As a bee keeper and gardener I'm told Neem oil kills bees. I heard you said to use it on squash plants. Coul you confirm yea or ney on the Neem Oil please!!
Neem oil can be toxic to bees if not applied correctly. While some say that neem oil is non-toxic to bees and other pollinators, others say that it can be moderately toxic. Here are some tips for using neem oil around bees: *Apply at the right time Apply neem oil when bees are not usually out foraging, such as in the late evening, night, or early morning. *Avoid spraying directly on bees While adult bees are unlikely to be harmed, spraying neem oil directly on bees can hurt the larvae and juveniles in the hive. *Use a proper ratio A recommended ratio for a DIY neem oil spray is one part neem oil to 133,000 parts water. *Be aware of potential side effects Neem oil can suffocate bees when sprayed, and the azadirachtin in it can disrupt their reproductive cycles if they ingest it through plant roots. Neem oil is a naturally occurring pesticide that can help control pests and diseases like aphids, mites, beetles, leafhoppers, powdery mildew, and root rot.
I've pretty much given up bringing my plants in the garage or inside the house every time it goes to the 30's. I will just get this greenhouse. But we do get a lot of hail here in Tx... I'll just make sure I tarp it... Thx for the info on the temp range.
I fought a "weed" in my newly purchased home that had a lovely garden out back. This "weed" was insanely hearty & VERY stubborn! As soon as it poked through the dirt and I saw a bit of green, out I came with my shovel and I would dig as deep as I could and no matter how deep I went I could never get the main root! It took 7 YEARS!!! Seven years of digging this up every time I seen it poking through. Then about 2 years after being successful, I was in a greenhouse and as I went through the check out, there, sitting on a display shelf was my "weed" in a bucket and they wanted $15 for it! I dang near started crying. Lol I asked what it was and of course I now know it be horseradish! So I would be surprised if you got rid of it easily the next year. There is a reason they say to be 100% certain on the location before you plant it. I understand why! Lol Did you have any horseradish in the garden in that spot the next year? I am very curious! 😉
I uncomfortably laughed at this as I read your comment. This is season number 3 of the "weed" battle. In fact I just harvested one and made a horseradish garlic mayo for some roast beef sliders.
@@Betterterra Lol I figured you would be fighting the "weed" battle for a few years too. I am not exaggerating, it took me 7 years. You caught it early, so hopefully it won't take you that long. Actually, maybe you can help me with another question that just came up. I no longer have my own plant but a farm I pass by often has a ton of it in his pasture/yard. I approached him and he said I could help myself to as much as I want. There is an insane amount! The homeowner didn't even know what horseradish was much less he has a ton of it. Lol So I hope to go harvest a bunch over the next week or so but recently was told that if the root isn't from the same growing season it will be woody. The horseradish I found likely hasn't been harvested in a very long time for reasons I won't go into. What are your thoughts on harvesting some of this root veg? Do you think I am wasting my time and money to do so?
Chickens love grubs!!!
Mine didn't grow any stalks.
What do you mean by stalks? The horseradish that you harvest is the main tap root that grows under the soil.
Thank you for the video. It confirmed that it was okay for me to struggle with my installation. Even though I have a different model of greenhouse from hell, I know that it n two years - I will tear this one down and build a greenhouse out of cedar like I was going to do. My Outsunny model had All slide and tighten bolts. I lost it half way though and went rogue with the drill. I have put together a lot of complicated things Ian my life and have even built 3 cedar sheds- this was almost an impossible assembly
Love your garden show 😊
Keep the frame and buy some clear plastic roofing panels from home depot or Lowes and cut to fit for roof and keep your greenhouse 🤷♂️
That was a thought that I considered, but with us moving cross country pretty soon this was planned to get sold locally. But due to the timing and insurance covering to replace it, it was easier to just scrap.
Love your show!!!
We need an update...did the root growth from bottoms of bags make new plants?
OH yes. It has been a battle ever since. Be careful.
@@Betterterra I've started my "horseradish adventures " this yr also. But I am absolutely hating the grow bags. They dry out in my zone 8b heat fast. Have to water min 2x a day in heat above 80F
Ok forgive my ignorance here. Won't many of the nematodes be killed going through that sprayer? I was thinking of a watering can instead. Thoughts?
They are microscopic and buffered by the water. Also there are millions of them. War by attrition.
Your presentation on video show is great do more shows like that concerning compost
You're lucky you got that just kidding out when you did. I was about to dip out of this video. Great information, glad I stayed. Looking forward to watching more of your videos now.
Glad you stayed and thanks for the view. I'm working on new content as we speak.
My biggest confusion is why some say grow the root for 2 yrs or so then , in all I read says don't grow more than a year or so bc it will become woody....so what is correct?
