
I just struggled with this book. It felt like it was trying to be SHOCKING and INTELLECTUALLY EDGY, but it was written in a way that made it feel like a new/young author trying to make a jumpscare in book form. It had a lot of opportunities for talking about how we decide someone's humanity, or treatment of women, or how sexualizing someone can be just as objectifying and dehumanizing as other forms of seeing someone as what they are and not who they are, but it just didn't go anywhere. The main character not having a name for most of it was fine with me because some authors do that so it can feel like it really is everyone and anyone in a society; but you've gotta give them actual depth to form that connection with if there's no name. There was no depth with this guy. And same with the very concept of eating people; if you're going to make the massive leap that eating humans is the only possible option, you have to have some worldbuilding depth to help with the suspension of disbelief. You don't have to do massive summaries, but you have to give some idea of WHY we don't use manufactured meat or insects/insect meal or go vegan. Because all the dry attempts at drama or edgyness in the book really don't land when I can roll my eyes and say "just go eat some chickpeas about it, ffs"
The story felt like it was trying to be good at multiple things but it failed at all of them. My hopes were really high for the novel, but the story itself didn't even come close. Everything that you mention I agree with the story feels lackluster, and I really wish the manufactured meat or insects part was mentioned. It felt like, as a reader, I was just expected not to think about it.
It took me so long to read The Housemaid because of all the hype and finally read it a couple of weeks back and had a great time. My first Freida McFadden was The CoWorker (loved it so much!) then I read Never Lie (Her Best Work in my opinion). So glad you enjoyed this read. You're gonna have so much fun reading her catalog. Happy reading!
I'm really interested in reading her other works; I am looking into "Never Lie." I'm still debating on reading the rest of The Housemaid trilogy.
Recommendations are always good way to find a solid book.
You are 100% right about that, I'm glad I took her recommendation into consideration :)
really enjoyed this book but I thought it gets too crazy and stupid by the ending lol. and I agree that it works better as a standalone book.
Yeah, the ending was definitely crazy; I bought the next two books originally, then returned them after asking myself, "Where else can this story go where it needs two more books?".
Enjoyed the video, I'll check out the book. The cover does not really do anything for me either, it's so boring and cheesy looking. I do find the sound on your last two videos a little quiet, might need to tweak some volume settings. :)
The cover is soooooooo boring, in my opinion, but the book is really good :). I got some new equipment and haven't got the full hang of it yet, but I have no excuses. The next video will have all the problems fixed; I truly appreciate your feedback. It helps me make better videos :).
@@Billie_Cook Hey! It's a learning journey and all that jazz, it's no biggie at all to adjust things as ya go. ^_^
Never judge a book by its cover. It is the story inside that counts. Great book review!
I have fully and truly learned my lesson, neve judge a book by its cover lol.
I am finally ready to leave my thoughts: I actually liked the real mundane parts of the book that were “less interesting” because in those parts I felt at ease for the characters. Loved: The friendships and fights in those friendships, moments that showed reciprocated intimacy, career talk, family. Confused: JBs kiss with Jude also confused me and didn’t think it served a purpose in the story? Nothing came out of it after either. I will not be hearing you out about Jude’s and William’s relationship. I actually always got the vibe from early on in the book that they were going to have intimacy. I also think it’s okay if William saw a bit of Heming in Jude because you gravitate towards people who feel familiar and give you comfort. Jude: the frustration was so bad at points for me too. I would be screaming why why why!!!!!????? Andy frustrated me…. But in his defense everyone knows too but is so scared of Jude being a flight risk. Fav character: Harold. His parts of the book broke me the most. The promise just knife to the chest. My overall rating is 4.5/5
The mundane parts were some of the best parts of the novel, just a bunch of friends being friends and growing up together. In many ways, the book made me think of my friends and I and how things will remain the same or change as we get older. I will forever be unconfused about the JB kiss. I feel that if it had been established that Willem had romantic feelings for Jude earlier in the novel, their relationship would have felt a lot more natural. However, with the way that the author wrote Willems backstory with Hemming, it felt to me more like Willem felt romantically for Jude because he felt sorry for him. I found it a tad bit strange that they have been friends for years, and all of a sudden, when Willem is 40, he's like, "Wow, I like Jude". Andy is my favorite character in the novel, but I definitely understand the love for Harold; I wish that Malcolm got more development; I feel as though he could've been my favorite character in the book if his story was further explored.
