The production was among the best up until this point. Audiences need to start booing this kind of crap, that'll put an end to it in no time. I've come to terms with having to accept kitsch modern productions, but including modern instruments is just a step too far.

Christie and his musicians are, as ever, first rate. So are most of the soloists. However, the recording engineers rob us of these delights because of gross clumsiness and whether they or the so-called 'producer' chopped the 2 opening sinfonias is unclear. Christie is conducting the coda of #2 when the video begins and obviously did not have any say in the overall apology of a 'production' -- actually a demolition of one of Purcell's most important works of his later period. Christie is one of the most experienced experts in the curious 'masque/semi-opera' form unique to England during the reign of Charles ll and William and Mary. The form has its rules and protocols, which allow for messages and sub-action to be hinted at against the main plot but, sadly, here are bulldozed by crude stage producers whose ignorance is staggering. Yes, perhaps a good evening was had by some of the audience and non-musical performing arts courses spare parts persons littering the stage and looking ridiculous but that is no excuse for the demolition of a great work of art. Period costume might have mitigated the disaster up to a point but because the music is fatally obscured by stage-minded egos all is lost. E.g. it is NOT for 'stage monkeys' to gesture to ensemble musicians to stand for applause. That duty and privilege is for the conductor and the ensemble members observe the convention of good manners. Fortunately William Christie and Les Arts recorded the work in 1998 and that is something of a reference beacon. There are other staged FQ's on RUclips and DVD worth seeking out but this insult to Henry Purcell and some great musicians is best flushed from memory.

Pichon et ses musiciens ajoutent une dimension spirituelle à la célèbre Passion selon Saint Matthieu de J.S.Bach, donnant à cette composition mondialement connue un aspect « nouveau ». Ceci est encore renforcé par les motets latins suggestifs de Kuhnau et Gallus, qui peignent immédiatement les deux parties du MP dans des couleurs sombres et profondes. Grand respect cher gens!

Excellente idée que de présenter Mondonville, un compositeur que je considère parmi les tous meilleurs du 18e siècle en France, et injustement méconnu (mais il semble que c'est en train de changer, et c'est tant mieux). Rameau, ce génie, on ne le présente plus. C'est sans hésitation possible l'égal d'autres géants comme Haendel ou Bach, mais avec un grain de folie, de fantaisie en plus, très français. Rameau, c'est Bach sous amphétamines ou Haendel avec les doigts dans la prise !

Tout est laid. Sauf la musique.

LA meilleure version de la Passion. Julian Prégardien est le seul à chanter sans partition, bravo et merci !

Big Purcell fan here and a great treat to hear this with William Christie and his group. But the atrocious,unrelated and deeply racist choreography made watching it a torture! I could accept the lack of costumes because I have seen it with worse, but that choreography was so beyond bad. 😢

Précision plus qu'utile : le concert a lieu dans la co-cathédrale Saint-Jean à La Valette (Malte). Et on peut voir la débauche décorative qui caractérise ce monument, ainsi que les tableaux du Caravage qui en sont un des ornements essentiels.
