Draining the Lake with Siphons – A Day at Fensmere Fish Farm also a possible Otter sighting at
Winter arrived at Fensmere with 3 inches of snow on the ground, and the day started with a possible otter sighting! I went to investigate and found tracks in the snow-but no sign of the culprit.
After that, it was straight to work setting up three 4” siphons to start draining the top lake in preparation for netting and grading next week. This lake doesn’t have a monk system or upstand, so to protect the smaller C2 Leneys from potential damage in the main outlet pipe, siphons were the best option.
Siphons can be tricky to set up, and despite a lot of effort, all three failed this time. Some days you’re the hammer, and some days you’re the nail 🤦♂️.

The speed in which Fensmere Fish Farm refills is partly due to the incredible direct water flow that I am allowed to direct into the lake. In this video I look at those systems and take you on a little walk around to discuss...

Definitely not an otter 🦦. More likely a grizzly 🐻 coming out of winter hibernation ❄️ The best way to trap 🪤 them is to drink as many Grimbergen 🍺 as possible until you start to see two together.
😂😂😂 I thought Grizzly Old Bar Steward, so downed a few Grims and all became clear. Love ya work old mate.
would of been a tail print with an otter
@@robertcushney3174 yes I did think this, so what was this coming out of the lake as would have thought a Coypu would also have a tail print?
ive watched coypu in the past on french trips and like yourself went to see where they left the water as they were constantly picking my baits up definitely coypu prints looks a glorious lake , your a lucky man@@FensmereFishFarmandCarpLake

Hi Mark, Talking about pellets. Overhere on my lake good results with the Tellus from Axereale elevage. Including delivery 600 euro's for 1000kg... It's a soja based food and I feed my carp whole year round. In less than 10 years the fish grow from 1 kg to over 20 kg. No dead fish in spring. 😅 Best regards Robert
Thanks for message Robert, I will look into them to add to the mix through the summer as they are cheaper than the Gouessant vegetable based pellet option. I will look at its nutrition profile as well. What sort of breakdown time do you get from the pellet?
Unfortunately very fast. I think a couple of minutes...Not like Coppens I am afraid. But as I don't have bream and not many silvers on my lake I don't really care 😅
I never really tested them Mark, so I just put a few in al glass of water. They perform better than I intitially thought. After 20 minutes they are still intact!
Almost an hour and still not completely broken down Mark! So in cold water at least an hour I guess. Positively surprised 😊
The total breakdown took 2,5 hours...😮
Just watched your last 4 videos on what’s been happening out there mark & im amazed you managed to make videos whilst dealing with the stress of it all. Glad it looks like it’s over for now & hopefully you get plenty of time now to assess the situation & put more things in place to help. You did some quick thinking & made choices that saved you from total disaster so you should be proud…… no small feat to deal with all that on your own. 💪💪
What density do you stock your fish farm at ?
Hi Lee, we are around 300kg/acre on the main lake at the farm and its a 8 acre lake. We see around 3-5kg/year weight gain on the fish with the shooters sometimes gaining a little more. The biggest C3 last year was 9kgs and they averaged 7kgs.
@ thanks for the reply, you’re much bigger than me, I have eight stock ponds that I’ve dug out and a 3.5 acre lake with fish to just over 25lb, I’m in the North East of England so it’s a lot colder up here! I’m going to give BP Milling a go this year, the look to be quite decent and I’m not too fussed about quick growth. Cheers Lee
Good luck fella, hope the weather improves, take care.
Really feel for you fella. I truly hope the weather and more importantly the stream levels drop and keep them separate to your lakes. Stay safe yourself in those conditions especially if your down there on your own.
Good luck mate, really hope you sort it and things get better....

Welcome to fishery management mate so easy isn’t it😂😂😂 Carp anglers just don’t know what goes on behind the scenes!

are the otter fences banned or is it certain areas they are not allowed?
@@jk_indawild yes I have been told by the DDT that I cannot obstruct the free movement of the otter with fencing. It’s bloody ridiculous to be honest and I will look into options this coming summer.
Nice to see you living a totally stress-free life mate. 😉

Great to listen to this one Mark, we lost one of our stockies two weeks ago to an otter. Brilliant day session catch mate, well done 💪

