Cool! Glad it worked out. And yeah, this engine is crazy complicated to sync properly for sure. I think that plastic top on the carb has been replaced before, only because it has the newer style idle mixture screw on the side of the carb instead of inside the air box where you can't get at it.

The red one should be a 1958 johnson 3 1/2 hp.
Nope, red one is a '57 3hp, not a 3 1/2 hp, Johnson never made those. Green one is a '55.
@@VintageOutboardManare you sure, you are correct about the hp. But, now the year, didn't johnson and evinrude in 57 had the letters written in cursive and only in 57 then in 58 they went back to block letters. That is why I said a 1958. Let me know I'm not that old and can't remember 66 years ago. I was still in diapers. lol
@TJD656 You're partially right there. Evinrude had their cursive style in '57. Johnson had it in '58. In '56, Johnsons were red top to bottom. In '57, the cowling was red with white (white bracket and top), and in '58 they were white with red (red bracket and top).
@@VintageOutboardMan ok, basically it was opposite on the johnson. Q.2. Didn't johmson have a fuel pump on the motors first and was that in 57.
@@TJD656 Both Evinrude and Johnson switched to fuel pumps (instead of the pressure tanks) in 1960. I believe the fuel pumps were first tested on their Gale production line in about '58 or '59, but I could be wrong there.
As Always 👍👍 ...........
The Evinrude will outrun the old Johnson for sure, but the Evinrude can never match the Johnson's idle quality. You still need to do some sync adjustments on the Evinrude, should run alot smoother. The sync adjustments are a real pain though. I will try to find the procedures and send them to you if you like...
@@donk499 I did a video and mentioned your help.I will post it soon. It was that little lower gasket. The engine runs much better but you are correct...it still needs work.

Good thing you had that old Johnson to get you back to the dock.
Thank God for that one!! 😆
OK... A few things to consider here. First, that stupid air box and gasket must be installed properly or the engine will run lean at high RPM and stall out. But, in this case the engine kind of sounds rich. Now, that damn "primer" could be an issue. It has three positions: Off/warm up/prime.... Here is a case where OMC spent more money and made things much worse... When you pull that primer all the way out, it actually pumps extra fuel into the carb through that top hose (provided you have built up pressure in the fuel line with the fuel tank primer bulb). The warm up position just allows a little extra fuel to bypass the primer and help the engine warm up through that hose on top of the carb. And OFF doesn't allow any extra fuel into the upper carb hose. One of the big mistakes many owners make is pulling the primer all the way out, starting the engine, then forgetting to push it all the way back in after it warms up a bit. So, to rule out flooding/primer malfunction, simply pull the hose off the top of the carb while the engine is misbehaving to see if it clears up. Like I said, kind of sounds rich at high speed also. So, once the primer has been ruled out then we have to revisit that GD horrible plastic carb. You replaced that little rubber hose (idle circuit pick up) which is a common issue. But I am thinking you may have forgotten to reinstall that brown colored gasket under the white fuel pick up that sits at the bottom of the bowl. Think of the old style OMC carbs and that thick donut gasket that sits between the bowl nozzle well and carb body... Leave that out and it will probably run rich at high RPM because fuel is short circuiting into the main nozzle/bypassing the high speed needle. That brown rubber gasket on this newer carb serves the same purpose as that old cork donut gasket. Now onto the crazy sync process on this engine. Gone are the days of the throttle valve being completely closed at idle...See that screw/spring above the metal throttle arm on the carb?? That is the throttle cracking screw. I forgot what the initial setting is, but the throttle valve on these carbs is actually held slightly open at idle. There is no hash mark on the throttle cam because it is suppose to be set so the cam starts pushing the carb open immediately when the throttle is advanced. There is actually an idle timing setting on these engines, see the little moveable idle timing stop on the left side of the powerhead? I'm guessing you did not mess with that so probably do not have to worry about that setting. I have forgotten just what the initial idle mixture adjustment is as well. But, it probably from what the manual says because it looks like that plastic top on the carb has been replaced. The actual syncronization process for this engine is quite "involved", way too complicated for sure. Finally, you reported that that cheesy adjustable plastic cam was broken and you cemented it back together. Are you sure the carb is opening up properly at WOT?
@@donk499 Wow! I read that about three times. Thank you for the help, I will dig into it tomorrow. I’m thinking that bottom gasket isn’t in place. The thick donut one in the middle that the main jet screws into is in place though. It is fun for me to learn these things. I appreciate the thoughtful words!!!
@@islandtoybox "thick donut one around the main jet..."?? Glad to help, hope it works out... Those carburetors are awful, and the sync procedure is way too complicated!
You were 100% correct. The seal on the bottom was bad. Seems to work perfect after a carb rebuild kit. I will water test soon
@@islandtoybox Cool, so happy it worked out
It runs as nicely as it looks!
I need to visit scrap piles in your area! These were actually real nice engines in spite of some horrible engineering flaws.
@@donk499 Most of our engines are salty living on the coast. They start giving folks trouble with electronics and cooling and off they go to garage sales cheap. It’s fun to be mechanical in these areas.
@@islandtoybox I live in the northeast salt water also, most of the stuff I see in scrap piles is truly scrap! Can't believe someone chucked that beautiful 8hp in the pile!
Mechanics have told me that 100:1 ratio is ok if you use your motor a lot. If just occasional use, better go 50:1. Both excellent motors. Have had both. With proper care either can last a lifetime. Hard to criticize either!
@@gregweber7325 I have just stuck with the 50/1 as all my other motors run that mix. I don’t feel I’m hurting it by doing so. It’s been running 50/1 all winter just fine.