I enjoyed this discussion about the novel. You grappled with your emotions quite eloquently, excited to watch more reviews! *Spoilers below!!* In terms of Jude's trauma, I thought it was a realistic representation for two reasons: 1. the fairytale-like nature of being saved and then something bad happening captures the way a child views the world - there is a sense of childlike naivety and hope that maybe how they are safe, only to be let down. It is a very brutal depiction of what, dreadfully, many many children experience every day. 2. I think the repetitive almost "mundane" nature of the trauma allows the reader to really feel what Jude experiences. When you are so deeply traumatised and abused, your whole worldview changes and you are unable to keep your head above water, even in situations where others might. The hopelessness and helplessness of this character and extreme pain he feels for so much of the book felt so poignant and realistic to me. Also the way people reacted when he tried to take his life and Andy failing him- that felt honest to me. For me, Caleb was the most unsettling part of the whole book. I still think about that scene and shudder. All of that said, I absolutely take great care when recommending this book to people - and I love it. It seems like a modern masterpiece (with many problems) so I always enjoy talking with others because it gives you so much to think about. Take care.
I truly loved what you had to say. Some people were surprised that I had “A Little Life” as my favorite book I read last year. The book has its problems buts it’s also really good. There’s so much nuanced discussion that can be held from the characters, the setting, and the ending of the book. It’s a novel that starts conversations and I absolutely love that.
"Look mom.... he's crying" LOLOLOL kids will be kids
That kid will understand one day when he’s my age 😂.
Great review. I remember watching that long Odyssey movie. Never actually read greek mythology. And when you mentioned she was the one who turned the men into animals I immediately remembered her character from the movie LOL
I loved watching The Odyssey in high school. I really like the version of Circe that Madeline Miller created and hope that we get this version of Circe in Christopher Nolan’s version of The Odyssey.
do you have a good reads ? i would like to see your thoughts and reviews since we read similar books :)
I currently do not have a GoodReads. I've been told that I should definitely create an account though. I'll create an account and post on the community tab once it's up :)
Have you read anything by Clarice Lispector? Interested in your thoughts!
I have not, if you have any recommendations please send them my way 👀.
I loved this book too! I think it does a really good job fleshing her out. Throughout this whole video, I jusr had snippets of EPIC the musical, a musical about the Odyssey, playing in my head. There is a whole Circe saga. If you like musicals, I HIGHLY recommend it.
I saw snippets of the musical online and had no idea it existed. I’m going to check it out it kind of cool 👀.
The cover of this book is beautiful.
One of my favorite book covers 😗
Fully agree!!
Great video like always !
Thank you, I appreciate it 😊.
Billie, I hope you and your wife are safe during the wildfires California is having. This was a great review.
Thanks Jess, luckily we’re safe and sound. The effects of the fire are saddening.

One of the most unfortunate things to be in Japan 😂
Love your list and input! Stormlight is a lot to jump into, but it's excellent. I recommend reading other Brandon Sanderson first, like the Mistborn Trilogy. But if you liked Babel, you may like R. F. Kuang's fantasy series The Poppy War. It's a military fantasy that explores some of the ideas in Babel within a fantasy setting.
I really want to read the Stormlight Archives but I get so intimated by the page count 🙃. I heard Mistborn is really good so I’ll probably follow your recommendation 😁. I’ve been wanting to read The Poppy War, hopefully this year I get to The Poppy War and something by Sanderson.
@@Billie_CookYeah, it can definitely be intimidating. Personally, Stormlight is my favorite so I'm biased but Mistborn is another really good entry point.
