Oh no, can't have children learning to touch their own bodies! I've seen the books actually pulled. It wasn't about sex. Books about El Salvador. Books about slavery. Books about presidential scandals. Books about the the treatment of black people post-slavery. It's really not the sexual content these people are worried about. And it doesn't surprise me one bit she wants Handmaid's Tale gone. She's not worried about the graphic image. This book has been in public schools in TN since I was in school in the 80s. It was never a problem until now. Many of the Judy Blume adolescent books I read in the 80s had some racy themes. And who didn't read Go Ask Alice? These books, like video games, are not what's corrupting children. Look at some of our leaders who have been charged with sex crimes but they get excused. Look at all the church leaders who got caught hurting children but it goes ignored. This stuff gets ignored and books are blamed, they're the scapegoat. Because now we are seeing video evidence of the books they're actually removing and most of them are not about sex, they're about minorities and are often written by minorities. And the irony of her rant about The Bluest Eye tells me she missed the point of the book. Or she is so brainwashed she doesn't recognize the historic oppression of women.
