Intermediate Class correction...
Просмотров 2262 месяца назад
Clearly defining how the class is organized. We will be focusing on practical CW rather than random characters. Short stories and some of the QSO practice files will be used, but we emphasizing head copy of the most important CW words; works like RST, QSO, QTH, BUT, FER (the CW word for FOR), etc. We'll drill on those subjects, so by graduation, you will be comfortable with QSO, DX operations, ...

I print out the entire transcript of your videos, so I can better understand your intent. Unfortunately not everything you talk about is transcribed in the Transcript.
I would appreciate your actual sending script of your Five Modules so I can insert it into my LCWO text to CW conversion for MY learning module per you other lessons remember (IN THIS ORDER) consistency. I really appreciated your "Anatomy of a CW QSO" This makes so much sense. and should be printed out in LARGE BLOCK LETTERS and nailed on the wall of every shack, in direct line of sight of the resident OM as a REMINDER of what we "SHOULD DO" VE6LX
EXPLAIN "C C H C C" Thanks ve6lx
Excellent advice for the Newcomer and a refresher for som old timers. I would even suggest this to be written up in CW on a card in front of the new operator. Having the Script written out in BOLD letter in front of the operator may remove some of the initial operational fear. For the Old Timers it is a reminder we may not of had this guidance when we started after getting off of the ark.
So , you slowed down to a slower speed to match the other op , but you still sent the character at a faster speed . Why ?
You head copied all of that? 🤯
As someone who it 1 week into CW, I really appreciate the letter and word spacing you're using

That was all very well explained. I think your approach of sending fast charakters with longer spacings is the definite way to go. Thank you for your time and effort!
Thanks for posting your videos, Chris. 73, Frank
Thanks, great video Chris! Pity I can't give more than one thumb up!
Wonderful video
Thank you
Hey, move over! de N3JT
Thank you
Very nice place to live
Great video. Good Life 🙏🏻
Perfect.
Beautiful place my friend! 73!
Really breathtaking! Would love to see more of that tower you’re putting up! :)
Well...since you asked! A friend from the WWDXC (Western Washington DX Club) sold me his US tower MA-550 crank up tubular tower. He'd been running a 4 element Steppr on top, but I'll be using a 5 band spider beam just to be safe. We get these crazy 40 MPG wind gusts up there so going a lighter antenna will make me sleep better. This will be a completely remote station that I will be operating from my home QTH in Seattle. I can't put up a tower in Seattle for many reasons so this is my solution. I run a Flex 6600 and we have fast cellular internet there...
Dear Chris, very nice thank you for sharing. You have a beautiful family and home. God Bless
Just beautiful! Thank you for sharing such pleasurable scenery. You definitely put the right music to the video.
Thanks for the video, Chris. <BT> stands for “back throw” from the old days of copying on a mill. It means we’re going to a new line (Fort Devens 1961).
I don’t understand why is HW?, sent at end of every exchange?
Really love these videos! Thanks!
? Why did you end each time with, HW CPY?,?
I get for the first exchanges but why on all the exchanges?
It's a bit trickier than it looks. The main thing about iambic is learning to let the dits complete themselves instead of wacking them individually. Also the double squeeze and release making the C. You have to learn to get the keyer do most of the work and there are many who still do the dits on some letters individually.
Nice software 😊
Thank you for your wonderfully bingeable videos
Just completed Intermediate and very disapointed that head copy just not coming to me. I can work 12 wpm with a pencil but stuck there. I found my keyboard skills hold me back with the software. I don't really feel the contest software has helped, and the skills learned with LCWO are not transfering over to help with copy on air.
You will get there I'm pretty sure. Don't give up. I used to practice at 25-30 wpm. Feilrate was high.... but still.... I got to know the sounds.
@geirha75 just tried to get on the air at 12-13wpm, but just can't copy what's being sent. But all the software practice shows I should be 18wpm.
You guys are always welcome to retake the Intermediate class again, or just sit in whenever you can. Daily practice is the key when mastering any language. You really can't miss a single day of practice when you're in the Intermediate class. I know life happens, so you might only be able to manage 10 mins, but even that will keep you from getting behind. It's not easy! There just isn't a short way. I don't know my final student count for the Fall Semester. Email me: cdherter@gmail.com as we get to the end of August. Happy to have you in my class! And try to get on the air as often as possible, daily is best! Also happy to make a schedule for some online CW practice! Let me know!
@cdherter1 I have been doing daily practice for 3 years CWA and following CWA with their software for 8 months. I even took recordings for head copy practice on holiday so I would not miss a day. I have made no improvement.. The classes are great fun but the software practice just is not really helping. Also the recorded material for head copy has not helped me.
there is always a way! Text me at (206) 948-5892 and let’s chat!
