That is exactly how I feel. I do not understand how the keepers can ignore Donut's condition and the fact that he is so hungry, not getting enough to eat and getting so thin. I am trying very hard to find a way to rescue him.

Yes, some more than others. Donut's sister, Aoba, who lives at Nagasaki Bio Park communicates a lot ultrasonically, outside the range of human hearing. Some of the vocalisations are contact calls to keep in touch with the rest of the herd.

Not where I come from. Not true in most Western countries. That is probably true in Japan where most people do not understand animals.

Nagasaki Bio Park capybara enclosure could not be more different than Aso farmland. Aso is a small petting zoo where all the different species live together in a small enclosure with a concrete floor and a very shallow, smallish pond. Nagasaki Bio Park was created in the mid-1980s by people who understood capybaras and cared about them. The enclosure used to be twice as large as it is now and included grazing then. It is still fairly large with a huge pond with 3 islands to which the capybaras can escape if they want to get away from people. There are other areas off-limits to humans to which the capybaras can escape. There are trees and bushes and a tiny bit of green vegetation on the islands. Quieter, other capybaras with established many years long relations, places to hide and be away from visitors, very slightly better food (though still not great). Biopark certainly isn't the ideal choice but between Aso and Biopark (if those are the only two options), Biopark is likely better.

People who created the capybara enclosure at Nagasaki Bio Park, which opened in 1985, understood capybaras and their needs and cared about them. The original enclosure was twice the size it is now and included grazing. Aso farmland is built on concrete which is completely unacceptable.

Aso farmland is owned by Nagasaki Bio Park but it is a separate zoo 3 hours drive away. I am not sure if the chief animal keeper at Nagasaki Bio Park has any influence over the well-being of the animals at Aso farmland but there is a head keeper at Aso farmland so it would be worth contacting Aso farmland. Yes. He was 70 kg in 2023 but he has lost a bit of weight. Being so large he needs a lot of food and most keepers do not understand that!

I understand exactly how you feel. I believe it is worth writing to Nagasaki Bio Park and Aso farmland. They may not do anything but it increases the pressure on them. There are some Animal Welfare groups on Facebook but whether they can help I'm not sure. The capybaras at Aso are suffering so much, as you will see in the video I am putting up tomorrow on my Capybara World channel. Something has to be done and eventually we will succeed.

Thank you Andrey for all your support. I am not going to let Donut's suffering be in vain. There has to be a way to save him. In most European countries it would be so easy. There would be an Animal Welfare officer who I could turn to. But in reality zoos like Nagasaki Bio Park and Aso farmland could not exist in European countries, as they are now. They would have to adopt Animal Welfare practices and have a management which cared about their animals.

Yes, unfortunately the cut in his upper lip with his front teeth showing does deter some people and frighten them, especially children. Fortunately, the female capybaras were not so superficial in their reaction to Donut and they all wanted to be with him. He IS a very good capybara. He was a very wise charismatic leader and he looked after Zabon's babies when she was suffering emotionally and physically. It is too cruel what the Biopark has done to him and I am determined to find a way to save him.

Yes he was just like his mother, Momiji, who was the most brilliant mother. Just one more reason why was so cruel and ignorant to send Donut away from his home.

Yes I am getting very worried about him. I don't understand how the keepers can ignore his condition. But Japan is a "rules-based" society and probably there are no rules to give older animals the extra food they need.

