Bringing the Flerd Together
We are out moving the sheep and goats and cows and they are mostly respecting the portable poly wire fencing we use. The new Billy goat is doing well and getting along with the rams in our ram mobile portable pen. The Dogs and Cows can see each other now and will get a little closer each day until we combine the herd and flock into a flerd once more.

Back from the Grazing School

We're home from the SFA Grazing School up at George Heller's Farm in Wadena, MN. A lot of the people we've met there post to youtube which is a big part of why we decided to start posting videos. It's too hard to take time away from the farm to visit people, so video is a fantastic medium to stay in touch and see what everyone is doing. Here are some of the channels and websites of the great pe...

Grazing the Back Corner

In this video we show our Goats and Sheep grazing the back corner of the property for the first time. Feels good to be getting some animal impact on this area where setting up our portable electric fencing and haling water is a bit more difficult. We also get some good views of the pond and take a look at an existing fence line that we've cleared of vegetation and are in the process of repairing.

Raking Hay and Handling Sheep

We finish raking the hay and our neighbor baled it into 4x5 Round bales for us. Then it's on to doing health checks on the sheep and tagging a few lambs that got missed earlier in the season. Isn't there a 3rd hyd. filter on the machine? I just bought a 2020 and Wix has 3 filters listed. I also have a 2011 that has a seperate filter for the hydraulic pump for the bed up under the front seat near the tank. I can't find the 3rd filter on the 2020, but Wix has 3 listed.

      Maybe the 3rd filter you are seeing listed is the engine oil filter? I don't have a 3rd hydraulic filter on our machine, just the 2 for hydraulic/transmission oil: yellow for VHT and black suction filter.

    Can you blow air into the end of the muffler to clean the spark arrester?

    • @wholeviewfarm
      @wholeviewfarm 2 месяца назад

      I don't think that would be a good idea as it would blow the material back into the coiled tube in the muffler that allows sparks to go out before they hit the grass. The idea is to dis lodge them with the mallet and allow the positive pressure from the exhaust to push them out.

    Hi Nicky and Joe, my daughter in law, Hootie recommended that I watch your you tube channel. I watch several sheepy podcasts. I’m a knitter and spinner. We used to have a 4H lease program with sheep, goats and cows. At home we raised Holland Lop rabbits. Cindy is my daughter. I’m curious, what kind of sheep do you have? Hootie said they were haired sheep. They look like Shetland sheep to me. She also said you have fainting goats. They were fun to watch at a goat show. They would faint when they got startled. I have subscribed to your channel. Nice job!

    • @wholeviewfarm
      @wholeviewfarm 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for subscribing! We really enjoyed meeting Cindy last week. Our sheep are indeed hair sheep so we don't have to shear them as the shed in the warm weather. They are a cross of Katahdin, Barbados, and Dall sheep. We have 7 fainting goats and the rest are Spanish, Boer or a cross of the two.

      When nighttime temps are expected to be in the low 60s or below, we'll turn on the heat lamp when it's just chicks in the brooder. If we have a broody mom in there with them it's not a concern as she'll keep them warm enough.

    I'd be making the paddocks much smaller, so the animals do a better job of cleaning each area up. Also I'd move them every day to reduce the parasite load probability, knowing that cow and sheep are a zero sum equation. I love the amount of feed that is left on your pastures as well.
