Is Ballard the BEST Neighborhood in Seattle?

Ballard is one of my favorite places to spend a sunny Sunday, which is exactly what I did this past weekend. I wandered through the market and had a delicious egg sandwich. Then it was over to Ballard Locks, along the Burke Gilman Trail, and eventually to Golden Gardens Beach. Follow more adventures on Instagram: seattletravelguru

Best Neighborhoods in Seattle: Wallingford Edition
Seattle housing way overpriced.
There are not enough content creators from Seattle transplants, so thank you for this content! We’re moving in the summer and most videos are from the perspective of real estate agents looking to sell homes, and not nearly enough for folks who just want apartment living.
Wonderful ❤❤
How is 2,000 hard for two people in Seattle?
It’s great to be a beaver and it’s always great to be a beaver
There are videos on how to make a fake window box, that adds extra light.
New sub here! Seattle is way too expensive but it’s pretty common. I’m from Seattle as well-I recently moved more north of Seattle and found that renting privately is more affordable; I got lucky with a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom condo for $1800 in a nice area🎉all timing and a bunch of research & im a single mom so I have to be extra cautious where I spend my money! Good luck on the hunt!
Girl move down south like Kent, Tacoma , Lakewood, burien… Seattle and especially Ballard is outrageous !! I was born and raised in Bellevue which is extremely expensive city and now live in Kent in a nice house and pay less for what you pay now. And it’s a house
Some people want to live in an actual city. For example cities like Burien and Kent are not easy to navigate as pedestrians, as well as the night life within those cities is basically non existent.
Move to Lewiston Idaho and fly into Seattle 288k 7000 sq ft lots of
I moved from Graham and was looking literally anywhere North of that, Everett down to Puyallup, East and West of all that too. I ended up making a spreadsheet because there were so many options out there, although not all fit what I needed/wanted. It was 94 apartments long which included 40 I was open to & needed to gather more information, 10 I toured, 43 were a definite no-go, and 1 winner in Lynnwood, although many were in Seattle area. The winner apartment had so many positives that I immediately applied the day of the tour. I have to admit, I REALLY wanted out of my place in Graham, like 1yr ago (lol 😩) and the two women I spoke with in the office were absolutely wonderful which is why i jumped on this unit so quickly. They won me over without even trying because they were so genuine. I just moved in on 11/27 and have found some issues that make the apartment seem not as good as when I saw it, but I can see myself living here for quite some time because the issues are very minor and no big deal. I'm happy with my choice and I wish the same for anyone else finding a place to live. Looking for a safe space where you can actually relax is difficult, in a way, but once you know, you KNOW! 🥰
Ok, Graham isn't anywhere near Seattle. It's near Tacoma, (which is high rent as well). You didn't say where you actually moved to.
@Raven78822 I definitely know Seattle and Graham aren't close 😂
Are you part Korean? I see an old Korean map on the wall.
I know we have normalized high rent prices but come on. It's dishonest to charge so much for a place to live. Nothing is accessible anymore 😢 working full time as a teacher, I can't afford any of these without getting a second job..
That's expensive.
11:23 I’d wash my clothes in the shower/tub and only use the dryer 😂 that’s expensive for washing and drying! Especially if your clothes need extra time.
Haha right?!? I thought it was pretty steep!
Do you pay extra for utilities?
Yes, it’s about $100 extra per month split between 2 people plus we pay $25 per month for internet.
Yes, you do in Seattle.
Omg we pay 320 for xfiityz, home security and internet but we pay for a lot of extra shit. I wanna die every momnth but my husband says there's no better deals for what we want as far as our TV shows and all the sports channels
@@vintagejunktofunk4616 Holy cow! There's no way I would spend that much. You could have practically every streaming service for less including internet.
