What sloppy writing. They could've said he used some sort of ritual to save his ass. It was already established that he saw a bunch of mystics. Hell the Punisher could've had it redirected to Ghost Rider or gangsters he was planning to kill or even the people Punisher already sent to Hell.

The reason why the Punisher isn't affected by the stare is because he's never hurt or killed the innocent. The story still tosses ass, though!

Would have made more sense if the Punisher actually felt the penance stare, but kept fighting through it. Then after Ghost Rider sees it, and asks how he is still fighting through it, all Punisher says is knowing those he killed suffered that much elates him more than it hurts him. Because he beleives they deserved it, and so much more.

Well like once per arc Ghost Rider arc someone tanks the penance stare.

Based on the description of the power, the only way that that would work, is if the character has already survived worse than all the pain they have ever inflicted.

No, it doesn't mean that if you have no regrets, the stare won't work. The punishers killed people who did horrific crimes. Such as the torture and murder of Frank's family. The ghost rider is essentially the hell hound that seeks sinners and escaped demons. Basically in a cosmic sense they are the same. It's like the same polirized magnet it will repell or cancel each other out. Its a way to show that cosmic powers or beyond powers have certain rules and limits. Making a over powers charater also nerfed at the same time. You would be hard pressed to not find other examples of such a situation similar as the punisher v ghost rider.

I do like the reality that the Punisher is just that pure of an archetype and will have absolute resistance to guilt, empathy, or doubt based attacks.

The stare only works on the guilty, it has nothing to do with how you feel. The punisher has only killed guilty people so in a way he is innocent, this also ties back to ghost rider being the Angel of Justice (I believe, I'm doing this from memory) Frank has also survived the penance stare in other comics, and a handful of others have as well.

This is how it has worked for a long time. Ghost rider has a backup for those who don't care about the Penance Stare. It is an even more powerful version that doesn't care about if you feel guilty or not. Thanos was immune to the Penance Stare but not its more powerful form.

That's not how the stare works. If that was how it worked then it wouldn't work on most beings. Most murderers don't regret what they did.

Most forms of media I see this story with, it always goes that something happens that puts them in a life or death situation that forces them to change their mind and retract the decision to file the restraining order, but this? This was a chef's kiss. no "happy ending", no "Love and friendship will always win", just a woman and her decision, that lead... no place. she got those few 15 minutes of fame with JJ, but that story probably fell dead in the water by dinner time.

The Punished kills people who have already caused pain and suffering... To him, he's balancing the scales, by making those people who cause pain and suffering feel the same thing.

It makes perfect sense. The stare forces the recipient to experience all the pain and suffering they’ve inflicted on others. So? Punisher has already suffered immense trauma and pain, both physical and psychological. It’s like splashing warm water on someone standing in the pouring rain. Punisher won that one fair and square, folks.

Well, Venons can also survive the Penance Stare (and that's more than one time).

Even if we changed it and argued it was only sins committed against the innocent, Frank Castle doesn't punish the innocent and would still be immune.

GR's stare punishes 'evil'...Frank aint 'evil' in that kind of way...he is the literal Spirit of Vengeance. Frank has done awful things...but only to awful people.

Direct use of the Power Ring on yellow? Yes, that's useless. Indirect? Prepare to see what happens when you die.
