Cold & wet 37°F morning starting my truck before the parade. Sure made a difference having a functional heater this year! Happy Veteran's Day 2021!

M813A1 first start with new turbo

This is the initial startup of my 5-ton after I added a BHT3B turbo and pulse manifold to the Cummins NHC-250 with all custom made parts. This was a very lengthy and involved project but the results were worth the effort; looks factory!

M813A1 with jake brakes activated by grenade shifter
Просмотров 2 тыс.4 года назад
This M813A1 with 855 small cam Cummins (NHC-250) has 3 jake brake heads installed. The grenade shifter has a built-in micro switch under the spoon to activate the jakes and the rotary switch on the dash selects LO (front & rear heads) or HI (all 3 heads). Truck is running its stock exhaust & muffler.
I owned an M35-A3.
@@bigastrofan1966 i drove one of those once before I got the M813. They look kinda funny but they're set up nice.
Does it start much different qkth the new turbo setup?
Sorry I thought this was before the turbo. Awesome truck
@@8.3leader15 , it starts exactly the same as it did w/o the turbo
Sounds nice, jus hearing that hmmmmm n jakes
Sounds good what turbo and what size exaust. Also what jakes you running
@@jeremyturgeon4493 That's all listed in the description. Schwitzer/BorgWarner 167050 5" exhaust 25B jakes
Nice
Amazing upgrade!! Planning on doing the same on my M818, any chance would you share where you sourced the switch and data plate?
The micro-switch is a Carling 110-SP. The rotary OFF-ON-ON switch is p/n 4776D from Erik's Military Surplus. The data plate i designed myself and had it custom made by a data plate shop. I might have an extra one on hand still...
As reliable a vehicle (of any type) that the Marine Corps ever fielded.
My coworker said the Corps was still using them when he joined up in 2003 and didn't let go of them till about 2011. A 40 year service life speaks volumes about the trucks' build quality!
They really were incredible. Much better than the 923s, and those were pretty dang good aside from the CTIS which gave some trouble on occasion. Many a young Marine actually learned how to drive stick on the 813. It was that easy to operate. If you got a 5-ton stuck somewhere, you shouldn’t have been there in the first place!
Love it! 🤩😂
Hwy 2?
Yep
Please add more videos!!! My kids love these!
The M8 series are definitely the best looking units out there.
That is cool. I know just enuf to be dangerous. How much boost? What is the change in pressure in the combustion chamber? Just curious. I have owned two dueces and two M923A2 and still belong in the MVCC in colorado.
14.5 psi is the most I've seen. No clue what chamber pressures are...
Purrs like a kitty!
Please make more video
Next project for mine, the turbo. Then a three stage jake 😊❤
The two best noise makers! I have both on mine and they are my favorite additions 😊
I remember working with the 6speed automatic transmission during testing in 1978 at APG Md. John and myself were the only GIs authorized to work on them. They were our babies. Ah, the memories.
Were you guys driving on a test track?

Nice! Did you do anything with the fuel buttons ? Also where can I find one of these exhaust manifolds?
Yes, eventually I changed to a #17 button. The upgraded pulse manifolds with the long bolt spacers can be found at many big rig suppliers and even some ag parts suppliers. This one was from PAI Industries
Whats the top speed in this baby?
They say about 72 mph
does it have jake brake
Sure does; all 3 jake heads are on there

What all did you have to change?
Everything on the exhaust side of the engine, the intake side of the engine, the coolant reservoir location, and lots of little stuff.
@@m809er ok, I'm guessing might be little easier for mine, because I have Cummins 250;in m925, I'm looking into putting turbo on it. Thanks
@@staym925 , on a 925 you have enough hood clearance to use a factory Cummins crossover pipe and aftercooler unless you want to use an MRAP intercooler or go non-intercooled like I did.
@@m809er that's what I was thinking, I wasn't plan on going with intercooler, but few have told me it would be a wise choice, I think I'll get parts on and see where stand, maybe put one on.

what kind of cruising speed and top speed does your truck can do?
The engine is governed at about 2150 rpm so the top speed is about 56 mph.
@@m809er Cool thanks
With 52" tires the top speed would be 70 mph, but that is beyond the tire's speed rating
I miss driving my dad's m35-A2
Very Nice setup
Is the transmission synchronized or non
2-5 are synchro'd...don't recall if 1st is or not
That's a beautiful sound of the roaring 250 Cummins diesel engine
I'm on SS and followed your build. This is the sound of Liberty.
Hey, fellow M813 owner here. Dumb question- on the rear and intermediate axles, is the flange cap attached/part of the axle when you remove it, or are they two separate pieces?
The rear flange is an integral part of the axle shaft (1-piece). When you pull it out it is attached to a shaft thats about 3 feet long with about a 2" diameter.
@@m809er perfect, thanks.
Is this the large cam version of the 250?
This is the small cam version (2" cam journal vs 2.5"). The Big Cam engines came in the M916/M920 family of trucks
@@m809er I may be getting a M813a1 here in the future and The first thing I wanna do is turbo it. I’ve read that the intake crossover doesn’t clear the hood,Did you custom make your intake pipe or just route it a different way? I see you have a second air filter housing on the passenger side. Also, did you source a different exhaust manifold? Looks to be a few out there that allow the turbo to bolt on.
@@USNENFTS The factory cross over doesn't clear so a custom cross over has to be fabbed up or cut through the hood like @bobbed_deuces_wild did to his M813. Go to steelsoldiers.com and search for thread 'My M813 gets a turbo' as well as other turbo build threads. Guys have been adding turbos for at least 10 years so lots of good info there.
@@m809er okay will do! Thanks man!
@m809er3 how much did it wake up the old girl? Any help with top speed?
What year is this one?
1981
Did you like the power gain? I was thinking to run 16.00r20s and have been told the turbo helps but the 250 is still not a race horse. What were your thoughts?
I like the increase - you don't feel it in the seat-of-your-pants, but I don't really slow down on the hills. It feels like going from a loaded truck to an empty truck. I added the turbo to make up for 1600r20s in the future.
What set of Jakes did you use ?
They're Jacobs model 25B, but the hard to find 425A's would have also worked.
@@m809er I have a set of 30E’s
The 30E should work if your turbo has a single entry (without a center divider). Looks like they were used on Big Cam I engines...
@@m809er I have a pulse type manifold, and a low rise. I have 3 turbos, but doubt anyone is ideal for my 250.
@@jimferguson1048 I'm also running a pulse manifold and I'm using a single entry 26cm turbine housing.
Getting ready to turbo my M925a1
Sweet! You would even have room for the factory Cummins aftercooler and crossover tube.
@@m809er I installed a MRAP radiator/intercooler already for the turbo swap.
What turbo are you running ?
It's a BorgWarner Schwitzer BHT3B (p/n 167050)
@@m809er what was your expected HP increase?
@@Superthermal I'm expecting it to be in the 290-315 range. Cummins made a turbo kit for the NHC-250 to reduce smoke and it added 40 hp and the dual fuel mod is said to add 10% more hp. So on a good day 250+40+25= 315. I'm not after big numbers since I don't have oil squirters for the pistons.
Did you put your phone on the ladder?
That's a trade secret...
Did you plug the intake ports in the heads or you just running it as is?
Sorry for the late response, but when I removed the rocker boxes to add the jake brakes I found that the pirt were already plugged off so I was good to go.