I think the first year is smaller and more tender than older roots. You're always going to have more than you know what to do with.
They also lay eggs on the stems of leaves and sometimes on the spines of the leaves themselves. You will know when there is pink crusty stuff on the leaves or stem vines the same as it appears on the actual plant vine leading to the stem.
Get a BLUNT syringe needke anywhere from 14 gauge to 18 gauge. I use both 16 and 18 gauge 1.5" blunt needles BECAUSE I POKED MYSELF ONCE. A thinner needle will also clog faster. You WILL clog some up to the point where they are useless so get extras. I typically have to poke all the way through then back the needle back out some and slowly inject to ensure some drips down the inside center of the vine and when enough of it drips out the other side I feel confident that I got enough inside the stem. Also INJECT SLOWLY because sometimes it will spray out the hole or another hole (the one the borer bored into) and squirt you in the face or the eyes. Ask me how I know, or don't. You'll figure it out. I hate needles and syringes, but if I had not purchased these and plenty of extra needles, a whole lot of my pumpkins and melon plants would not be alive and thriving as they are this year. My very first successful year growing pumpkin. I planted some early to learn more this year about them having failed in the past and I now have 3 ready to harvest, another 3 between 2 and 4 weeks to go before they are ready and several more plants that should be ready around October. I plan to can the pumpkins that are ready now and in the near future. If you buy BLUNT needles and touch the end where a regular needle would puncture your skin, the blunt won't even prick you. BUT with blunt syringe needles AND sharp needles, some will clog up. Another thing i now do to avoid wasting needles is to use one that already got clogged and is otherwise useless to poke a hole in the vine with that one before inserting the new or unclogged syringe in order to lower the chance of ruining/clogging another needle. This also helps me gauge how far in to go. The first time you do it, you will have trouble squirting the BT inside the vine (most likely) you have to figure out where the hallow part inside the stem is in order to be able to inject or lack of an airway will prevent you from being able to squirt the stuff. If you don't have the end in the hallow portion, it would be like placing your finger over the end and trying to squirt it out or trying to turn your water hose on while you cover the garden hose firmly with your palm, So, I simply go all the way through, then back up slowly until I am able to discharge and if a little runs out the other side, I know most has gotten inside where the borer will be eating. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to try to help others save money and not buy the wrong kind and sized needles like I did. I also use both a 5ml and 10 ml syringe size. I have little hands so mostly I use the 5 ml syringe. The 10 ml syringe is obviously, about twice as long as the 5ml size and thicker.
I planted my horseradish in my 4x2 foot raised metal beds that have felt type liners. It pushed right through the liner.
It is tenacious for sure
Please edit it and shorten your videos. 2/3 of your content can be removed and be just as effective or more so.
Thanks RUclips expert.
Mauro, that’s one of my pet peeves. I always use the speed up option on videos like that, and it’s a life saver. However, gardening videos are their own animal. I prefer them being slow, detailed, and relaxed - just like gardening itself, haha.
Are there Nematodes that eat bigger Nematodes?
There are some predatory nematodes that seek others "bad-nematode" like the one that target plant roots.
@@Betterterra thats the problem i have , everything i planted in the ground this year all roots turned brown, Grubs ate all the roots,
I hate them so much 🤬
I need to get me a bottle of BT because they attracted my pumpkins, one died and the other 2 are holding on for deer live
Thanks for watching and good luck.
Little bastards 🤦🏻♀️ thanks for the info. Will definitely be covering my bases.
Early defense is the best practice.
@@Betterterra just sprayed a little neem oil waiting for my BT jic
@@BetterterraWOW that's a lot of work and maintenance for just saving a couple of zuchinnis.... I'll just grow peppers and corn next year....
I received some horseradish plant from a friend. Do I have to wait 2 years to harvest root for fire cider? Thanks
I don't think that's necessary, as you can see in this video I got a really good harvest after one year. I would imagine you might get bigger roots if you wait 2 years, but not required. Just be very careful of where you plant your horseradish, I can't stress enough on how invasive it is. I will come up year after year no matter how much you try to dig it up. If you look in this video ( ruclips.net/video/JKRVXe8rYCg/видео.html ) I show how much it has taken over a section of my garden 2 years later and it is from roots penetrating the bottom of my container that I sat in the garden. Be Mindful and you'll get horseradish for ever.
Shade cloth combined with the beeswax venting can help lower the temps inside. You really had hail :P Impressive damage. Considering the price and usage, you got your money's worth. Informative video, nice work! Good luck if you go bigger.
Thanks for the tips!
FYI a tarp or sun shade can help solve the high temp issues
so what your saying is buy glass green house not polycarbonate :) Good tip on caulking, and 4x4 built frame.
