Gotta paddle into the wave first then stand up. He stopped way too soon and paid the price. You younger surfers should understand that super light weight boards with more than one fin can hang you in the lip on windy days.

This video is really good on mute. No sound. As for the wipeout, this is how not to surf. Common problem is, to get held up in the lip. He did catch the wave. I see the wave is pushing him. Then there's a point where he loses the wave, bc he slows down. This is when you need that one extra paddle. You must project yourself down the face quickly, full commitment, it requires full commitment which he has, I can see he is committed, but I'd argue there was a moment of hesitation. Once projecting downward, then you must bottom turn successfully, after you make the drop of course. Each step is important in itself. This was the classic case where you get held up in the lip so technically he never caught the wave. I thought he was going to simply miss the wave. Somehow he does manage to go over the falls.

Yes, these Hawaiian lifeguards are due some serious respect, but I wonder if they should be risking their lives for the arrogant haolies who are out there in dangerous conditions for the sake of pleasuring themselves? Try to imagine the grief inflicted on a young family when the lifeguard father loses his life trying to save a compulsive white guy who is too stupid to understand the danger he is in and the risk he is putting others in…kinda ironic, and not in a good way. And we’ve all been treated to the justification that so many of these big wave riders use to explain their compulsive manner…that they live for the adrenaline rush. That’s all well and good. So maybe the lifeguards should limit their own risk by restricting entry into the water during certain dangerous conditions.
