CLEF Notes #67 (The Christian Faith #10): The Eighth Commandment
Perhaps more than ever, we are able to say what we want to say about other people, and have what we say seen and heard around the world via the internet. So does it actually matter what we say?

Avoiding stealing from someone else seems quite straight-forward. But not stealing from someone also means helping them to improve and protect what they already have. How do we do that?

CLEF Notes #63: (The Christian Faith #6) Fourth Commandment

There does not seem to be much to honoring our parents. Not murdering, committing adultery or stealing would seem to be more significant. But actually, when it comes to those around us, other people, the honoring of our parents is the most important thing we can do.

In a simlar way, "You shall not murder" is violated when two gunfighters duel and is not ameliorated simply because both agree to the rules of the gunfight.

Thank you, an excellent and succinct presentation. Jesus Himself so often dealt with the abuse of the Sabbath. When His followers were condemned for eating (meagerly) on the Sabbath He said "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." His actions shamed those who wanted to prohibit even charitable deeds on this day. The number of times Jesus "breaks" the Sabbath is also remarkable & calls into question all strictly legalistic understandings -even then. "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."

If I may, one suggestion: maybe turn down the volume of the (otherwise pleasant) horn at the end of the video a bit. It was somewhat startling- and would be particularly so for those trying to listen to something as a bedtime devotional. I liked the message tho.

In God's eyes sin is sin; confess ALL sin. Temptation in and of its self is NOT sin. Whether or not you choose to act upon the temptation, will determine.

This is really funny to those of us that are atheists! How would anyone know? Billy Graham was once asked if there would be sex in Heaven. He replied that he was unsure about sex, but he hoped that there was golf there. That's a revealing remark, because the concept of Heaven obviously varies based upon what an individual may value! It's noteworthy that this supposedly ethereal destination is always described in materialistic, earthly terms (e.g., Pearly Gates). If Heaven is so perfect, why didn't God put us there to begin with? Is earth some sort of testing ground for hominid species?

Heaven isn't our ultimate Home. Jesus said to the thief 'This day I'm telling you, you'll be with me in paradiso.' I left the Greek there, because it's important to know that in the Septuagint, it's the word consistently used to translate the Hebrew 'eden.' In other words, as CSN sang at Woodstock (just this bit, I'm not endorsing anything else they sang) "We’re going back to the garden." We are not heavenlings, but earthlings. We aren't made out of heaven, but the dirt of the world created for us. And Jesus is One of us, with us, in the new Earth, without sin and death, forevermore. So yeah, clothing, beef jerky, and the smell you get on a warm misty morning is ours forevermore.

Most, I believe, would render it: "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." Not that I want to open an old and well-argued point, but the Greek word order here almost demands the traditional rendering. "Amen to you I say, today etc." (Luke 23:43) Otherwise the "today" becomes a complete redundancy. This rendering would suggest a substantially broader or at least different rendering for paradiso (than garden) and a more nuanced eschatology. Is the word "heaven" really so different? No one could insist on the meaning from Genesis 1:1 (from the LXX) had Jesus said "en ourano" upon the cross.

An individual once noted that those pastors most willing to abandon (outwardly) the marks of the authority of the office (in an endeavor to become "relatable"), were, counterintuitively, the most likely also to be ostensibly egocentric.

Have you not read: the body of Christ is the temple (1Co 3:16) Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (NKJV) The Tabernacle (tent of meeting) was erected in the wilderness (Exodus 25) according to God's command. God's presence resided on the Tabernacle. Then Israel moved to the Promised land, the Tabernacle rested in Shilo; which you failed to mention! Solomon built the first Tabernacle of stone on Mount Zion in the 10th century! And that Temple was destroyed in 586 BCE, another fact you left out! The Second Temple, which was built during Ezra's time, and finished by Herod was destroyed in 70 A.D. by Titus Vespasian! Jesus said another Temple will be built (Mt 24:15) a prophesy from Daniel 9:24-27 concerning the Last Days, prior to Jesus' return again! The Vail was rent in two to make a way for all to come to God - because the PERFECT SACRIFICE which was Jesus - who shed His blood for our sins and made atonement for all who believe (Rom 10:9,10). It sounds like you are alluding to "replacement theology!" No, according to Scripture God hasn't abandoned Israel, as Paul clearly teaches in Romans 9-11! God swore an oath (Gen 13:15). If you've been keeping up with the latest news in Israel, they hope to build a temple very soon on the Temple Mount!

Great presentation. Thank you. One of the things Luther pounds away at is the removal of the essential rationale of the words "to bow down to it." He points to Jesus' question about the image of Caesar on a coin & asks why Jesus would not condemn the image's existence or even its creation in the first place.

Thank you for the video. Very clear and helpful. When Paul urges Christians to "seek the things that are above" and to "put aside" various (specifically identified) sins, "if risen again with Christ," (Col 3 et al) we have another clear indication that Paul sees as an aspect of new obedience this daily battle described from his own experience in Romans 7.