All tree huggers are a bunch of liberals that don't have anything else to do...
I would agree. OMC would still be in business if this exact engine could be produced today! Rugged, reliable, smooth, and simple to repair. The Evinrudes of this vintage were actually a 7.5hp, which is a completely different powerhead with its own noises. Perhaps it is just the audio quality, but yours almost sounds like it has an exhaust leak somewhere. Yeah, these were a little louder than later ones, but this one seems like it has an exhaust leak.... Loose/leaky exhaust cover perhaps? Nonetheless, yours is a beauty. These engines have an low idle quality that would compete favorably with any of today's dumb ol four strokes.
@@donk499 Well said! Thank you for the information. I will check for anything loose, but in any event I enjoy the sound. Not a piece of plastic on these!!! Great motors for sure
@@islandtoybox Look for a leaky side exhaust cover on the powerhead...Perhaps a leaky base gasket. It should be fairly obvious is one of these spots is leaking, you will see brown/black exhaust goo coming out... OMC at its best for sure.
Sounds great! Beautiful motor! Can’t wait to try mine out! I think yours is a 1955. In 54 they were green with a grayish stripe and 55 was green with a whitish almond stripe then 56 was when the red and white came out!
@@rwoutdoors The red and white are nice looking too. Too bad I’m a Mercy guy because these engines are nice!
@@islandtoyboxI like them both but I’d prefer a merc lol!
Hi, maybe a 55 or 56 not positive but, I think they change the color in 57 to that maroon red. Then they add a fuel pump so, no pressuring the fuel tank. They do sound different from an evinrude. It could be from the design of the cowling.
@@TJD656 I absolutely love the color.
@islandtoybox yes, we could always tell what motor, by the color. How do you come up with all these motors and so clean.
@@TJD656 I look at the story behind them more then the mechanics as I feel confident with being able to fix them. Only 20% of my motors came to me in working condition. Most of them I enjoy and sell rather quickly. All the Evinrude motors in previous videos are gone. This one I will keep thru the summer and enjoy, then probably sell next fall
@islandtoybox They are a lot of fun to work on, so simple. My I ask, I believe you has 3 fifty seven evinrudes those are the ones with cursuve writing weren't they 5 1/2 hp so, how much will you get for one of those beauties.