Yes he has and I am really worried about this. I have written to Aso and Nagasaki Bio Park with the scientific information about elderly animals but the Bio Park refuses to listen to me which is heartbreaking but also unacceptable

This is a blog I wrote about why Donut, Syrup, Whip and Ryosuke were sent to Aso farmland. At Aso Donut is not getting enough to eat and he is getting too thin. I have written to Nagasaki Bio Park and Aso farmland asking them to give Donut the food he needs with a link to the scientific research explaining why older animals need more food and more nutrition. Several other people have also written very polite, charming letters asking that Donut gets the food he needs but the Bio Park ignores us. 4. I wish you could come and visit Donut and give him lots of food and try to communicate with the keepers. He is so special and he doesn't deserve having to live at Aso farmland

The capybaras at Nagasaki Bio Park are surprisingly sensible in not eating things which are bad for them! Thank you for your suggestion about arranging deliveries from a vegetable market but I'm not sure even a Japanese person living near Aso and a nearby market could achieve that

They do give him some but not nearly enough. The capybaras have to rely far too much on what the visitors buy to feed them. Donut gets much less food from the visitors because he is old doesn't react as quickly and he spends a lot of time sleeping - I believe that is his way of coping with the stress of living at Aso farmland. I have written to Aso and to the chief animal keeper at Nagasaki Bio Park with a link to the scientific research that older animals need more nutrition and more food than younger adult animals because their digestion is not as effective. They do not appear to be willing to give Donut the extra food he needs.

I wish that was true. It was a promotion for Nagasaki Bio Park

The truth is that it was a promotion by Nagasaki Bio Park to make people think that the capybaras they sent to Aso farmland were having a good life

Yes I completely agree. Any food that Donut gets is desperately needed. He will eat anything he is so hungry. I saw a photo of Donut taken a few days ago and he is getting thinner. This breaks my heart and it kept me awake at night but it also makes me very angry as I wrote to Aso, giving a link to the scientific research, showing that older animals need more food and more nutrition. And commenting on how thin Donut was getting and how he used to get extra vegetables at Nagasaki Bio Park. I believe they have completely ignored me. Which makes me want to cry I feel so helpless. We all feel so helpless

@CapybaraDonguri that is heartbreaking! Aso also completely ignored my message to them. That makes me even more frustrated of Donut being dependent of such rude and unprofessional people.

Yes, I thought he looked as if he would eat Anything anything at all that might be food and I Agree, he is very passive Not so much to live for but trying to sleep as sleep is an escape.

No, they are very stressed at Aso. It is a measure of how little anyone at Nagasaki Bio Park understands capybaras and capybara reproduction that they moved Donut, Syrup, Whip and Ryosuke. From an animal welfare and animal cruelty perspective it was completely unforgivable. I have videos showing each capybara's stress behaviours which I will be posting.

@@MrTyurikov If you are not subscribed to the Biopark main channel, the zookeeper from Biopark went over to Aso Farmland and gave Donut a pumpkin. It's nice to see Donut and his friends.

Yes the extra vegetables were just what Donut needed and he always ate them all, very hungrily, which shows that without these vegetables Donut was not getting enough to eat. Syrup's foot/leg was very painful because of the broken bone so it was not a sympathy gesture. I think Syrup came to view Donut as his protector and a capybara who he would like to emulate. It was a very interesting, one-sided relationship as Donut's interests were in the females. He liked to be on his own, just like his mother and sister do. He can never be on his own at Aso. As you say he is definitely not getting enough to eat at Aso. I will listen to a translation of what the keeper says on that pumpkin video. If he really is saying they don't get breakfast that is a scandal. If he is implying that they don't get breakfast because they are so keen to rush to greet the visitors to be fed, that is a downright lie. All 4 capybaras find Aso very stressful and Donut would definitely stay in his sleeping quarters all day rather than face the crowds both human and other species.

@@CapybaraDonguri I saw Whip shaking his head as Donut walked by. No matter the meaning or cause it's not a good indicator of physical or mental health. Donut has lost a lot of weight. I wasn't aware of Ora being gone but it's not surprising. I would like to meet the legend, Donut someday, so thanks. #JusticeforDonut

Ora, the tiny breeding male, was finally replaced when the breeding age females had not produced babies even after Donut and the other 4 were sent away. As you know I said that sending Donut away was needless and cruel and that Donut was not the reason the Bio Park had not had babies. The only good thing is that I now get a huge number of Japanese people coming to my Japanese language blogs because I was proved right about Donut. They tell me they no longer trust the Bio Park.