Understandable , watching youtube is fun , making youtube video.....not so much. I know ive made 66 videos , and time invested is not always reflected with results , a video that took me 3 days to make only got 1k views , but a video that took me 6 minutes to make got 72k views.... Either way cool video bro, wish you the best of luck
Thanks for the comment and the understanding.
Nice video ❤
Thanks for the visit
As someone who bought a house with a garden, I would have loved it if the person who put it in had left garden instructions for the next owners!
Well that does it, I'm writing a manual. "The beginner's guide to THIS garden".
East Coast for life, baby!
Hope you post more videos.i just found your channel and it is great.
Yea no thanks!
You need 131 to 151 for 72 hrs or 151 to 161 for 48 hrs or 161 to 171 for 24 hrs to kill weed seeds and pathogens. These temps are for the center of your compost pile. All parts of you pile need to reach these temperatures, thus you need to turn your pile in a manner that facilities this. Dr Ingham method
Thank you for those details.
Very well done with all instructions and explanations on how to use nematodes. Lots of details and very easy to understand. Thank you sir!
You're very welcome!
Nice work overall. Clear communication and good quality audio. I'd would have like you to show exactly how you folded and fitted the hardware cloth. Also, I'm shocked that you could work with the hardware cloth without gloves. Your hands must be tough! But, the music is horrible and totally unneccesary!
I completly agree about the music. It was early in my process and lessons learned. Thanks for the feedback.
What do you suggest for cucumber beetle?
I normally start with a neem oil spray about once a week. That usually does a good job to prevent the cucumber beatles and the squash bugs. If they break through these defenses, then I resort to using "Seven". Not my favorite choice, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made.
@@Betterterra thank you! It's either i find a solution or i can't bother to try to grow them anymore which would be sad. There's no sense growing a plant for 2 months just so I can die before I get any food
I'm covering my squash vines with garden soil and mulch this year as I trim. This is to cover the large holes left from pruning the old branches so the vine bore can't have much access to the vine. Wish me luck. I don't trust the BT injection. They say that stuff never leaves your body. My dad used to slice the vines open and remove the worm and then fill the cut/opening up with soil. He did this every year. I was too young to pay attention back then, but it must have worked.
I love hearing all the different solutions that folks have learned from our elders. I'll also have a look into the effects of BT a little further. Thanks!!
What specifically in the BT did you 'doesn't leave the body'? BT is a natural bacteria found in soil naturally but in a more concentrated solution. Bacteria is eradicated by our stomach acid so not aure what in the BT stays in the body
You can use Neem oil instead of Bt, I have also heard it does not leave the body or the soil. It kills the borers and is safe for humans, people have used it for health purposes for centuries. And it makes a great fertilizer as well.
I had grub worbs that ate my whole yard.l put the beneficial nematodes down and 4 years with no grubs. Now lm going to put more down
That so awesome!!
Thank you!!! QUESTION DO U do this to your watermelon s and cucs ? Should I do this to watermelon and cucumbers? ???
I've never had an issue with vine borders on my cucs, cucumbers beatles are the problem there. I haven't grown watermelon in many years, sorry. Thanks for the questions.
@@Betterterra I was just out inspecting every leaf. I could possibly look at lol on all of them Unfortunately, found one on Cuc 🙄 And 1 on sugar, baby watermelon ugh Last year a couple here or there but mainly on zucchinis I order bt and syringes should be here today I grow in stand container beds So luckily all plants are at standing level…. But unfortunately they are sneaking when they hide there eggs
Why is there music?
Mistakes were made.
The Melittia Cucurbitae will lay eggs anywhere on the plant. From the V of the leaf on down. If you spray the lower stem they will just move up and lay eggs on the stem of the leaf. Which makes it a little easier to catch the worm from making it down to the main stem and kills the plant. Where I live the Moth has two cycles starting in early April and is gone by August so I have learn to wait until August to plant out my summer squash. Winter squash is still a fight to keep alive and protect from the Melittia Cucurbitae and it's lava.
Your background music is TOO loud!
Where do you get those nematodes?
www.arbico-organics.com/
Brilliant
I got the Lean-to and these are the most useless instructions I've ever seen. What do I use the brackets for on the wall panels???
I don't know which brackets that you are referring. I'm sure the lean-to version is different than this version.
@@Betterterra It is, and the directions seem even more useless. Couldn't find anybody putting together my model either. I think I got it figured out. They're small M shaped metal rods that go between the wall pieces and the frame to secure the walls in place. Most infuriating, and yet simple little things.
What did you end up doing for the floor?
I made a floor, framed with 4x4 treated posts and laid cedar fence panels as the flooring. Heavy enough that I never had a problem with wind.
Great video, I’ve never seen a better defense. I’ll try both.
Dont understand why water surely they will sweat and rot
Shouldn't apply on sunny days.