@@JAAAY62 The current plan is pick up Stormlight towards summer once the school year is over. That way I have no excuse for not reading it lol. 1000 pages scare me but I'll be brave.
do research, it's better to waste your time on a book you might potentially like compared to the ones you don't have any idea of. also avoid modern books, they're mostly trash, it's a lot better to read books written in 18th - 19th century and early to mid 20th century, they have substance even though sometimes the entertainment aspect of it is hit or miss
Some call me crazy for reading books without knowing what they are about or reading the blurb, I kind of like going in blind 👀. There are a fewer older books that I am interested in reading this year.
I love Verbatim 🫶 I always try to go whenever I visit. I got a tote bag as a reminder ☺️ Where is that thrift store?
I could spend all day in Verbatim honestly it was so cool. The thrift store was in the same area as Verbatim, it was somewhere around the corner from Verbatim if I remember correctly 🤔.
That book wall looked really cool.
I wish I could create something like it 🥲
Lovely bookstore vlog.
Thanks Jess ☺️
LOVED this video! the seven year slip by ashley poston is one of my favorites! not sure if it's similar to the dead romantics but i'm sure it still embraces ashley poston's style. my favorite book is also a little life - so beautiful but so devastating!!
I’m going to definitely be checking out The Seven Year Slip, the story sounds like it’s in the realm of The Dead Romantics. Honestly if the only romance author I read for the rest of my life was Ashley Poston I’d be cool with that 😂.
😇
From everything I've heard about A Little Life, you've got tear ducts of steel to not cry reading it. That's wild. Good luck on your 2025 reading goal!
I tried my best to cry lol but no tears fell :'( I have my fingers crossed that I surpass my goal, there are so many cool books I haven't read yet.
Really like the way you concisely review!! I don’t care for most romance either so maybe I will pick up The Dead Romantics!
Thank you! I The Dead Romantics was a fun read, I definitely recommend it to most people who are like me and don’t care for romance novels 😄.
its dope to see a bro do book reviews...subbed
Thank you brother 🙏🏾
Omg this exactly!!!! I always loved reading for fun but hated all of my required reading in school. I eventually became a middle school English teacher who was forced to TEACH the books that I hated and I still continued to hate 😖 seems like the system is created to make students hate reading. I just started my own booktube channel to share my own journey of falling in love with reading again and I've also been re-reading the required books that I hated. Some of them, I still hate, but for many of them, I don't see why middle and high school students should be expected to understand them at that point in their mental and emotional development. I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and look forward to seeing more!!! 😀
Being a high school English teacher now I try my best to choose novels that aren’t going to make students hate reading more than they do now 😅. You ate definitely braver than I, I could not reread those old books I hated. Thanks for the kind words, I’ll definitely check out your channel 😁.
@Billie_Cook unfortunately, with my school system, I had to just teach the books that they told me to teach, which made it an unpleasant experience for both me and the students, but I had to put a smile on my face and pretend to be excited everyday 😬 I had to giggle a bit while watching your video since "Of Mice and Men" was not one of my favorites, but I'm planning on reading it again to see if I just wasn't mature enough to get it in Intermediate school 😅
About The Four Winds, I DNFd it at the end of the 2nd act (googled the ending). However, I read The Women and The Nightingale and they were both 5 stars!!! Had I started with The Four Winds, I also wouldn’t want to read other book from KH. But I’m glad I did because The Nightingale is the only book to ever make cry my heart out!!!
Okay, you have convinced me to give her another chance. I’ll check out Nightingale. I really am trying to find the book that will make me cry 😭.
I'm so honoured! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! 🥳. Thanks for the copy of Spawn, I’ll definitely be reading it 😁.
@@Billie_Cook Enjoy!
That’s a good amount of books in a year.
10 books was the goal, getting 7/10 isn’t bad but I can definitely do better in 2025 😤
I own the dead romantics I just couldn’t get into it!!1 A little life changed my life though !
I loved The Dead Romantics, I’m not someone who is really into romance books but I found The Dead Romantics to be right up my alley :). I feel like if I read A Little Life when I was younger it definitely would have a bigger impact on for sure.