@@jackbaldwin3649 trust me.. I’ve talked to him his mother had talked to him and he says there’s no other way.. but I have heard multiple people say the same thing as . The thing is, is we have bought about 60 movies and we will loose all those if we change or switch but we never re watch those movies anyways …
Only an $84 a month rent increase? South of Seattle the rent increases are around $150 a month 😡
looks like you live in china..
Because of the art? Mostly from Korea and Australia 🤷♀️
Omg seattle is robbing you 😭it’s crazy
Thanks! I enjoyed this video a lot! I have lived in Seattle a long time and have been thinking about downsizing to a condo. I’m thinking about renting in my fave neighborhood (lower Queen Anne) to make sure I like it before I make such a big change. Again, this video was excellent!
I can't imagine paying that much for rent, I'm paying 2350 a month for my mortgage of a 4 bdrm, 3 bath house one a quarter acre in Marysville. This is such a friendly town. So much going on.
Does that include property taxes and insurance?
@jackbaldwin3649 yes
@jackbaldwin3649 I bought it I 2018 for 380, it's now worth almost 700. Prices keep jumping
Oh my Gawd. She talks way too much!
Kinda hard to do a video without talking.
what a bimbo talking about giving your money to RENTING an apartment like it has any form of ownership. get a grip, stop making dumb videos. i rather stay in a dump renting and saving than to waste it down the drain. the fuck
Hi Laura, Fellow Seattleite here. For future reference you may want to investigate the MFTE program. Under the MFTE program-- and if you meet the income limit restrictions-- you may qualify for a reduced cost apartment. Just Google MFTE Seattle. Take care!
Thanks so much! I have heard of this program before but don’t qualify 😕
Have you been to the Kabul restaurant? Wondering how was it?
Why are people charging so much? But you got old crap you gotta live in no renovation. They're not doing anything that's crazy to me
Get out ham no to much money that's crazy greed forreal
I'm with you on the carpet issue - it's icky for sure. So much crud down in that pile...
I am from Seattle and it is absolutely not worth living here unless you make at least $150-175k/yr individually. First time home buyers, forget it unless you’re ok living in an unsafe neighborhood surrounded by homelessness and pay upwards of $850k for a nothing house. Renters, you’ll live here for the Seattle experience, rent an expensive tiny apartment and leave 2-3 years later because you want a better life where you’re comfortable financially and your money goes somewhere
I had a good friend in the late 90’s that lived in the last apartment complex (8) that you showed. I’ve lived all over Seattle, Fremont, Greenwood, Greenlake, West Seattle, Shoreline, Edmonds, MLT. My favorite was Greenlake…I became a daily runner there. It used to be safe to run in the dark back in the 90’s. Good luck to you
Wisdom of experience. 👍
@seattletravelguru get yourself a ventless washer/dryer combo machine. You can hook it up anywhere you have water (easy to split off sink) and you do not need proper dryer hookup/venting because it dries by condensation. The wash water can be drained into the shower. This will change your life and how you think about rentals by eliminating the laundry element.
Just for an FYI I'm from Seattle Washington & honestly you've could've gotten a house for 2100 to 2300... Maybe ask natives from the area... No disrespect but this isn't the best video for affordable housing ... You have to get creative...
You probably haven’t lived in Seattle in 15 years lol
A house for $2300? Maybe 15 years ago but that's impossible now.
I was born and raised in Bellevue and now live in Kent and we pay 2300 for our 2 bedroom rented house and it’s really nice. Big front and back yard for our dog, in a codasac. Great neighborhood by the schools , never have had any problems or issues with any type of theft or break in or gun shots. And before that we lived in.a 3.5 bedroom rented house for 7 years for 1700 only bc our family member was a teacher and he wanted to rent to people associated with the schools so we got really lucky and it was a private neighborhood.. unfortunately he sold it to his daughter 3 years ago so we had to find a new rental but it really easy to find good deals if you know where your looking . But yeah this video gave horrible advice lol I will never live in an apartment ever agaoj.. she needs to rent or buy. We plan on buying next year as we both have had our jobs for 4 years so hopefully find a great forever home
I have a Seattle housing voucher and I live in a brand new luxury apartment 5 minutes from the waterfront. I leased an MFTE unit. My voucher barely covered it by $4 😅 it’s a BEAUTIFUL building with insane amenities and rooftop.
