Bamboo Proa - Episode 01
Просмотров 31 тыс.3 года назад
This is a series of videos demonstrating the building of a bamboo, pacific proa. Both processed and raw bamboo is used in its construction, together with fiberglass and "green" epoxy resin. I hope you enjoy the process as much as I have. I have been using bamboo in modeling, rod making, spar making, and bowmaking for many years. I thought I knew a thing or two. I see now I knew nothing about the material! This is by far the single most usefully informative treatment of the topic i have ever seen. Well done. And thank you.

    Wow that's beautiful. I wouldn't care if floats or not. Some people like building out of original or natural materials. Others build traditional craft from carbon fiber. Bamboo is sort carbon fiber in a sense.

    Great project, please consider having a look at ruclips.net/video/GSBh77bjz_Q/видео.html (Advoko MAKES RUclips channel) he describes a method for recycling plastic bottles which would be perfect (possibly superior) for the binding material you are using on your Proa consruction.

    Well done video. I had just dug up my copy of Dierking's book and was contemplating the possibilities of a stitch and glue hull when I decided to search videos. Best of luck with your bamboo version. It's beautiful. How heavy is it at this stage? Are you planning to use bamboo yards for a crab claw rig?

    Excellent, Adi keep up the good work 👍🙂 did you think of bending them over a trench of charcoal? Perhaps you could have done them all at once and been able to go off returning to lower them as the coals burn down, my concern would be needing to turn them for even heat

    • @aquasol2121
      @aquasol2121 3 года назад

      Thanks Kev, yes that's how its done traditionally, they also pour hot sand into the culms to avoid kinking the bends.

      Thanks for the recommendation John. My fascination for the Proas came from watching a video series by Buckminster Fuller called "everything I know " The full series I don't think is on RUclips any more but I found a transcript of where he describes the water people and Proas. His insights are remarkable. I recommend starting at www.bfi.org/about-fuller/resources/everything-i-know/session-4 then scroll daown to Part 6 and read from there :)

    How do you bended the bamboo yakos to be connected in that smoth curve to the ama? Your job is incredible, but the hull isn't too flexible?

    • @aquasol2121
      @aquasol2121 3 года назад

      Many thanks, in the next video I will show how to bend the bamboo. I use a heat gun and a simple jig to hold the shape and then fiberglass. I have just got to finish editing it, so hopefully this weekend I will post.

    Great stuff Adrian, many thanks for sharing. Is it just one layer or bamboo? amazing to think how light this is going to be.

    • @aquasol2121
      @aquasol2121 3 года назад

      Yes I used just the one layer of bamboo with fiberglass on both sides. but it is very flexible. I have bulkheads at 30cm intervals that are filled with PU foam and that provides the additional support required. To build a larger craft it likely require more layers of bamboo and fiberglass.

      Thanks James, my inspiration to build a proa was partly influenced by your trip to Rapa Nui :) I'm a complete novice at this, a good person to ask is Rael Dobkins, he has built several and is currently on his 4th build I think. • @aquasol2121

      Yes its quiet ingenious and fortunately once the volcanoes become dormant the replanted planted bamboo tolerates the ash as long as it gets regular rainfall.
