Is good to see Merseyrail services expanded beyond Kirkby but it would've been better if they kept it as a through station as then Merseyrail services could've continued onwards to Wigan. Reason for this is because whenever Northern plus everyone else is striking it means that the people in Wigan can't travel by rail towards Liverpool if they needed to get there, it would've offered a 3rd direct route to Liverpool instead of needing to go via St Helens Central OR Newton le Willows. Hopefully now that they've finished off Headbolt Lane they should focus on relaying the Burscough Curves and dealing with Ormskirk so that Merseyrail services can expand onwards to Preston. Southport would benefit from a direct service to Preston instead of having to change in Wigan or needing to walk from Burscough Bridge to Burscough Junction.

will headbolt lane not be electrified? they currently only have 1 battery train so how will they run the new trains there
There are currently 4 battery trains in the UK and another 3 at stadlers factory

The track is set up to line and level before any third rail is fixed in place, so it may yet be electrified.
@Jean Pierre the track isn't being electrified to headbolt line, network rail will not allow any 3rd rail extensions. Hence the need for battery trains
They'll run battery trains for a few months, realised its an awful idea, close the line for another few months and electricity it

No - it is separated and is a franchise of its own. The legal position is complicated. It owns, not leases, its rolling stock and it currently has a track maintenance agreement with NetWork Rail but wants to terminate that arrangement to create more flexibility and control through vertical integration. There are other franchises eg Northern Rail and Transport for Wales that also run into the region which are standard franchises, leasors and NetWork Rail customers..
