I was a confirmed prog rocker until I saw Jess and the band in 1974 promoting his first Island solo album. I was a 16 year old glass collector in Quaintways in Chester. I was blown away by the live power of a brass section and a real.....proper... singer. The following day I was straight into Impact Records for the album. Jess heralded a turning point in my musical tastes into Graham Parker and Southside Johnny. Thanks Jess.

If you were a swotty white teenager in the 70s, Soul was a definite no-no. Most of my mates were into Genesis or ELP and were a tad disparaging about my preference for The Faces, and later on West Coast bands like The Doobies and Little Feat. Jess Roden was a bit more overtly purveying Soul and enjoying his band helped me to realise that in fact, I was an R&B fan; I never knew. By the time Parker, came along, I'd fully come to terms with this and was buying Otis Redding and Wilson Picket records in the secondhand shops. Incidentally, Chris Gower, who's blowing the storming trombone breaks on this vid, was later in the Rumour Brass. What a fantastic sound that two-man section made.