@ I’m the same way! Romance is usually a hit or miss with me!!! That’s awesome that you enjoyed it though 😄
👍🏻
I know lot of people (myself included) who read Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom and that duology got them back into reading. Why not have high school students read books like that? Because you better believe Leigh Bardugo was s a y i n g t h i n g s about neoliberalism. Most great American novels are about how much capitalism sucks anyway 😂 And there’s tons of other themes to talk about in Six of Crows besides
I haven’t heard of Six of Crows before but it sounds very interesting 👀. I’m going to check it out, it definitely sounds different than most books read in high school.
@ I love Leigh Bardugo’s writing. I wouldn’t say Six of Crows is academic but that’s kind of the point, it’s fun to read YA, but with more depth that I think educators could pull from. I just think it’s silly to treat every high schooler like a proto-English major rather than a life long reader first. Side note: Six of Crows technically occurs after the Shadow and Bone trilogy but Shadow and Bone is not essential to read before jumping into Six of Crows. There are context clues that fill things in where needed, but the rest is different characters, different setting. I went straight into Six of Crows myself and enjoyed it
My 10 year high school reunion is still a couple years away but I’m already thinking about whether or not I really want to go. I don’t want to have to boil down the last decade of my life into an elevator pitch to impress people I didn’t care about back then let alone now. I’ve been unemployed for over a year, which I don’t want to try to justify. And I changed my legal first name. I don’t identify as trans or non-binary and my gender presentation hasn’t changed. I don’t want to spend a whole evening being dead named or saying “well in HS my name was…” I feel like reunions are just fraught if you’re not following a very normative path in life. But it’s still expected that everyone goes. Maybe closer to the event I’ll call up my HS friends and ask if they want to ditch it and grab dinner instead.
I 100% feel you on this. Having to justify or explain life decisions to former classmates is definitely not an exciting task. I went to get lunch with a few people I knew from high school and it was nice to catch up that way. :)
Another thing that frustrates me about Andy is that he kept continuously blaming Jude’s friends for Jude’s worsening health and stating and threatening that they should have more responsibility over him meanwhile he’s the doctor who should of admitted him
100%, Andy just kept deflecting the blame to others instead doing what he knew should be done. I understand that he didn’t want to admit Jude but at what point do you do your job as a doctor!?!?
@ litterally at some point it just began to feel like a constant style of Andy complaining that Jude didn’t do what he wanted each week when he obviously wasn’t going to change
I read it first at 13 then recently re-read it at 17 and I feel like the first time I was sad after finsihing it and didn’t really have any criticisms but now I see a lot of stuff to critique in terms of the depiction of suffering
The way that the author depicts suffering as something that is never ending or something that you can never recover from was one of my biggest critiques. Even now I feel like my feelings for A Little Life are complicated.
fun fact the dude who owns/runs? the publishing company is practically in hiding cause of the highly controversial book they published.
Wait that’s actually super crazy 😳. I’m going to look more into this right now 👀.
@Billie_Cook Yeah I heard about it on Jake Adelstein's podcast. Evaporated: Gone with the Gods. He was trying to find the man because, if I remember correctly, they also published a how-to guide on disappearing in Japan. In the podcast episode he mentioned they also published manga. I looked up their wiki to see Tatami Galaxy😅
That book looks very cool. I would read it just from the cover alone.
What’s really cool is that the anime used the way the characters appear on the cover of the book in the show.
I am glad you liked the book. Happy New Year!
Last book before the end of the year. Happy New Year Jess 😁.
@ Thank you.
that cover is beautiful
Easily one of my favorite book covers 😃
I read my first adult horror this year, I Am Legend, and the writing was so good that I was too scared to it read it at night. I love suspense too. I dont have a stomach for Stephen King- incredible writer but dude is unhinged. Do you enjoy scifi horor? Thanks for all the recs!
I love sci-fi horror a lot, honestly I enjoy all types of horror. I feel like horror books are very similar to horror movies. There are some horror books that are amazing and scare me reading at night and there are some that are just awful. I really want to read more horror/suspense books next year :)
I avoided it as trauma porn with zero regrets based on the many reviews :)
I wish someone described the book to me in that way. I was just told it was sad 🙃.
Hi Billie, Funnily enough, Barbara, also sent me a copy of the same book; and like you I was utterly gobsmacked that an author would endeavour to contact my small-but-slowly-gowing Booktube channel.
