    Очень интересно! Никогда не был в Зеленоградске, теперь хочу приехать. Маленькая поправка: по-русски кошек подзывают словами не "здесь-здесь", а "кис-кис". Эта фраза может звучать как "кис-кис", "кс-кс", "кыс-кыс", "кысь-кысь"... Кстати, есть такая старая марка ириса - "Кис-кис". Соответственно, на фантике нарисована кошка. Эти ириски продаются во многих магазинах. Но если просто погуглить "кис-кис", то на первых строчках будут ссылки про группу "Кис-кис", это такая молодёжная музыкальная группа.

    Thank you for this, it is very interesting and you have done a great job. You missed one important building: the beautiful Central Synagogue of Konigsberg was destroyed by the Nazis during Kristallnacht in 1938. The Russian government has carefully rebuilt it, and in 2018 it was reopened. It is now called the "New Synagogue", but is an exact replica of what the Nazis destroyed. Of course, the Jewish population is tiny now compared to before, because of the Holocaust, but that didn't stop the Russian government from righting the wrongs of that terrible night in 1938.

      @borschbandit 11 дней назад

      Oh wow! I wish I had known about that and made it to the Synagogue! I will definitely need to get back to that next time I'm in the city. That's an incredibly important piece of history. I'm very happy to hear that it has been rebuilt. I've pinned your comment to the top here so hopefully others will see it, thank you for sharing this. I may also share to my X/threads/bluesky accounts as well if that's okay.

    My friend, how old are you? You praise Lenin having no idea what was going on during his regime. Go and spend some times as a resident of North Coreea if you in love with Socialism. Spend some time in flats without or less heating. More time to spent to do the queue to wait and maybe buy some low quality food if you are lucky. Then read the newspapers full of Communist propaganda, banner on streets, workplaces full of the same content. Same thing goes on tv, radio. And still you cannot explain your frustration because you are afraid that somebody will turn you in and then you'll go to prison or Gulag.

    Yes, working class people were an integral part of the Soviet leadership, but by the end of the Soviet Union, the children of high-ranking party members received the same type of benefits and privileges that the children of empowered capitalists and right wing oligarchs obtained in other parts of the world. Unfortunately many of those devoted Communists did not survive the purges of Stalin. Today the new dictatorship of Vladimir Putin are setting up Russia and the Russian people for yet another historical disaster.

    I’m planning a trip to Kaliningrad on my UK passport. Is there an issue regarding being covered by travel insurance?, as the UK foreign office advises against all travel to Russia. I think the Irish government is the same? I heard that some specialist insurance companies will provide the cover though but for a price?

    • @borschbandit
      @borschbandit 15 дней назад

      @@ChrisCasseroles Both the British and Irish governments advise against travel to Russia. I didn’t listen to them and it was great! I had no issues whatsoever. I wasn’t interrogated or harassed, the border officials were professional and it was just like any standard border crossing. The only issue with the UK passport compared to the Irish (or other EU passports) is that the UK doesn’t qualify for the easy e-visa scheme, so you will need to acquire a standard Russian travel visa from the Russian embassy in Britain. Also, it’s my understanding that you will need to leave Kaliningrad oblast through the Lithuanian border, as Poland unfortunately will not allow non-EU citizens to cross back into Poland from Russia. Feel free to follow me on Instagram and reach out to me in DMs if you or anyone else needs anymore travel input from me.

    • @ChrisCasseroles
      @ChrisCasseroles 15 дней назад

      @ Thanks a lot. That’s very useful information, specifically not being able to cross back to Poland. My original question was more about travel insurance though. As it’s my understanding that insurance is invalid if the foreign office (whether British or Irish) advises against travel to a country. Would hate to be hit with a huge medical bill! I have heard that there may be specialist insurance companies that will provide it to Russia though, but presumably they charge extra. Will follow you on Instagram. I’m learning Russian also and have visited the country many times, but not since 2019.

    • @borschbandit
      @borschbandit 14 дней назад

      @@ChrisCasseroles Ah yes sorry. You will actually need to acquire Russian travel insurance to acquire the visa to enter the country anyway! Western-based travel insurance will not work, you're right. Its part of the the visa application process to quote your insurance policy you have purchased, so you will need that travel insurance before you apply for the visa. The travel insurance has changed a bit since I was there in April 2024, so I would check to see what options are available now. For example, I think the Russian insurance company Ingosstrakh was sanctioned this summer by the UK.

    In the USSR from 1922 to 1946, there were two main positions: the head of state - Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (president) and the head of government - Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars (prime minister). The head of state and essentially the ruler of the USSR from 1922 to 1946 was Kalinin. In the USSR, people affectionately called him "Grandpa," and in the West, he was known as the "Russian Peasant President," even appearing on the cover of Time in 1928. The head of government from 1922 to 1923 was Lenin, from 1923 to 1930 Rykov, from 1930 to 1941 Molotov, and from 1941 to 1946 Stalin. As we can see, there was a head of state and a head of government from 1922 to 1941. But there was also Stalin, who was the head of the party and the "leader." Only in 1941 did Stalin head the government, becoming the head of government. In 1946, the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR was renamed the Council of Ministers of the USSR, and the head of government was accordingly renamed Chairman of the Council of Ministers. It turns out that power in the USSR belonged to the prime minister, the head of government, rather than the head of state, as in Germany (chancellor and president). However, after Khrushchev's resignation, everything changed, and the head of the party became the head of the government to avoid holding enormous power and overseeing ministers. This is why Gorbachev was the president, not the prime minister of the USSR.

    Kalinin's career is not "impressive". His deeds are sickening. He co-signed the execution order to the mass murder of nearly 22,000 Polish officers in what became known as the Katyn Massacre. 'Katyn' has been blamed on the Nazi Germans over and over again, and this myth (lie) continues even today. Katyn was even shamelessly implemented in the Nuremberg Trials and innocent German POWs have been shot for this crime in the USSR. Signing the order made Kalinin a first degree desk mass murderer, and he is personally responsible for his criminal deeds, as were the other signees: Stalin, Beria, Molotov, Kaganovich, Mikoyan, Voroshilov. Still naming an area after a Stalinist mass murderer is a cruel thing, especially considering that it borders Poland, where sentiments concerning Katyn are still very high, since they have been lied to for centuries by their "Slavic brothers". Poles renamed it therefore Królewiec on their road signs. You will find copies of the signed execution order here: mythdetector.com/en/attempt-to-distort-the-katyn-massacre-2/ The document was found as a top secret piece in the personal archive of the Secretary General of the Communist Party, hidden forever and not to be published, until Yeltsin made it public to show the disgusting crimes of the CPSU and the NKVD. Kaliningrad should have been renamed long ago.