@FensmereFishFarmandCarpLake thank you so much for the reply....do unasked you to put me on the waiting list or do I have to go through exclusivecarpvenues?
@ I can chat with Wayne and add you to the waiting list mate, I will let you know if anything becomes available.
Another great vid,.I hope others appreciate the effort that goes into maintaining a fishery.. I have two stocked ponds neither of which are commercial run but are for my own pleasure with a couple of friends. It's amazing how little time I can make to actually fish myself as so much time is spent maintaining the grounds and defences against all the predation problems we have.
Many thanks Peter, yeh its a lot of work that for sure, but very rewarding. For me it is all about the investment in the right machines, without the big tractor, excavators, dumper and buggy it would all have taken years and years. I certainly haven't been fishing as much as I like to, but I do have a big year planned. I have 4 weeks at Rainbow and another 3 weeks at a super venue, so things are looking up hahahahahaha.
Hello Mark, I am using a scarecrow to keep the Cormorants of my lake. The ones that move a little bit in the wind are the best! Another solution is a good old gasexploder. Will cost you around 200 euro's...Best regards Robert
I made a standup scarecrow and I have one in a boat that floats about, but one that moves in the wind would be awesome. Could you send me a link for the ones you have please Robert.
Another nice video, but no Oscar yet. Maybe consider dangling a few cds from the strings across the stock ponds to further deter cormorants. Look forward to the next installment. All the best.
@@dmez9403 they are on there Dave, I had heaps of them, but they keep being blown around and spinning up right to the main tape. I will get more on there again though as they definitely work 👍
All cracking looking fish mate 👌👌👌😍
@@jackheckingbottom3296 thanks Jack, we grade our fish to get a real mix of scaleys, plainer mirrors and commons. Each year from a few thousand C1’s we only bring on around 200 fish. This means the very best make it through in terms of beauty and size 👌
Interesting video! I have a lake not so far from you Mark. The cormorants are not an issue overhere, but 2 years ago an otter arrived on the property and I lost quite a few big carp. I noticed that the otter population is increasing the last couple of years in France. I hope your lake is fenced off... I solved my otterproblem with electric fencing. Best regards, Robert
@@whiteblackbird8494 Hi Robert, yes I lost a good fish last winter at the fish farm (upper 20) to otter predation. I keep an eye out everyday for them coming onto the lake again, but I have not seen anymore signs. I believe the male Otter has a huge range and although I stayed on site after loosing the fish last year to see the culprit it never showed its face again. Good luck on your lake I would be interested to see how you have otter proofed it. The DDT told me I was not able to fence the property as I was not allowed to disrupt the passage of the otter 🤷🤯🤬
@@FensmereFishFarmandCarpLake Hi Mark, The male otters have indeed a large area in which they live. One day they are at your lake and the next they move somewhere else, 10 km further. But they always seem to come back once they find easy access to lots of fish... You see these animals rarely as they are nocturnal and you don't find all the victims. Lots of fish are eaten in the water and the remains sink to the bottom of the lake. Only when they catch a bigger fish they tend to eat them somewehere on the bank, leaving behind the remains. Sometimes they only eat the parts they like most...Yes the DDT don't want to see closed off properties anymore. The wild animals have to migrate in and out as much as they like. Crazy! If I can have your email address I'll send you some pictures of my electric fencing. Best regards Robert
It's great to see you spending time to work every thing out it a massive learning curve. The joy of fishing is the journey. Not just rock up and cock up.
Really enjoying the watch. Very interesting and informative on the as you say behind the scenes. Respect for your hard work

Can i ask what are your local laws regarding shooting of cormorants?
@@peterlakey9417 Hi Peter, in France only the Chasse are allowed to hunt. You can get permission to have the Chasse come and help with predator issues, but this opens up a whole can of worms. On both the farm and our Fensmere property which is 60+ acres we have a Chasse Interdit which we have had to apply for. This basically stops the Chasse hunting on our land. We have many reasons for this, mainly my wife’s horses and the risk hunters on our land would create. Also once the Chasse are allowed to hunt on your land it’s very difficult to stop. They can then at anytime during hunting season descend upon your property and we simply didn’t want this. I would join the Chasse, but my French is not good enough to get through the one year training and written exams, so for now I just have to be up at the farm and create as many problems for the birds as possible by way of ropes and obstacles.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. The green lobby here in the UK would love to ban fishing altogether eventually let alone shooting a problem cormorant. For that reason I have to limit my use of my gun to quiet periods around my ponds.
What tunes did you have on out of interest?
I had some drum and bass as usual in my ear pieces and I was worried that it would come out on the video and I would get done for copyright hahahahaha

When was this ?
Hi Toby, this was last year 2024. Wayne and I had 21 booked for 2 weeks, but it only opened a week later 🤦♂️ I wanted to do something a little different and have an adventure, so headed to Salagou. In the end it was the wrong time of year and apart from the fish the Germans caught I didn’t see another fish caught the 10 days I was there. It was a great trip though and I got a heap of knowledge banked for future trips 👍
Little bit 🐂 💩 about the weather.
@@Timbo_Slice23 yeh WHATEVER thanks for watching treacle 😘
@@FensmereFishFarmandCarpLake what type of fish are you breeding.?
Did you say this “turd to do”? 😂
Hi Mark when you dig that top end of the C1 pond would it not be worth creating a silt trap whilst you’ve got the machine there. That way you’ve only got to empty that periodically and it will protect anything nasty coming into the lake. Just a thought mate. Chris
@@ChrisLogsdon-r9m yep great idea mate, I will need to look at how it will fit in there as it’s a tight land barrier, but it can certainly be done 👍