SMH. Too clean, not clean enough.....gotta be near restaurants, bars, etc. even though you have a car......you're paying MORE a month for 500-600 sq. ft. than I pay for a 10 year old 1500 sq. ft. house pmt including taxes and insurance - ridiculous. Just because the suburbs aren't good enough for you? Oh, and quarters for laundry are "too inconvenient"? Man, I'm glad I'm a grown up.
I assume you live with someone which is good. What percentage of your income would go for rent? Rent is so expensive.
You need to be making at least 3x the rent price as a household to apply for most apartments in Seattle.
Eight places ... this must have taken forever to shoot and edit! I worked in a leasing office in Redmond WA for a short period in 2018 and I'll throw in that Nov-Feb is a great time for apartment deals. It's feast or famine in that you may not find much but since no one wants to move in cold weather and holidays, there's often a $200 - $500/month price difference discount. 🎉
Heaven forbid anyone should have to use laundry machines that don't have an app!
Laura, Do you know of a roommate there in Seattle whom I could split the rent with? 😊
Scarecrow Video is a site to believe for all things video in the U-District. Vintage movies from around the world is hard to find
Some youngsters may find these prices high, but none compare to assisted living place:4,000 to start . Glad I own my home, paid for in my 30s.
Or my Arizona home that I bought in 2011 - Nice 4 bed 2 bath home in upper middle class neighborhood with amenities - payment w/ taxes & insurance is $1,019.50. I rent out a room that almost pays the mortgage. It doesn't mean much - but I am grateful I bit the bullet & bought the house when I did. I is most of my retirement & I regularly add $300 - $500 to the principle.
There are special lamps for lack of sunshine/vitamin d 😊 People in sunny areas of the world don't get enough sun cause of work or never leaving the house 😔
Many of the places are so old looking for that price.
Yea, there are newer places available for that price but then you compromise on space, so you can have a new build but maybe only 450-500 sq feet.
@@seattletravelguru that makes sense so you have to choose what’s more important; new build less space or old unit more space. I also think when a unit is much older you also will run into other issues along the way like appliances going out maybe mold and other issues that might not be so visible right away so I think if I had to choose, I would rather choose a new unit that’s less space so I don’t have to worry about so many of those other issues later. Plus when your space is smaller, less likely to hold on to things you really don’t need. I hope you enjoy the new place. Happy Holidays.
Sup Laura, I noticed that on apartment 5 on 13:53, there was a dog, is that your dog? Just checking if it's your dog because I didn't hear you mention it or I missed it, just wanted to know if you factored in pet deposit or pet rent on top of your budget.
No, that was the realtor’s dog. The prices in the video don’t include any pet rent prices 👍
Dope, thanks for the correction!
Seattle is an ish hole.
Compared to where? Seattle is like any other city.
@jackbaldwin3649 stop embarrassing yourself.
@@motionsick I lived in Seattle for over 8 years. Stop being a 'ick and move on.
@jackbaldwin3649 I've lived here much longer than you including the years is wasn't a crime infested garbage dump. Nice try.
@jackbaldwin3649 you gonna a sit there with a straight face and say we haven't had a massive increase in graffiti vandalism in just the last few years?
You didnt do the big reveal.... Which one did you take?
I mentioned near the start of the video that none of these were apartments that we ended up going with. This way I could share a little bit more about these locations without giving away where I live 😅
@@seattletravelguru fair enough! I haven't rented in Seattle in decades- back when I arrived in '91 I rented a small 2bd 700 sq ft house with a HUGE yard for $500. In 30 years maybe you tell your grandkids about how cheap it was in '24.
