    Great stuff! Good to see that the bees still have a few tricks that Roger hasn't come across before take can take him by surprise. Using the flying bees from one colony to help out another is really useful knowledge I reckon.

    Roger, why didn’t you cull the queen cells down to one or two. Won’t you have multiple swarms as the different queen cells hatch?

      Earlier in the season, I would agree with you, but it's late September and a small colony. Perhaps I should have said that, but quite frankly, I was thrown a bit by it. That shows it really is live and I'm not an actor! Roger

      Is it too cool for drawing foundation/building comb ?

    • @rogerpatterson3167
      @rogerpatterson3167 25 дней назад

      @@helentaylor2670 It's the temperature inside the hive that matters, not outside. Bees only build comb if they need it and if they have an income. There is an ivy flow at the moment. If they store the nectar/honey, it will granulate solid, so it's little use to them, so I might as well get them drawing comb with it. Those colonies were packed solid with food, so there is a need for space. I placed the foundation and starter strips where I thought bees are most likely to draw them out. If you don't have an ivy flow, then don't expect bees to draw foundation.

      I find the benefits are often over-stated. The greatest benefit in my opinion is that lower frames don't get stuck to the upper box so much.

    Yes. Ivy honey? Tricky one. You can't rely on the bees making it on the other hand if they do make it they can make too much and the whole hive can get jam packed full of it.

Very much appreciate the information and look forward to seeing how you combine nucs and hearing the reasons it's needed. Should help me decide if some of mine need to be. PS. You said you Created a x8 Frame "Patterson Hive" to be less Heavy re Supers etc. . . If any Beek finds Hive Bodies to Heavy to work, why not try a Horizontal Hive ? 👀 I've made my own utilising a 'dead' Deep Freezer Box. Well Insulated 'freezer Walls' 😏 And thick Covering Planks with 'view' Port Holes using Glass Coasters. Inspect without opening the Hive. . . Nice ! And the orginal Hindged Lid made into a Sloping Top Roof with Jumbo deep Langstroth Frame use. Best Hive ever ! 👍 Or maybe have a go at French Warrre Hives too. Nice Compact Structure that any Beek can Lift and Utilise easily. Especially if using Frames, rather than Top Bars. Easily 'created' from spare Pallet Wood. . . Easy. 👍 Hope this helps too. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2024 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

    A very enjoyable view of 'Live at the Hive' after being live ! Always interesting listening to Roger and BIBBA content. 😎 Been a long 'Wet Day' and started watching a BIBBA Randy Oliver Lecture this 3AM on RUclips A 2023 Lecture. 👍 (This Beek knew the Rain was coming today ! A Cuppa and lose yourself in Bees when aches do their thing (!) I'm still a fairly new Beekeeper, now in my Fourth Year. Started with x6 Colonies. And now have x18 ! No Swarms on my watch. A collection of Nucs and Hives of Langstroth, UK Nationals and French Warre Hives. Nothing like having different Hive types to work with. I wanted to learn the different types, and know I would 'have Bees' on gear that any 'new Beek' might want, in starting their Beekeeping journey ! My saying is a 'smaller' thing can fit into a "bigger" box and not the other way round ! Aka a National Frame can be nested 'under a Langstroth Top Bar'. DIY strip from an Old Frame, or Pallet Wood. Simples. A Warre Frame (mainly what I prefer) or its Top Bar can also nest nicely within a National Frame. You can also 'wedge a block' at the end of a Langstroth Box : and rest the Lugs of a National within its cavity. Same applies to a National Nuc too : with a few Warre Frames, or Top Bars with Natural Drawn Comb : (some may need trimming at bit depth wise) if TB's + Comb, all used as a 'Starter Strip' in the next New Frame. Nothing wasted ! I prefer my Bees to Draw out their own Comb over premade Commercial Foundation use. I do like to also 'Tension Wire all my Frames' by making /Drill Side Holes, Use a Slider Clamp, Wire and Nail in the Ends. Unclamped the 'Frames' : are like Piano Wire and hold up very well in my x2 Frame Radial Extractor. Some Frames with own Starter Strips become my 'Cut Comb' Frames, naturally ! Hopes this helps. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2024 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 I've made lots of DIY Hive elements. As I have plenty of Pallet Wood to utilise. Also a great local 'Resource' is dropping in to your local 'Charity : Mens Shed'. A Cuppa and Natter over anything Wood will ensure a Beek can get great 'Carpentry Advice' as well. I've even got them interested in Bees too. . . 🤭 Mens Shed started in OZ and are now in most Countries including here in Scotland ! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Hello from Ohio in the States. I really enjoy watching and listening to Roger. I also believe in many cases, it's the pheromones of the Queen that dictated the hive temper. I have seen that with a new Queen or after a cell hatches, the temper calms down long before any genetic change happens and recently mentioned it in one of my recent videos. Keep it up!

    My personal theory is that bees will change their minds at the start of a strong honey flow and an oncoming spell of good weather especially if the weather has been cold and wet beforehand. I have seen abandoned and torn down supercedure queen cells as a result. Disappearing bees - yes odd one that. I'm seeing more in recent years. More than I ever did years ago.
