Sandy Beach Biggest Backwash I've Seen! High Surf Advisory May 20, 2024
Sandy beach Hawaii got slammed with a 7-10' south swell which reached high surf advisory status on Monday May 20, 2024. I've seen bigger and windier days for sure, but the angle on this swell caused the biggest backwash I've seen here yet. The blowhole was spraying sky high, guys were flying off the backwash and heavy barrels chomped down on the ones who risked it.

The first big waves of the winter arrived on the north shores of Hawaii and it was an XL swell measuring 40 ft. It peaked on December 2, 2020 with a higher than normal tide and washed over parts of the highways. On the biggest south swells surf spots that never break come to life in Waikiki. Some of the best waves I've ever had, South Shore, hurricane swell, 1992. That was a bad hurricane, of course, Iniki, turned at the last minute from O'ahu and took out Kauai. An ill wind, for sure.

@@slowly6119 Back in da day, I scored macking south swell with China Walls 10-12 + on a number of occasions over the years. Bummahs da macker south swells are rare !! As a kneeboarder, I rode BLAST Kneeboards made by Alan McCray on Sunset Pt at Backyards out Country. My big wave board wuz 6'3'' .. she went haaaaaandle !!

😂 @1:30 what’s up with ole yellow board MCGee there with his flippers flapping in the breeze?? 😆 did that barn door really paddle out at Waimea with fins strapped to his back? What, did he forget his oxygen tank? 😂😭 There’s only a select few North Shore heavies who could pull that look off without looking like a total kookfest and that doesn’t appear to be Marc Healey or Mark Cunningham to me. But hey, whatever works I guess. Whoever it is, they successfully paddled out at 15ft+ Waimea and got some waves and (presumably) made it back to shore breathing, which is more than I can say.
