Thanks a lot for wonderful lecture series on AGN's. I have a question that how do we differentiate BL Lac and FSRQ based on emission Line spectra. From literature survey I found that BL Lac do not show emission line in their spectra but FSRQ does and we also know that a both type of sources are situated at some positional region where jet is alined to line of sight of the observer. Now my question is, what are the possible reasons that we are seeing emission lines in one spectra but not in other even in the unification model they have the approx. same position and could you suggest any references for this query?

This is still a topic of active research - see arXiv:1904.05898 and arXiv:1112.5162, and the references cited therein, for examples of recent discussion on this topic.

Hello, Dr. Brandt. Thanks for the great lectures! Are there any more recent books on AGNs that you would recommend other than Dr. Netzer's?

    • @nielbrandt4268

I think the Netzer book is still quite good and relevant. I would still recommend this, and would then supplement with more recent review articles.

Hi Professor Brandt, At the 5:16 mark, you mentioned that in the near future we will be able to retrieve AGN redshifts from X-ray data. Could you further explain these pursuits? Do you have any references to literature on future facilities that will tackle this? That is very exciting (a bit hard to believe, though). Thank you.

I will put some relevant references following. A future facility that will tackle this is ESA's Athena X-ray Observatory - can use Google for details on it. See arxiv.org/abs/1209.0916 and arxiv.org/abs/1403.2491 and arxiv.org/abs/1807.01782
