Wonderful movie and one of John Wayne's and John Ford's best. This video explains a lot of the subtle parts of the movie. One question I have always had was why were Ethan's brother living there and how did they make a living? However, that makes little difference because the movie has so much to convey.

Such a good video! So, if the color of the hotel exterior is based on b&w photos containing (probably) false or exaggerated colors, perhaps that’s why the hotel exterior’s color is so eye catching (to me).

Somehow The Searchers did not get a single Oscar nomination in any category. There are so many superlative elements in this film, cited in this video, that it makes one wonder what the Academy members were thinking at the time. Hollywood made it up to John Wayne years later and gave him the Oscar for Best Actor in True Grit. True Grit is a fine movie and Wayne was very good in it, but his performance in The Searchers is one for the ages. Wayne was also excellent in his final film, The Shootist, 1976. John Ford won the Oscar for Best Director four times and none of the films were westerns: The Informer(1935), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941), and The Quiet Man (1952). The cinematographer, Winton Hock, won the Oscar for his camera work in a John Ford film with Wayne, The Quiet Man, in 1952 but was overlooked for great work in The Searchers. At the time, Hollywood seems to have regarded westerns as not serious art the same way they ignored Hitchcock and never gave him an Oscar for Best Director. Hitch made suspense movies and they were not serious either, according to the thinking. Thinking, as we know, is hard.

Shocking, right? It’s like horror today (and even some of the more incredible arthouse and subtly haunting horror of the past). Some genres are just frequently overlooked and it’s such a shame!

This is a brilliant assessment of the film, whoever you are. So perceptive. Good to see the Duke as a Confederate for once. "A misplaced man in a world that's moving on without him".........tell me about it. "We are all searchers"........absolutely.

Great video! I really enjoy this movie, not only impressed by the landscape of monument valley but also touched by the nuanced characters. I'm an Asian, in which the topic of racism is not so sensitive as in America. But the theme of the war between the white and the Indians really let me think hard. I've watched the film over and over for a month since i first saw it and for each time i could find new details and i always want to tear when seeing Ethan lift Debbie in the end. Really masterpiece and one of my favorite movies

The simple fact that you even know whom Sir Ken Adam IS--is wonderfully mind-blowing!! OH how I wish you'd have some many more and broader essays about the production end of film...as it is sorely lacking! I hope very much you reach as many of the goals in life that you possibly can! MARVELOUS!! Be good to yourselves, each other and those and the things that cherish you, whatever they/it might be...and embrace life as best you can--and it will all return to you in one way or another, eventually...as good karma usually does!!

Two the both of you...CONGRATS for finding one another--all but by accident!! Which, is, how I "stumbled" across this channel! And it is EXCEPTIONAL!! I have worked in "entertainment" for around 45 year (yep...I'm not a "youngster"...well, at least at heart anyway!) and like to find any and every type of "channel" that is devoted to film (first one I ever worked on was a little thing that at the time had no idea would eventually become world famous--something called: "Blade Runner"! Though I had already worked on commercials and TV--yes, THAT "thing"! lol) I find informative, thoughtful, well presented and illuminating. Yours hits on all the "buttons"...and then some. I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with what you've done here !! And it is all but a shame you haven't done SOOO much better here for views and subscribers...when so much other "schlock" can garner ridiculous amounts of both...when yours is so superbly presenting and done!! BRAVO/BRAVA!! What makes it all the more unfortunate, is that you seem to have put your projects/videos somewhat aside and post so little nowadays! Saddening when something so upper tier in quality, knowledge, and information goes unrewarded--and sadly, that is far to often the case in life in general--and especially on You Tube which is flooded with so much lesser quality clap-trap! But as the saying goes: "Ya get what ya pay for" which is what far too many who seem to have to have lost the ability to actually THINK and eat a "full meal" as opposed to "fast food"...and not for thought!! Whereas, in instances such as your own, it is put out there for the love of it and fulfilling nourisnment! And few things--in whatever part of life that might be--are as noble and worthwhile! So just wanted to let you know, that from someone inside the "entertainment industry" (also worked in music as well) you are HIGHLY appreciated and regarded! Wish I could assist you in your desires of where/how to achieve your objectives/goals!! Nevertheless--MUCH good luck and karma! May your lives combined together, no matter what else...continue to bring you love, joy, happiness and mutual enlightenment along your paths! Keep Believing!

Unfortunately it’s just inherent with a movie of its time and subject that it would have these aspects. It’s not that we feel the movie is “racist,” but it’s certainly apparent and on full display that the attitudes and ideals of the time were. I’d rather be respectful to indigenous people by calling a spade a spade than pretend it wasn’t reality.

I just love this movie so much! No other movie I’ve ever scene has created such a “cozy” environment while being about a murder! I love watching rear window late at night when I’m already a bit sleepy. I don’t know why, but it feels like my mind is under a warm blanket, the epitome of comfortable. Just looking in that backyard full of lovely little details gives me that feeling. It’s like a perfect cozy world, something that only films from that era are capable of displaying. I don’t know why and what it is, but I love it. I will always remember watching that movie the first time and how it made me feel so embraced by comfort. It was around 2 pm at night, my wife was sleeping besides me in our super comfortable bed and I felt like a good old movie I haven’t seen yet. That’s how I discovered Rear Window and I love recreating the cozy feeling of watching it the first time!