The managers of these apartments could learn from your video. Lots of things could be fixable, e.g. $3.00/load laundry, and dated carpet (ick). Sheesh. The video was really interesting and fun. I lived in Seattle in the 80s and 90s, and I was really curious how things had changed. Prices are higher, but so are wages.... but otherwise, it was very familiar. Nice work and good luck with your new space!
I came to Seattle when I was in my early 20's and have been here for decades now, so it's interesting to hear your perspective and your expectations. (I'm guessing you've spent time in California when I hear "The" I-5 and "The" Puget Sound!) I hope you continue to get to know and enjoy the city--especially the areas beyond the ones you know now. So much beauty here as you appreciate! And so much more....
I didn't know people didn't call it the Puget Sound. So when you go there you say that you are going to swim in Puget Sound? I have not spent much time at all in California (2 weeks out of my whole life haha). As for "the" I-5, I am likely influenced by my British boyfriend - they put "the" in front of all of their highways. There is so much more of the city to explore, it's one of my goals for the winter - to try to get out and explore the different neighborhoods more!
@@seattletravelguru Yes, so many little verbal oddities that separate the newcomers from the old-timers. Just Puget Sound, although if you are going to swim in those frigid waters, does that mean your British boyfriend has converted you to wild swimming? And then there's Pike Place Market (not Pike's Place) and The Ave (not University Way). And Alki is pronounced alk-eye, not alk-ee. (All of this from someone who initially thought that Rainier might be rainier, as in rainy, rainier, rainiest. Ha.) And the local steamship Virginia V is pronounced Virginia Five. And speaking of ships, do you like Christmas-y things? The Argosy Christmas ships/choirs/bonfire gatherings will be in your area on 12/13 and on 12/23. Oof, I sound like a tour guide
We are also on the lookout for a new apartment.
Hi Laura, i just found you. I live in the Lynnwood area. From what I see your apt is very nice.Too bad the rent is going up there. I just subscribed to your chanel today and really have enjoyed your vlogs.BTW I lived here all my life and love it here.I even love the rain.
Thanks so much for your comment, I'm so glad you have been enjoying the vlogs! It is a shame about our rent price, but we found a great new spot that we really love! So it has all worked out :)
You did a nice job of capturing the November vibe here. And I love your love for the Seattle Public Library. It is a big part of my survival strategy in the winter.
Thanks! It has been a nice cozy month so far! I am SO happy to be in a place with such a good public library. After years of living abroad reading on my Kindle I am so grateful to be able to have access to real in hand books!!
I love all your videos! I just moved here earlier this year and was wondering if you could make a video about how to make friends in the area and deal with the Seattle Freeze. 😅
Yes I would love a video like that as well! I’m planning to take a contract job at a hospital within the next year or the year after I’d love to get this info
Winter is tough, but I've had success with joining groups/events around hobbies. I just showed up to a pickleball court and made friends there, joined a run club, found hiking and skiing groups online / through my workplace. I also like board games and have met people at Mox and have also pushed myself to become friends with people at smaller concerts, but I agree it's hard! Most of the friends I've met are also transplants fwiw. Not because locals are unfriendly, but they likely already have groups they stick to and don't venture as much from. I've yet to try Bumble BFF but have heard good things from a few girls! Oh and also have enjoyed class pass for fitness classes / meeting young ppl there
I was planning to speak about that next month, I'm glad to hear that there are people who want to know more about it! I will move it up to talk about sooner!
Didn't you make videos in Mexico?
haha yes! I still do. This is home base for now and so thought I would share some of my experiences about living here as well.
Surprisingly enough, some of the apartments looked dated. I expected more for your buck. I have to say Los Angeles is so expensive that some of the apartments are small, dated & dirty inside with a trashy neighborhood for about $2k a month. I love Washington. It's a beautiful state. I would definitely live there. Haven't been back since the summer of 2019 just before covid. I truly miss it. Nice vid. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Beautiful view...... beautiful lady
