I fought with my 26 spline Tremec with a dual disc clutch for 2 days, even removed the clutch to ensure the pilot bearing was the right size. Then... followed someones advice and was able to release the clutch using a 4 ft 2x2 and the trans fell right into place. That's my go-to method from now on.

I love modle T but this truck is sweet and if all out fails put a 4bt Cummins in it and call it a day lol great to have a compact truck with winch for many many things of needed done around area or property or pulling things out from somewhere

Is that year running hydraulic lifters, are they poo pood. How you getting fuel? Ive thrown a lot of time at 80's Mazdas and Mitsubishi truck 4cyl. motors. So frustrating. Vacuum leaks suck and are hard to trace on these beasts. Its like the worst era of smog additions.

In the first video you said you were told the head was from a 2.4L. From the information I've found it's a 2.2 or am I missing something?

I wonder if you are only hitting on the waste exhaust spark and the firing spark is not really working, if the ignition is working correctly you should see it flash twice per cycle. As someone else mentioned the balancer marks might be off, this would actually explain the intial bent valves. Someone rebuilt or swapped the engine got a balancer thats isn't correct and smacked a valve. Lastly a more simple explination, your timing was off when you set that valve lash, plus it's run a little, you might want to recheck that.

You're probably going to have to take the front of that engine apart and see if that crank pulley shared the key way or moved

I'm certainly no expert, but I've been fixin piles of crap for what seems like eons. :D That being said. I always start with compression, (your 720 seems to have plenty). Then electrical, then fuel. It might seem silly, but start with your Grounds. Going from other Japanese vehicles I've worked on. Should be one on the valve cover, one on the alternator frame, and I believe there is one that goes from the frame of the alternator to the voltage regulator mounting bolt on the cab sheet metal. Bad grounds can cause things like the coils, to fail, or the timing light to be intermittent. Remember, if you plan on doing any voltage test, to use the battery post, not the clamp. If that all checks out, I would turn my focus to the Distributater. Also, If you're on the fence about continuing the Datsun quest, check how well the videos on it are doing vs others. And see if it's worth continuing. Because as much as I love this truck series, I also want you to keep your lights on. :D

I feel your pain my friend as Datsun/Nissan are an absolute pain and have been known to jump timing on a perfect running vehicle and they are just that way. I know you probably saw that happen to old Puddin but his was the oil pump shaft jumping so maybe check that too.

I’m not sure it’s helpful. But 1995 Suzuki timing (think Geo Tracker) is timed off cylinder 4 not 1. Also & this is obvious I guess. But in my case, the distributor only turns 1/2 a revolution compared with crank. I fixed a few engines that were simply timed incorrectly. Just feeling your pain. Also - you need to jump a check engine plug to stop the computer trying to time itself. Suzuki things 🤦‍♂️ & also the joy. When a dead engine. Chugs back to life. 🙏🙏

i enjoy watching you work with the Datsun, i know its been a pain. i have a few old 80s nissans but non with a z24 engine, it sounds sort of like its not sparking at the correct time, and as others said it may have a rubber damper on the crank pulley thats slipped so marks are not right, ive seen that on some older nissan engines, i would get it to try to run like you have and see what happens if you leave distributor not locked down and just turn it slowly advance or retard and see if it changes at all. i do believe youve got timing marks correct mechanically, i dont know verbatim of that but it seems very "of nissan" to have that single cam engine how the camshaft dowel straight up with crank at 0*. best of luck buddy im anxious to see you get that Japanese heap going!

I’m not sure if you know this, but with all these Z and L series motors, there’s a shaft that drives the distributor and oil pump. It runs off the crank and sits in the timing case. When you put the oil pump in you have to time the shaft by lining a punch mark on the shaft gear up with another mark on the oil pump. The mark on the oil pump is a dot inside a long D shaped groove thing. There are diagrams and stuff online.

Look up. Pudden's fab shop he does these trucks all the time

When adjusting the cam gear are you turning the cam with it or just the gear

It sounds like the distributor is 180 degrees off

RAN BACKWARDS!!! Hey there… That was my first vehicle when I was 16 years old. I had a 1984 Datson/Nissan extended cab four-wheel-drive with that same Z 24 motor in it. Eight plugs four cylinders. This was in the 80s, so we were a little more reckless then, and I took that thing out and mudded it pretty good and blew out the transmission and the motor. Long story short, I rebuilt the transmission myself and the motor myself but when I first went to fire up, it ran pretty good. I got inside put it in first gear started to let out on on the clutch and it went backwards. I could not figure it out. I thought maybe I did something really wrong with the transmission. Again, I was 16 years old. It ended up that for some reason and somehow I had that motor running backwards. It had to do with the coils, plugs, and timing. That little rock backwards that you’re having is reminding me of that however it has been 38 years. Just figured I’d throw this out there that you’re not the only one that struggles with it.

I have one of these 720s which runs tip top. Let me know if you want to borrow my distributor, i think your problem is a worn out distributor with too much shaft play. It could also be worn out where the oil pump spindle goes into the distributor. To check to see if your timing chain is stretched, the slot on the cam gear (visible through one of the holes) should line up with the mark machined into the cam retainer, almost like a sight. If its to the left of it when eng is at #1 TDCyou will need to move the cam gear to position #3. Since timing chain is used, mark the link the #2 dot indexes to now and then when you put the #3 slot on cam dowel the #3 dot on cam gear will line up to that same link you marked.

I love this series, I feel like you are so close. I have a theory, and trust me I don’t know shit. I think you are so retarded on your timing that you are running on the exhaust spark. I think you need to go the other extreme with the timing to get on the spark you are supposed to be running on. I assume that’s how the double spark plug deal works.

You are playing both Charlie Brown and Lucy on this project. The T is a much better use of time and money. Actually, it's a fabulous subject. The Buick is a better use of money also. You already know that. There is a reason the following for those things include V8 swaps. The running production changes during that era were hard to comprehend. I worked for the corporation during the end of the 80s through the nineties. This isn't worth the time or money. Your channel is one of my " must see this week's episode" favorites. It's very relatable.

I feel your pain. Dont know anything about a Datsun engine, but does that thing have harmonic balancer like an old chevy small block with rubber holding the outter ring in place? Maybe the balancer outside ring is moving around on you?

I hope you can dig even deeper and get this figured out. It would be such a shame to have wasted your investment thus far. I know, sometimes you need to cut your losses, but I hope you get it figured out ... wish I could help, but I know nothing about this engine.

Switch to coil wires around at the module cuz it could be fine on the exhaust stroke 180 out from the head to the to the Pistons

Looks like you had spark jumping there about #2 or #3 on the intake side. It was right at the carb about midway when it was running on the last few minutes of the video. Might want to take a look back and check. You lose 1 out of 4 cylinders it will run rough

If it were me, I put it up for parts for a week or so then off to the scrap yard. It was abandoned for a reason. Good luck if you keep going, I'll keep watching.

Given the truck was essentially free, it's worth at least a couple grand to get it running and safe for the road. You can also save quite a bit buying used tires for it.

Given that the cam gear was off a tooth. I'll bet that's why the truck was parked. It's likely the timing chain was replaced incorrectly.

Wow dude, I am feeling for you on this one… but like so many other comments I’m thinking the distributor is messed up. The other comments on Puddin’s distributor issue are referencing his old 620 and the gear on the end of his distributor was slipping. Fortunately it had installation marks and he was able to line it back up and weld it to the shaft. I wouldn’t be able to let go but in situations like this I normally step away for awhile and work on something else while researching the problem when I can. So maybe you two just need to take a break!