218!!! I'm certainly not saying that it's impossible, but for heavens sake! Is this young man a savant or did he begin at an early age? Lol. Truly amazing that the human brain can make sense of this... I can not, for the life of me, make out a single character of what was being presented. My goal of 25 wpm seems embarrassing after watching this clip. Thanks for sharing! 73 DE KN6UIZ
Great Video Chris, hpe to See more of them
I really enjoyed your video! I am in Northern Idaho (Near Spokane) so I hope to work you sometime on 40m or possibly 80m. I am practicing more and trying improve my CW skills so I appreciate your effort making videos! 73
Can a three digit city code be used for the qth? Las Vegas-LAS?
This was a lightbulb moment for me , thank-you.
What a great video sir. Serious and informative to the point. Many thanks!
No chance, even wid 0.25 speed. 73
I know all the letters and number but by the time I’ve decoded a word, the stream is two or more words ahead. Even at 7 or 8 wpm word-rate I never get a sufficient number of words to even guess the message. (Doesn’t help that I’m 76, with life-long ADHD. Very frustrating-after a year on this. So throw me as many letters as you please-35 wpm letter-rate. If you like. I’ve got ‘em.)
Really good and helpful video. TU 73 es 77
Fluent at 5 words per minute? Haven’t reached that yet-and I’ve been at this for a year. Doesn’t help that I’m 76. Oh, I can recognize individual letters/numbers sent at a letter-rate of 30 wpm but for a string of words I’m always one to two or three words behind. Of course this ruins my copy because while I’m processing a word I completely miss two or three following words-even at a word-rate of 5 wpm. (All head-copy; trying to avoid the dreaded 10 wpm “plateau.”) Also it’s difficult to practice with 5 wpm text because the ARRL Code files always include prosigns and punctuation, even in slow speed text. Who but the ARRL would include Morse for a “COMMA” in 5 words per minute code?! And apparently no one sends on-air Morse at anything close to 5 wpm. I laugh when I see the admonition for “Slow Speed Contest” participants to go no faster than 20 wpm(!). 20 words per minute is the old Extra requirement, a level which thousands of “Advanced” licensees and would be “Extras” never reached. Did you notice the Advanced Test has disappeared? General-to-Extra is much more doable than 13-to-20 wpm. I’ll just keep on with single letters drills until I conquer instant recognition-it’s going to be a while.
Christian, what is the "possible" source for the discontinued SHURR Key that you show/mention?
Excellent tutorial. Thanks a lot. De G4ETV
I have joined the Longisland CW club to go from basics to advanced in a orderly fashion and thank you for replying to my post.
When I was in the Navy in the 70s we had a TTY to Morse code converter to send traffic to subs at 5 groups per min.
This is brilliant. tnx fer posting ! I am just starting out with cw and this is just what I needed. Tnx again. 73
A few comments for what it's worth. - if I receive an RST of 599 I prob would not repeat my QTH, name or WX Rig/Ant info. I assume they are receiving clearly and could come back with "?" if anything missed. If conditions are poor or I get a sense that operator is new then I would repeat as you suggest. - after contact established I would not repeat callsigns on every over...just end transmission with <BK> or "DE VE3WNS". Would only use full callsigns on first and last transmissions or to meet regulatory requirements. These are personal techniques that still fall within the basic structure you present which is spot on! 73 de Norm VE3WNS 2728
Your dits are sooo fast .For a beginner it's a tough sent to copy. The spaces between words are good but the letters fly out like AK-47
We call that "Farnsworth" technique, whereby the individual character speed is sent at 20-=25 WPM, but the spacing is adjusted to a slower speed. That fast character speed helps your brain begin to recognize each character as a single sound, rather than a collection of dots and dashes. It's called instant character recognition, and is what will get your code speed up to 20 WPM! If you're interested in learning about that, check out: www.cwops.org. Best, Chris. KF7WX
Hi,I am confused that I can follow the text on screen while you are senting but unable to follow and write what is written off air. I find it quite discouraging not being able to copy what is being sent off air do you have any ideas to help me to get on air or pointers in how should practice. 73' s from ZL1BMA David.
Play the video at 75% speed and listen with your eyes closed. I tend to see the letters coming up like a "ticker tape" in my mind's eye, but I'm sure there are other ways of head copying. Listen to text that you're fairly familiar with and don't be afraid to listen a few times. Repetition is the key to fluency. You'll start to learn the sounds of groups of letters and words and not just the individual letters. If you listen to lots of plain text morse, you'll find the letters "T H E" jump out like a single sound, in the same way CQ might do for you already. Look me to on QRZ as I might be doing a V2 of my online course, focusing on head copy. Good luck! Matt M0PTO
Hi David. How about joining one of our zoom classes? We're starting one up next week. Email me if you're interested or have questions. Also happy to chat real time. One of the other students is also a ZL. cdherter@gmail.com. Best, Chris. KF7WX
I am curious as to what speed we're you sending at on this clip.?
