Just a short video I put together showing off some of the basic items I carry on me when camping out 1870/1900s style. Apologies for the poor audio quality, I forgot my mic and I live between a main road, an airport and an ambulance station 🙃 I think I got away with It by adding some music over the top. When I get the chance, I’ll head out further afield and make a more detailed version where I...

About Bekesha. In Poland we don't consider this a coat, because that's is made of shipskin. This kind of clothing we call kożuch. Kożuch that's a common winter attilie in Slavic countries, nowadays kinda rare, but just a few decades ago it was relativly common, because winter were harsher back then. You can easily spot a lot of them in Polish movies made during time of the People's Republic of Poland, because they were locally made, they were very warm. Of course they were in various lenghts, shorter and longer like ankle lenghts. It was pretty much a basic Slavic winter garment in the ages past, peasants also had homemade variants. Even this military bekesha you shown in the video is in its cut pretty close to a civilian variant.

I reserve "greatcoat" for military coats. Our surplus store has some Canadian ones that looked to be WWI with their brown wool. I had so many overcoats so I didn't buy one but now I regret it. I do have a wool coat from an Army Chaplain with his name inside. Thank you Capt. Padre Isaac 1961. PS. I picked up British No.2 wool dress pants and love them but need them tailored down.

Up till around the late '90's good quality full length wool coats were still being made. Nowadays such coats, if you can actually find them, sell for obscene amounts of money. Todays coats barely cover your ass, they're for show only, that's absurd.

Just a small correction: while wool is a natural material, its environmental friendliness is definitely affected by the high tax to the environment during the refining process. Solution: buy vintage. Two birds with one stone; vintage wool is more likely to have been sourced within a reasonably short distance from where it was refined and tailored, reducing carbon emissions; the regular use of the vintage garment over time will have offset the taxing refinement process whilst reducing the demand for modern wool which has a litany of other issues you don’t need to consider when buying vintage. Buy vintage. Also vintage tailoring is overwhelmingly superior to modern clothing.
